Haunted Attraction:
USS Nightmare, Newport, Kentucky

Website: www.ussnightmare.com
Reviewed by: Team Mysterious Misery (Veteran Team- 1 year)

The Scare Factor: 9.93 Screams

Overview: USS Nightmare is a haunted ship owned by the Berstein Brothers and operated by Allen Rizzo. It is conveniently located behind Newport on the Levee on The River between the Taylor-Southgate Bridge and the Purple People Bridge at 101 Riverboat row, Newport, KY 41071.

Now in its 16th season, rated as one of the 13 Best Haunts In America by Haunt World Magazine and featured in USA Today, it doesn't disappoint. This is one of the best haunted attractions we have reviewed in a long time. The impressive real life story to the boat with the special effects make this haunt truly a must see for all haunted house goers.

Cast: 9.8 Screams

This is a wonderful horde of actors, and we do mean horde! There are between 40-50 actors in this attraction each and every night they are open. Each actor evolves from a person into a character. They take the characters to a whole new level that will frighten you. For a core group of random volunteers, they are passionate, energetic and just great at what they do. Our bet is they will scare you and we are sure you will have a favorite, as well.

Costuming: 10 Screams

The make -up and costuming at the USS Nightmare is one of the best we have seen all haunting season. This is thanks to Steve and his crew of 8 make up artists. The artists take approximately 2 hours to do everyone's make up. You will find only one mask in the whole haunt and it is because it is a crowd favorite who have asked for it's return. The rest of the horde creatures you meet on your journey are all in make up. Some have well placed blood and use of prosthetics to enhance overall effects. We are sure you will be impressed with each character you meet, just as we were.

Customer Service: 10 Screams

USS Nightmare has wonderful customer service. The Rizzo's and their staff are always around and eager to answer any questions. If you should have a concern or question you will be able to find a staff member right away to take care of the problem. They also have well lit safety signs, emergency plans and personnel to carry out the plans at all times. You will always feel safe on this boat. They have also added some great features for guests to take home a little something to remember the boat. Say cheese, because they have cameras everywhere snapping photos you can buy at the end of your tour. You can also rent the mess hall on the second floor of the boat for your own private party. USS Nightmare is one of the best haunts for customer service.

Atmosphere: 10 Screams

As you walk up on top of the hill you can look down on the river and see the 286 foot rusty, old and rickety boat called the USS Nightmare. With the October wind and the boat moving back and forth from the waves you know you are going to be in for a long creepy night. The USS Nightmare is based on a true story that is haunting in itself. The boat was called the William S. Mitchell. One day the storm got very bad and the boat got loose and went down the Missouri River running into many bridges along the way and killing many people. That is why it has the past of the Massacre on the Mitchell. While on the boat, before you enter your tour, you will get to see all the footage and newspapers articles. The inside is just as creepy as the outside and if you get a chance to look while you are screaming you can see the damage of the wreck.

Special Effects: 10 Screams

USS Nightmare has many special effects that will leave you puzzled on how they did that to giving you the ultimate scare. USS Nightmare is one of the haunts that has used their special effects to their advantage without going overboard. They have some very original and unique ones you will not see in other haunts. Children who get scared and end up being watched also have a special effect in their room to scare patrons and let them have fun. From the disappearing Mike Myers, the vortex room, the ledge that falls and many more, we are sure there will be something that gives you a startle or a scare.

Theme: 9.7 Screams

This is an attraction that knows how to use theme to its advantage and we applaud that! From beginning to end, there is little doubt about the theme here. It is a huge haunted boat. As you travel through your journey on the boat you will learn the story of the Captain and his boat. Along the way you will meet his crew members and see all parts of the boat. If you ever wanted to see a haunted attraction use its theme to the best of its ability the USS Nightmare is the place to be.

Fright Effect: 10 Screams

USS Nightmare takes all the elements and puts them together to offer you one of the best fright nights we have seen in a long time. If being on the water in a rickety old rusted boat isn't enough to scare you, just wait until you get inside. Special effects and characters and creatures with thousand of places to hide and rehide will get you at least once through your tour. No matter what you may be scared of it will find you on the boat. There is a startle, a jump, and scare for each person in your group.

Value: 10 Screams

The cost is $15 for the regular show for the USS Nightmare. Online at the USS Nightmare website there is a coupon for $4 off for Thursday or Sunday (which makes it an even better deal). For $20 you can get the USS Nightmare & The Pickled Brother Freak Show which is very good and worth the extra $5). They also have RIP passes for $20 if you want to pass the line and get faster entrance into the haunt. You have to book RIP online or call ahead because there are a selected number of tickets. Also you can call in advance to get a special rate if you have more than 20 people.

Haunted Attraction:
USS Nightmare, Newport, Kentucky

Website: www.ussnightmare.com
Reviewed by: Team Jersey Devil (Founding Team)

Reviewed on: October 28 , 2006

The Scare Factor: 8.34 Screams

Overview: The USS Nightmare is located at 101 River Boat Row in Newport, Kentucky. It is minutes from Cincinatti, Ohio on the Ohio River.

The U. S. S. Nightmare is a must-see haunted attraction. Housed in an authentic 1933 steamboat, the atmosphere and serpentine layout make it a stand-out that is sure to leave you screaming for more . . . and well, yes, just screaming! If at all possible, make the trip to Riverboat Row in Newport, Kentucky for a healthy scare. Your heart and lungs will get a good workout.

Cast: 8.83 Screams

Ah, the sheer frightening pleasure of a dedicated crew! In all, there are about 100 team members who work the ship, 65 of which are actors. On any given night 40 of those actors will be haunting the hallways of the U. S. S. Nightmare. This was a truly entertaining troupe. Scares were plentiful, but the real joy was in seeing SO MANY of them having developed their characters beyond the initial "Boo!" Clever, creepy dialogue abounds as these creatures work to give you their bloodcrawling best.

Costuming: 8.25 Screams

There is some very good make-up that is sure to have you taking a second look . . . or send you running in terror! Eyeballs out of their sockets, rotting flesh, and bloody appendages abound. This is some real first class make-up giving this ship's characters some gruesome forms. U. S. S. Nightmare sports 12 make-up artists with 8 chairs running the cast through them. Moreover, a few of the veteran artists are quite accomplished having received their training from some notables in the horror make-up industry. These veterans than give the training to apprentices who do their make-up under the watchful eye of their more accomplished colleagues. Consequently, while some costuming and make-up are more developed then others, there is nary a cheap mask to be found.

Customer Service: 9 Screams

Friendliness, safety, and ingenuity are the linchpins of customer service at USS Nightmare. The staff was courteous and helpful in answering all the questions we had, even before knowing we were reviewing their attraction. Numerous precautions have been taken to insure the safety of all patrons. Security is present. Exits are well marked. We do question just how handicap accessible the attraction is and if that is a concern for you, you may want to call first. The lines can be quite long, but they do a great job of handling their queue. At one point, you can watch an actual news story about the ship. At one point, before being brought to its present location it broke free of its moorings and careened down the river. Actual news footage covers this event from the history of the ship. A little further into the queue there is the "Interactive Horror Terminal". This terminal allows you to activate an air cannon inside the haunt, while you get the watching the resulting scare on a monitor via a hidden camera. A great idea that we've never seen before. The only thing is that it does cost you 25 cents to try. We tried it twice. Neither time did we get much of a reaction from the patrons inside, but it's a cool idea. In addition to these two features, a couple of the ships inhabitants prowled the queue providing some additional entertainment. Additionally, the USS Nightmare takes a photo of every group in front of a green screen. At the end of your nightmare, you can by a souvenir photo with a cool scene from the haunt superimposed behind your group.

Atmosphere: 9 Screams

There were times within this ship that they did not need to do a single piece of decorating to make it a truly creepy experience. The engine and boiler rooms were reminiscent of "Nightmare on Elm Street." Catwalks up and down between floors were wonderfully decrepit and creepy. And even some of the staff agrees, the scariest part of the ship may be the catwalks that traverse you up and around the paddle wheel housing as the river rushes below you. Add to this the work done by the staff of this haunt and you have one of the best atmospheres we have experienced.

Special Effects: 8 Screams

Many of the standard special effects and scares are used throughout and are used well. What makes them better than the standard attraction is the layout. They utilize every inch of this ship for this 30 minute plus attraction. What that means is that some of the effects you come at more than once from different angles. The effect is powerful and at times chilling. You may see a prop from an angle or a distance before coming upon it dead on. Rather than spoiling it, it serves at times to make it creepier. Additionally, there are some quite creative elements- such as the "ball room" with its comedic clowns.

Theme: 7 Screams

This is the area where we believe USS Nightmare harbors the greatest untapped potential. They have a basic plotline on the website for a legend to build around, but unless you go to the website you are not likely to know this. The plot centers around the true story of the ship breaking free of its moorings. It's the beginnings of a clever hook, but largely that theme is missing from the actual attraction.

Fright Effect: 8.33 Screams

The screamer in our group was hoarse by the time we finished this ghoulish attraction. The characters are relentless, the atmosphere is spooky, and the effects are top-notch. If you scare, you will be scared. If you don't, like me, you will be highly entertained by the screams of those around you.

Value: 7 Screams

At $15, we find this to be a superb value. This attraction is long! And we loved every minute of it. But there are also a plethora of options. Are you a student, there is a discount. Come on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Sunday? There's a discount. Or go to cincyhaunts.com and print out a coupon. That's just to name a few. Group rates, party rooms . . . they have it all!

The Scare Factor: 8.1 Screams

Overview: Absolutely Deranged is located in Springfield Ohio at 2630 Springfield – Jamestown Rd. (Rt. 72). This is a brand new attraction owned by the people that own Panic Box and Krueger's Korn Maze.

For this to be one of the newest attractions in Springfield they did an awesome job. Everything from the cast to the costumes to the name of the attraction just says scary!!!!

Cast: 7.3 Screams

The cast really got into their characters. We really like the evil Santa room. Just when you think he is not real he comes to life. These people are passionate about scaring. They will follow you through out the attraction if they believe you are terrified.

Costuming: 8 Screams

All of the costumes worked well in their respective scenes. Everyone there does their own makeup and they do a really good job at it. Some of the costumes look like they took quality time to put them together. There were just enough masks and blood.

Customer Service: 8 Screams

Everyone there was really nice and eager to help. They were eager to hear any suggestions we had. What worked well and what their ideas were for next year. As soon as we got off the highway we knew exactly where to go due to the noticeable signs. Great Job!!!

Atmosphere: 8.5 Screams

They got you into the mood to get scared right a way with a screen playing Saw III. You could here the sounds of screams coming from the inside of the haunt. To see the people running from the exit terrified really made you want to see what you were in store for.

Special Effects: 8.5 Screams

The special effects worked really well. I love walking through dark areas and not knowing what I am in store for around every corner. I also like the fence maze. Just when you thought you had it figured out, you find yourself walking into another dead end. I would have to say that evil Santa was my favorite with the present you receive from him!!

Theme: 8.5 Screams

Absolutely Deranged fits this haunt very well!!! Need I say more?

Fright Effect: 8.2 Screams

The fright effect was very good with the music playing and the yells of the cast. Having to find your way through almost every scene was awesome. Strobe lights, pitch dark rooms and loud music always work well.

Value: 8.6 Screams

At $ 10.00 per person this attraction is well worth it. If you visit the website you can take advantage of $ 1.00 off your admission.

Haunted Attraction:
Chambers of Horror, Middletown

Reviewed by: Team Loco
(Veteran Team- 1 year)

The Scare Factor: 8.6 Screams

Overview: The Chambers of Horror is located at 1601 S. University Blvd. in Middletown, Ohio and is owned and operated by Ed Short.

The Chambers of Horror is an attraction with shrinking tunnels and hallways, dark corridors and a lot of surprises around every corner. Also, if you happen to show up with an empty stomach, there will be body parts offered to snack on. There are no dead spots (other than victims), so turn every corner at your own risk. Just when you think you’ve gone the wrong way, or that there’s nothing there…

Cast: 9 Screams

The cast is amazing here. They know how to get scares and know not to let up. Without good actors, there is no attraction. This is one of the many high points here. Everyone does their job and is completely in character.

Costuming: 8.5 Screams

This is an improved area. Only a few masks are being used and a lot more make-up. A lot of originality behind the costumes/make-up make this attraction what it is.

Customer Service: 8.5 Screams

If you are coming in from out of town, this may be hard to find. However, it is on a main road so anyone in town could tell you where it is. We didn’t see any signs guiding anyone to it. The staff are friendly and get the groups through as fast as is humanly possible.

Atmosphere: 8.5 Screams

Driving by this building you would think of what a great location it would be for an attraction. The owner of this attraction thought so, as well. Perfect location. Great atmosphere. The “butler” character as you enter the building sets the mood and does NOT get out of character no matter how hard you try. Try to get him to look you in the eyes.

Special Effects: 8 Screams

This attraction proves you don’t need to spend millions of dollars on special effects when you can get it done with things you can find around the house or at your local Wal-Mart. The saying goes, “you have to spend money to make money.” This is true, but you don’t have to spend a lot of money.

Theme: 8.5 Screams

This is the Chambers of Horror folks. It’s a creepy looking building on the outside, and a creepy building on the inside filled with several rooms (chambers) designed to scare the living hell out of you. It will do just that.

Fright Effect: 9 Screams

A lot of scares to go around. This is also where the cast and special effects come into play. With all the special effects in place and the cast performing to their full ability, it makes out to be a somewhat frightful experience.

Value: 9 Screams

At $9 a head (no pun intended), plus $1 off when you bring a can of food PLUS an all new “R.I.P.” entrance for an extra $3, you can bring a can of food, buy an
”R.I.P.” ticket and get in for $11 instead of the $12 it would cost without the can of food. To make a long story short, you can bring a can of food and get to the front of the line for the same price most attractions charge to wait in line for an hour.

Haunted Attraction:
Deadly House of Horrors, Columbus

(Veteran Team- 1 year)

The Scare Factor: 7.32 Screams

Overview: Deadly House of Horrors is a Haunted Funeral Home in its 1st year of operation. It is operated by Nancy Woods. It is located on the south end of Columbus, just north of Obetz at 1166 Parsons Ave in Columbus, Ohio.

This was Deadly House of Horrors 1st haunting season and we have to say that it was good for being a rookie. The haunt has many effects that we are seeing in veteran haunts. We feel this is a good haunted attraction for the whole family. We know the changes are coming for next year and we can not wait to see them. So if you are in the area stop by it is worth the money. Definitely mark it on your calendar for a must see next year.

Cast: 7 Screams

Even though the haunt is in its 1st year of operation it has a very good cast of unpaid volunteers that come every weekend to give you a little scare. On each night, you will find between 12-15 cast members working the haunt. Even though some do not have acting backgrounds, they do a good job at the haunt. A must see is the woman from London in the front, she is remarkable at what she does. The cast does a great job at being in the right place at the right time to maximize each scene for fright. Some of the cast members are new at this and still finding their way through. As the haunt continues each year the actors will gain confidence as their character and will become better at what they do.

Costuming: 6.5 Screams

Deadly House of Horrors does a good job at taking characters and dressing them to the part maximizing the scare in each scene. The only down side to this haunt is they have a lot of masked monsters and TV favorites. They stick to what they know and do not venture off into making their own up.

Customer Service: 6.8 Screams

Ms. Woods and her cast are very pleasant and work hard to maintain a great night for everyone. However, this haunt does lack a few safety precautions and that troubled us. It is in a very busy street so please keep kids close. Exit signs are covered up in the haunt and that could equal trouble later. We feel since this is their 1st year of operation and they are still experiencing growing pains, many of these concerns will be addressed next year.

Atmosphere: 8 Screams

When you walk up to the attraction you are already creeped out because there is a hearse out front and you are standing in front of a funeral home. This funeral home was once in business for several years. They claim it is also haunted and they found remains of bodies in the basement. Knowing it once was a real haunted house made the hair stand up on our necks. As you walk in the doors the young lady tells you the story of the haunted house. The spooks and the creepy feelings just keep coming after that.

Special Effects: 8 Screams

Deadly House of Horrors is a smaller haunt and they have great special effects. The use of special props and effects, along with the well placed cast, give the ultimate scare. They have some unique special effects you will not even see coming until they startle or scare you.

Theme: NA

Deadly House of Horrors does not have an existing theme at this time but is in the works for the future.

Fright Effect: 8 Screams

As a 1st year haunt we had to say we were impressed with the fright effect in this haunt. They had special effects and a cast well placed that worked together maximizing the scares. We must say that they gave a few of our bravest a few startles or scares. This is definitely a strong point for this haunted attraction.

Value: 7 Screams

Deadly House of Horrors is $13.00 per person, any age, with absolutely no refunds.

In it's twelfth year of operation and second year at the schoolhouse, The Den t Schoolhouse is quickly becoming one of the most talked about haunted attractions in Cincinnati. Our group can truly see why this attraction is one of the best. With a true story and a wonderful group of actors and a touch of all the right elements, it was well worth the trip and money. We would highly recommend it to any person or group. Not only will it give you a scare, but a history lesson as well.

Cast: 8 Screams

This is a wonderful group of 47 actors prepared to scare you at all times. These are some of the best actors we've seen. Perfectly placed, they do a flawless job and will give everyone in your group a little scare.

Costuming: 9 Screams

This attraction has some of the best costuming and make up you will find in Cincinnati. This attraction has three make- up artists that provide the excellent costuming and make- up for the 96 actors each night.

Customer Service: 9.5 Screams

Customer Service is a high priority at The Dent Schoolhouse. This attraction does a great job of keeping customers happy and answering questions accurately and quickly. There are many staff members roaming around willing to help you at all times. There are also workers inside the haunt to help you if you get a little lost. This attraction also has a great safety plan intact for any emergency that may occur.

Atmosphere: 8.5 Screams

One of the best things about The Dent Schoolhouse is that it is The Dent Schoolhouse. The attraction is actually the same place where the true story occurred. So, not only is it renovated and made haunted with actors and effects, but it also has a creepy factor from the murders actually having taken place there. The Dent Schoolhouse capitalizes on the setting by working with it to create the “school” theme. Each section is a part of the school building with effects and monsters.

Special Effects: 7 Screams

The Dent Schoolhouse has some very great special effects that you may not notice. They have some very big special effects that give you the little push you need to be frightened. The haunt truly tries new thing and the effects are worth taking a look at.

Theme: 9.5 Screams

This is an attraction that knows how to use theme to its advantage and we applaud that! From beginning to end, there is little doubt about the theme here. It is a schoolhouse. The best part is that this schoolhouse comes with a true story complete with documentation. You will quickly be familiar with the story as it plays several times while you wait in line. For those that are impatient, you can log onto their web site and read all about it before going. This schoolhouse follows the story and is almost a complete recreation of true life events.

Fright Effect: 8 Screams

This is a unique attraction based on a true story giving you an added boost of fright. Not only will the effects, actors and atmosphere get to you, but the story will give you shivers. Knowing there are strange, real life things going on in the building is an added bonus for a great haunt.

Value: 9 Screams

At $12.00, this is an exceptional value because of the quality of this attraction. You can also get $2.00 off coupon for selected nights from the attraction's MySpace making it an even better deal. You can pay $18.00 if you don't want to wait in line, but waiting in line is half the fun! For $5.00 you can take a "lights on" tour, which may be good for any little ones in your group. They also offer FREE PARKING, which is always great.

The Experience is not like any other haunted attraction. It is not in your face screaming and jumping out at you. The Experience is an attraction that makes your mind work and uses all your senses. It will give you something different to work your mind. This haunt is a truly great "Experience."

Cast: 6 Screams

The Experience has an acting group called Center Stage Players (CSP) that volunteers to work this attraction. Their acting background gives them the extra edge to scare you.

Costuming: 7 Screams

You will not see a variety of costumes or make up in The Experience. They stick to the basics which works well for the haunt. The costumes you do see fit in perfectly and will definitely scare you.

Customer Service: 6 Screams

The Experience is one haunted attraction that you will be amazed at the customer service. They have a flawless reservation system that makes things work quickly. They get you in and you get tour when your reservation slot is called. They work quickly and are always around to help with any questions or comments. They even have a seated area for you to wait at until your turn.

However, there were a few problems. This is the first year for The Experience as an indoor attraction. Consequently, they did not fully anticipate all the necessary preparations to bring the attraction up to fire code. On this night the fire marshal was present. He went through the attraction with each group as part of his inspection. The result is a list of necessary changes and additions, such as illuminated exits, more exits, and better escape routes. The fire marshal said they were all fixable, but would take a week or so.

Atmosphere: 7 Screams

As your group stands at the door waiting to go through and the man explains the legends you get a creepy feeling all over. Then standing in the first room of the haunt and learning more, you suddenly realize something scary is about to happen and you start not wanting to go through anymore.

Special Effects: 9 Screams

The Experience is one of the few haunted attractions that takes full advantage of utilizing special effects. This haunt has many top notch effects that will leave you wondering how they did it. If you do not go for any other reason, go for the special effects!

Theme: 8.5 Screams

The legend of Hanna Bagley is the theme for The Experience. It is based on a true story that happened in the building. You will learn a lot about Hanna and the curse as you go through each room of this attraction.

Fright Effect: 7 Screams

The Experience is not like any other haunted attraction. You will get your fright from thinking about the legend and figuring out what will happen next. This is not a haunt of "in your face" terror, but anticipation and fear. This is a haunt that uses your own mind against you.

Value: 8 Screams

The Experience is $12.00 at the door, but it you buy online it is only $10.00 and you get a reservation time. It is only $8.00 for children and $5.00 online. We suggest taking the time to go online and buy your tickets. This way, you get the better deal on the tickets and you do not have to wait as long. This haunt is well worth every penny you spend.

The atmosphere was very family friendly. They had rides for the younger children, home made food, a pumpkin patch, a non-scary hayride, a non-scary maze, and the haunted maze. This is a family oriented place where there is something for all ages to do.

Special Effects: 7.4 Screams

There were very few special effects. The bouncy floors and the vibrating floors were different and something you wouldn’t expect out in a corn maze. We liked the few areas that we walked through that were pitch dark. We found it was a little too light through the maze and it did not leave much to the imagination.

Theme: NA

Fright Effect: 7.2 Screams

If you are terrified of clowns (like one of the members of our group) you are really going to get you fill of being scared. The black areas we walked through made you wonder what was next. You will receive a few jumps from unexpected people jumping out at you.

Value: 7.3 Screams

The Field of Fright is $ 9.00 per person and which includes the hayride. They also offer a combo ticket to enjoy the haunted maze and the regular maze for $ 13.00. This seems to be right in line for what is offered through out the farm.

Haunted Attraction:
Haunted Hydro, Fremont
, Ohio
Website: www.thehauntedhydro.com
Reviewed by: Team Disembodied Head
(Founding Team)

The Scare Factor: 7.97 Screams

Overview:
The Haunted Hydro is located at 1333 Tiffin St. in Fremont Ohio (Beside the old Thornwood Public Golf Course in between Roger Young Park and the Ballville bridge and dam).

The Haunted Hydro is a classic haunt relying on old school scares provided by a commited team of actors. This haunt seeks to entertain while providing that awesome rush of adrenaline that only a good scare at a haunted attraction can provide. If you are looking for some flesh-crawling fun at a great price, make the trip to Fremont, Ohio and the Haunted Hydro.

Cast: 7.3 Screams

Our expectations are always high when we go to the Haunted Hydro. They have had some of the best actors in the business over the years. This year, was a little hit and miss. Nevertheless, there were some notable actors throughout. Particularly, we loved the host to Rage in a Cage, the androgynous bald actor in Rage, and the "girl" with the very high pitched voice in the Hydro. They each did a great job playing their character and working their opportunities for a scare.

Costuming: 8 Screams

There is a great cadre of characters throughout the Haunted Hydro. Amidst it all there is a lot of good make-up and nary a mask to be scene (always a plus in our books). They make good use of prosthetics as well as basic make-up skills. The costuming is simple, but effective and appropriate to the characters wearing them.

Customer Service: 8.3 Screams

Good signage, an exceptionally friendly staff, and a commitment to the safety of their patrons leads to great customer service. From the moment you drive onto the grounds of the Hydro, what you encounter are a host of people who are there to see that you have a great experience. There is ample and friendly security in the parking lot as well as patrolling the grounds. The people who work their ticket sales and concessions are exceedingly pleasant and helpful. Safety is provided in every way reasonable and possible. Workers are trained in CPR. There is always an EMT on location. Exit signs are well lit.

Atmosphere: 8.2 Screams

An abandoned century old hydroelectric plant provides the creepy backdrop for this attraction. It's dilapidated walls provide the canvass for the brushstrokes of horror provided by "Crazy Bob" Turner and his crew. Whether due to a change in design or a greater awareness by our team of our surroundings, the haunt seemed to accentuate the construction of the hydro itself. Walls and buttresses tower above you giving it an almost gothic feel. This is one haunt whose atmosphere will not disappoint.

Special Effects: 7.5 Screams

The entrance to the Hydro this year was completely changed from recent years. For one, you entered this year where you exited last year. But more importantly for this category, the mode of entry was very original. You literally crawled through a hearse! There is a bypass for those who can't make this trip, but it's well worth it if you are able as there is a surprise that awaits you inside. There are some other simple, but very effective, illusions and effects throughout.

Theme: NA

Fright Effect: 6.5 Screams

The good haunts (of which Haunted Hydro is one) try to distribute their scares to the front, middle, and back of any group of customers going through the attraction. In this way, the entire group participates in the experience. In our group, we intentionally put the screamer in the front of the line. We wanted to see the effect of the startles and scares on her. Unfortunately, a preponderance of the scares were aimed at the back of our group. Rarely, was the scare given to the front of our group. A better distribution would have really helped the overall fright effect.

Value: 9 Screams

If you are going to go for the $10 single attraction ticket, make it the Hydro. However, we would suggest the combo ticket of $15 for both the Hydro and Rage in a Cage (their chain-link, fog-filled maze). Also, make use of the two dollar coupon at any friendship food store. If you are a college student, come during their college ID nights and get entry into both attractions for the price of one- $10! Any way you look at it, this is one of the best values in the haunted attraction industry.

The Scare Factor: 7.9 Screams

Overview: The Haunted Spook Coop attraction is located in Waynesville, Ohio at 4753 E. Lower Springboro Rd.

We really like this attraction! There is a scare around every corner. Walking through total darkness and fearing what is in front of you is what makes this haunted attraction the total package. The makeup and costumes are very realistic. It's a "must see" for us every year to see what they have changed.

Cast: 7.9 Screams

The cast members are really good. They all do their own makeup and some of them set up their own scenes before the haunted house opens. They play their parts very well and will not let up until they think you are really scared.

Costuming: 7.7 Screams

There were quite a few masks but all the masks work well in the scenes they are in. Nothing looked out of place and we really enjoyed seeing the detail of people’s make up, masks, and costumes.

Customer Service: 8 Screams

The staff is extremely friendly and wants to know where everyone is from and how we heard about them. The parking situation is a little unorganized, but the owner allows non-profit organizations to come out there and collect the money for the parking.

Atmosphere: 8.3 Screams

The atmosphere really makes you wonder what is awaiting you inside the attraction. You hear the screams of customers and the yells of actors as you are standing in line making you wonder how scary a bunch of chicken coops can be. Once you walk through the door that question is answered: Very.

Special Effects: 7.5 Screams

There are not a whole lot of special effects throughout the attraction. What they do have seems to work really well. Some of the special effects were a little delayed, however. You would hear something happening behind you as you were exiting the scene.

Theme: 7.8 Screams

There is no theme other than walking through chicken coops. It is called the “spook” coop for a reason.

Fright Effect: 8 Screams

Having a pitch black maze in the center of the attraction works really well. We found ourselves having to stop in scenes to find out what was going to happen, however.

Value: 8.1 Screams

At $10.00 a person it is well worth the trip out to the Spook Coop to enjoy the walk through the pitch black mazes and walking into the unknown. It is well worth the money.

Haunted Attraction:
King's Island Halloween Haunt
, Mason, Ohio
Website: http://www2.paramountparks.com/KingsIsland/special/haunt/index.html

(Apprentice Team)

The Scare Factor: 8.6 Screams

Overview: Halloween Haunt attraction is located inside Kings Island amusement park. It is located at 6300 Kings Island Drive Mason, Ohio 45034.

There was a lot going on at the park in the way of attractions. There are not a lot of things we would change. It has come along way from 2 years ago when it was Fearfest. They have doubled the attractions and actors. On top of going through the attractions most of the rides are open to enjoy in the dark of night. If they continue to add attractions and actors year after year they will be unbeatable for the money you pay.

Cast: 8.1 Screams

We were impressed with the number of actors the park employs. Not only do they have actors for the individual attractions, but they also have roaming actors through out the park. The wandering actors are a nice touch, however, we noticed they started "clumping" together in certain areas leaving some spots void of any actors and other spots with too many.

Costuming: 8.8 Screams

All the costumes are very detail oriented. All the costumes look like nothing you could buy in a store. The make up is realistic looking and must take a lot of time to apply. There are very few masks through out the attraction, but the masks that are used are very intricate. There is a gentleman in a winged demon costume that scares almost anyone he walks up to. They do very well at matching the costume with the theme.

Customer Service: 8.5 Screams

Everyone was very polite and eager to help.
We think there should have been more signage throughout the park that tell where attractions are located. We really didn’t know where everything was until we walked right up on it. They provide a map of the park, but it was very hard to read. Overall, everyone was super nice and eager to help. The security people seemed to be a little lost. We asked one gentleman where the entrance to the attraction was and he said “I don’t know I just got here”. The trail was a little bit of a problem because the ground wasn’t level and there is a chance for a sprained ankle. There were a lot of pits through out the trail itself. The fog through out the park was great, but in some spots it was a little thick and you would end up walking into other people.

Atmosphere: 9.1 Screams

Everything in the park screams scary. The props start the minute you pull into parking lot to pay for parking. The first thing you see when you enter the park is a man getting electrocuted in an electric chair. The fountain right inside the entrance of the park really gives you a sense of blood flowing.
They have 2 hearses and a HUGE skeleton whose eyes light up which really sets the mood. They even provide the opportunity for customers to have their picture taken while lying in a casket which can then be purchased if so desired. All the themed attractions were really well played out and put you in the mood of what was to come.

Special Effects: 8.9 Screams

The special effects were great. Everything about the special effects screamed scary and haunted. However, we think there should have been more animatronics. We only saw a few props that actually jump out at people. The actors are great, but the animated stuff is just as scary at times. People hiding behind walls that drop down were everywhere but always seemed to scare at least one in a bunch. The 3D effect of the clown house was great. It made it look like the actors were floating.

Theme: 8.9 Screams

There were 10 different attractions all with different themes. All of the attractions, except one, took their theme and ran with it. The Tombstone Terror-Tory was not very well thought out. You start by taking a train to what you think is going to be an awesome ride. You are on the train for literally 3 minutes where you are told a cheesy story and then it dumps you off and makes you walk back. It was a huge disappointment. It felt like that was the attraction no one wanted to work in.

Fright Effect: 8.3 Screams

There were a few key effects that made these attractions great. At the end of some of the attractions was a person hiding in an unsuspected place that would give you one last scare. However, some of the attractions were very open and you could see the actor up ahead so there was no scare factor there.

Value: 8.7 Screams

The price is right in line with what you get--6 hours of haunting and scares. There are also 3 shows that you can enjoy, which are included with the price. If you go on a Friday night it is $ 19.95 from 7p.m. to 1a.m. On Saturday you can enjoy the park all day and the Halloween Haunt at night for $ 24.95. If you are a 2007 season pass holder you can enjoy the Haunt free of charge

Overview: The Panic Box Spookhouse and Krueger’s Korn Maze are located in Springfield, Ohio at 6995 Springfield – Jamestown Rd. (Rt. 72)

These attractions will keep you coming back for years to come. Everything they offer is well in line with the price. Everything these attractions do are phenomenal and leave you in a panic when you leave.

Cast: 8.7 Screams

The cast of both attractions are wonderful and will not let up until they know you are completely scared. The guy playing Freddy Krueger in Krueger’s Maze could pass for the actual character in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. He has the whole package down.

Costuming: 8.5Screams

The costumes that are throughout the attractions are some of the best we have ever seen. They don’t look like your everyday run of the mill Halloween store costumes.

Customer Service: 8.3 Screams

There are well lit signs as soon as you get off the highway that tell you which side of the road the attraction is on and about how far down they are. Everyone there was super nice and really excited about us being there.

Atmosphere: 9.3 Screams

The sound of loud music and the showing of House of 1000 Corpses really put you in the mood. There girls dancing in cages were good, too. Anytime you have to stand in line you can watch a movie making waiting in line almost painless. Over the loud music, you can still hear the screams of the victims that entered ahead of you, which really sets a great mood.

Special Effects: 8.8 Screams

In Krueger’s Maze you are walking through a corn field that you have to find you way through with many unexpected scares along the way. The narrowing walls and crawl spaces are enough to make anyone panic, especially if you are claustrophobic. Trying to find your way through is one of the best elements of both attractions.

Theme: 8.5 Screams

Both of the attractions have different themes and are played on really well. The Panic Box will almost make you hyperventilate and Krueger’s Maze does a good job of making you wonder if you are going to make it out alive.

Fright Effect: 8.7 Screams

All four members of our team agree that these are 2 of the best attractions that we have ever been to. They Panic Box really lives up to its name.

Value: 8.5 Screams

Each attraction is $10.00 per person or you can view both for $ 18.00 per person. You can also take advantage of their $ 1.00 off coupon for single attraction ticket or value attraction ticket. If you lack patience to wait in line, you can pay $ 5.00 extra for a fast pass.

Overview: The land of illusion is a multi-haunt attraction located at 8762 thomas rd. in middletown, ohio and is owned and operated by bao productions.

With several elements added, this score could be much higher. It is a great Halloween experience, but just not as great as it could be. The Haunted Trail is lacking in several key elements, as is the Killer Klowns, but The Temple of Terror and Dr. Psycho’s Haunted Estate pick up the slack.

Cast: 7.5 Screams

The cast here is satisfactory, although, on our visit they were not performing to their full ability. We expected a little more out of them, but they just didn’t seem up to par.

Costuming: 8.5 Screams

Great area! Most of the masks we saw were on the props. About 90 percent of the live actors utilized make-up which is a definite plus.

Customer Service: 8 Screams

Customer Service is great at this attraction. You may experience long lines, especially on the Haunted Trail, but the length is deceiving as the lines do move pretty fast. However, the lack of scares may have been a downfall here. Groups were being sent about every 30 seconds, which caused several groups to catch up with the groups ahead of them.

Atmosphere: 8 Screams

The Land Of Illusion is great in this area. They have a live radio broadcast every night, which adds to the entertainment factor. They also provides a gift shop for all your Land Of Illusion items.

Special Effects: 8.5 Screams

This is the best area of the attraction. The Temple of Terror and Dr. Psycho’s Haunted Estate are special effects based and live up to their full potential. They are “frightening” special effects and they are used well. Dr. Psycho also adds live actors into the mix and they also do their jobs well.

Theme: 8.5 Screams

What more can you ask of an attraction with four different haunts at the same location? Each haunt has it’s own theme and it works well. Whatever your thumping heart craves you will find it here. Each haunt has it’s own intensity level. If you want the full effect of a haunted attraction, you will get it here.

Fright Effect: 7.5 Screams

Several parts are extremely frightening, but others will leave you wondering “Where are the scares?” There are quite a few key elements in place, but it is also lacking in some areas.

We experienced some great moments. For one, there was an area of total darkness in the Temple of Terror where you can’t see your hand in front of your face, but you get someone in front of you that you can definitely see. This caught us completely off guard. We’d like to see more of that.

Value: 8.5 Screams

Paying for all 4 attractions is the best value. At a price of 30 bucks, you save $16 as opposed to paying for separate haunts.

Haunted Attraction:
Chainsaw Creek, Toledo, Ohio

Website: www.chainsawcreek.com
Reviewed by: Team Disembodied Head (Founding Team)

The Scare Factor: 7.41 Screams

Overview: Chainsaw Creek is located in the parking lot of the Westfield Shopping Center on the Sylvania Avenue side. It consists of three attractions- Black Hole, Haunted Prison, and the Butcher Shop.

A legendary ghost town has arisen from the long buried and forgotten mire of the Black Swamp. In October this supernatural town with the sinister past arises to tell its story of dread. Chainsaw Creek in its first year is a frightfully welcome addition to the haunted attraction scene in NW Ohio. Built outdoors in the setting of tents and temporary walls, they are employing the same techniques that have made The 7 Floors of Hell one of the top haunts in the nation. In fact, they employed the assistance of their builders and designers for their layout this year. Time will tell if they can duplicate that success.

Cast: 8.25 Screams

The cast was very good. The owner took actors from the drama department at University of Toledo. All the actors got very into it. They all were in character the entire time. Some of their screams were straight out of a horror movie. Their actors were actually one of our highest rated actors in OH.

Costuming: 7 Screams

The make-up was really good, especially since they only have 2 workers who have experience in it. Too many masks for my taste, but it's their first year. Besides the masks, the make-up was well done; especially in the butcher shop.
Like I said in the website review there are too many masks for my taste. As time goes along, try to gradually get rid of them. It was amazing how good your make-up was, just from getting ideas off the internet.

Customer Service: 6.75 Screams

The plus side about having a haunted house in a shopping mall parking lot is it's virtually impossible to not get a parking spot. There are 3 different haunts, so lines are fairly short and move quickly.

Atmosphere: 7.25 Screams

There are 3 different locations, with 3 different themes. All of them were good. What was unique about their atmosphere was the music playing in the back round. They had music such as David Bowie, and Metallica. One of the coolest things was the "un-solvable maze". I won't talk too much about that, because I never like giving away a good secret.

Special Effects: 7 Screams

The special effects weren't the best here. But for it being their first year, it's hard to afford a lot of them. But what I did like about the effects was that you didn't have to stand there and wait for them. They would activate quickly and on time.

Theme: 7.75

Now, at this attraction there were 3 different buildings, with 3 different themes. The 2 better themes were the Butcher Shop, and The Haunted Prison. The themes were very consistent throughout all 3 though.

Fright Effect: 7.75 Screams

The haunts were laid out in a progression that became obvious as you went through them- scary (eh), scarier (ooh!), and scariest (AHHH!) from Black Hole to Butcher Shop. We have every confidence that this haunt will have less "eh's" and more "AHHH's!" as it grows in experience. As it is, it has some very good moments, especially in the Butcher Shop.

Value: 7.5 Screams

$10 per house. $17 for all three. Well, here is the deal. If there were an option for two out of three, we would say opt for that and skip the "Black Hole." However, $15 would be a more than fair price for the Haunted Prison and the Butcher Shop, so in essence you are only paying $2 for the Black Hole. There is a $2 coupon available on their website, but it isn't valid on Fridays or Saturdays.

Haunted Attraction:

The Scare Factor: 8.5 Screams

Overview: The Chambers of Horror is owned by Ed Short, and is located in the Old Cambridge Inn on University Blvd. in Middletown, Ohio. They have been in the current building for 3 years; the Chambers has been in business for about thirty years.

Overall, this attraction has all the elements in place, with a few minor downfalls. Well worth the time and money to check it out. Some attractions give you a very brief scare and let you go about your way. This one takes a scare and goes with it. The characters are very interactive and know what they are doing. In just its 3rd year of operation at this location, I see many more years to come. It's only going to get better.

Cast: 8.5 Screams

These actors are great at what they do. There are approximately 30 actors in this somewhat small area. It appears they enjoy doing what they do. The cast are always where they need to be, when they need to be there. They get a good scare and keep going with it. They don't just scare you and let you go. That's the way haunted attractions are supposed to be. They lead you one way, and it only sets you up for something else. If you miss the door to the next room, you can rest assure something is lurking. They all work together, and it works well.

Costuming: 8.3 Screams

The costuming is good enough to get by here. There are a few masks, but masks are required for these characters. Nothing is over-done here. The costuming is done to accommodate the scene. Make-up is also done well. It works with the character and not just some random make-up job used as scene filler. Everything fits in the way it should. This is a job well done.

Customer Service: 8.75 Screams

This attraction is easily accessible being on a main road. The only downfall is for people not familiar with the area. There are a few signs as you get close to the attraction, but not much before. There is plenty of parking, so that is not an issue. The staff is very friendly, and there is also a concession window as you are waiting in line. They do their best to accommodate groups by keeping your group together, and allow plenty of time between groups to keep them separated.

Atmosphere: 8.5 Screams

They really do more than you can imagine with the somewhat small size. The building looks, and is small, but keep in mind that they use every possible foot. Like I said before, there are around 30 characters and also close to 30 rooms. There are no dead spots anywhere. There is something around every corner. They make the most of the limited space. Some of the directions aren't clearly marked, but perhaps this is for a reason.

Special Effects: 8.5 Screams

This attraction doesn't rely solely on special effects, but they use them where they are needed. There are no distractions to the feel of the attraction, meaning that there is no excessively loud music playing throughout the attraction. You only hear what is going on in the area you are in. They have great props and they all tie in to the scene. There are effects such as drop ceilings and closing walls that appear when you least expect it. There are no misplaced effects throughout the attraction.

Theme: 7.5 Screams

There really is no theme when it comes to the attraction, but each room has its own theme. There are no multiples going on in any said room. Each room is dedicated to one particular. The characters make this attraction worth checking out.

Fright Effect: 8.75 Screams

Like I said before, the characters are very interactive and know when to get on it. If they get a good scare, they will go with it, even if it means getting separated from your group. Some rooms appear to be empty, but don't count your chickens before they hatch. There are many surprises throughout.

Value: 9 Screams

At $9 a person, this is well worth the price. Bring a canned good and the price is $8. It will take close to 30 minutes to get through the attraction. You will definitely get your money's worth here.

I like that you have many different costumes and faces going on. They seem to fit well in whatever area the actor may be in. The only suggestion I would like to see is less masks. Even though you have quite a few they are great in the roles they are placed, but I would love to see more paint and special makeup. It would truly make the experience more gruesome.

Safety is definitely a major role in serving the public at this attraction and they do a good job at it. They also have DJs, Bands, Radio Stations, an Enormous TV, concession stands, bonfires, and merchandise to buy.

Atmosphere: 10 Screams

From the moment you approach the front of the entrance you see fire at the top of a castle, scary movies playing, and music jamming. While you stand in line you will see patrons scared out of their mind in the fenced in chainsaw maze knowing that you will be next. Haunted Hoochie/Dead Cares does a wonderful job of getting your heart pumping and your pulse racing from the beginning.
The atmosphere was great. The monsters coming out into the line to give some people an early fright. I also like how people in line can see the chain saw maze. That is a nice touch.

Special Effects: 10 Screams

Excellent! This attraction has many special effects and they are everywhere. When you least expect it there will be another effect right around the corner. If you are not scared out of your mind take a breather and look around. There are truly some innovate things that you will not see at any other haunt.

Theme: N/A

This attraction really does not have a theme. It is just gruesome in your face scaring.

Theme: 10 Screams

This is one of the few haunted attraction that uses a theme. Theme is a story that is told and is known to be true about a little girl and her father. The whole haunt carries out this theme in everything and it is a wonderful story line to follow.

Fright Effect: 8.5 Screams

The Scare Factor: 8.25 Screams

Overview: The Gates of Terror is owned and operated by, Marlana and is on a dirt road just outside of Lancaster, Ohio on Tent Church Road. It has been running for 3 years now and is truly a haunt worth visiting.

This is our first year as a Scare Factor Team and The Gates of Terror is our first review. You do not hear a whole lot about this haunt which made us think we were going to be disappointed for the drive, but that was not the case. This attraction was truly a great haunt and well worth the drive. Overall, the Gates of Terror is definitely worth the time and money to check out. For a family owned haunt on their own property this haunt is well thought out and planned. Keep in mind these scores are based on all 5 of the attractions as a whole not 5 individual houses. Take a trip if you dare to see why they say "Screaming is only the beginning."

Cast: 8 Screams

This haunted attraction has a large group of volunteers that are great at what they do. They have to have many because of all the haunts and activities that they provide from little kids to adults to even the nightly DJ. The volunteers are always in the right place at the right time not getting in each others way. They also never just let you go. They may follow you for long periods of time or come back around. Don't ever think you saw the last of them. If you stick around long enough you may even get one to follow you out to the parking lot.

Costuming: 8.5 Screams

This attraction had wonderful costumes and make-up and they were put in the right places to make each one of the attractions a truly great experience. Another thing is that the make up and costumes are done by each individual or with the help of another actor. There are a few masks but not to many and they are in places that happen so fast that you may not even truly recognize the mask.

Customer Service: 8.5 Screams

There was wonderful customer service. There is always someone around with a "security" shirt or a flash light. The walkie talkies with these people get your questions answered in quick time. The only thing about this attraction is that if you are not from the area it may be a little hard to find. Some extra signs would be wonderful.

Atmosphere: 8 Screams

Excellent! There are many things to do and you could truly burn up a whole night here. They have events for the little ones and even a care system. They also have a DJ spinning all of those favorite Halloween tunes. There are 5 attractions for the adults and scary movies playing while you wait. They also have 2 bonfires for those cold nights and don't forget the concession stand with the food and the hot chocolate

Special Effects: 8 Screams

This attraction has some special effects that I have not seen before. Take a look around and see what you can see. Also, don't feel bad when you walk to your car funny, because it is just the result of one of the best special effects at this attraction.

Theme: 7.5 Screams

There is not an overall theme for this attraction, even though each section has its own name and theme. There are two indoor haunts. One is a basic haunt with different nightmares. The second is a circus and clown theme. There is also the Cemetery of Lost Souls, haunted Corn Maze, and Haunted Maze of darkness. There are also special Mazes and haunts for the little ones.

Fright Effect: 8.5 Screams

The cast and the atmosphere make for a really spooky time at this attraction. You will sure get your screams, jumps, and even maybe a chuckle or two out of this attraction. The cast succeeds at learning your name and being there at all times to give you the scare you need.

Value: 9 Screams

This haunted attraction is a great value. Tickets are $14.95 for each adult and $7.00 for children ages 3-9. They also offer different specials for different weekends. They also have a $2.00 off any time coupon. They have group discounts and a great combo deal.

The Scare Factor: 7.9 Screams

Overview: Ghostly Manor is located 2.2 miles north of Rt. 2 on the west side of U.S. Rt. 250 (behind Friendly's restaurant). It operates June through October effectively utilizing its close proximity to Cedar Point.

This was the best year we have experienced at Ghostly Manor. How can we say that when our score is two tenths lower than last years? Well, bottom line is that this review team is made up of the founders of The Scare Factor and we are scoring a bit harder this year. Scores are what they are- a metric for measuring something's effectiveness. But the bottom line is that we feel Ghostly Manor made some significant improvements to their already wonderful attraction. If you've been to the Manor you will love what they have done. If you have never been, make the trip. You will not be disappointed.

Cast: 7.75 Screams

They were very enthusiastic and really got into it. They worked their scares. But more character development would be a plus.

Costuming: 7.75 Screams

Their make-up and costuming is very good every year. They have a make-up specialist on staff that provides training to all the actors. Consequently, most of them do their own make-up.

Customer Service: 8.25 Screams

There's so much to do at this attraction. As I said in the atmosphere category, there is a skating rink. There is a Halloween store, a 3D ride, and the haunt itself. Furthermore, safety is a premium at Ghostly Manor. Sprinkler systems, security cameras, and a well trained, courteous staff insures that you are going to have a good time.

Atmosphere: 7.75 Screams

The haunted house actually takes place inside a roller skating rink. Last year this kind of took away from the experience. But this year they created more separation between the two spaces. This was a really good move. The interior of the haunt was very good too. There is so much detail throughout that you really don't have time to take it all in. Whether it is a dungeon or a child's bedroom, that appropriate atmosphere is created for the actors and the special effects to do their horrifying best.

Special Effects: 8.5 Screams

The special effects are among the best in Ohio. You could tell that they invested in A LOT of new stuff. One of the best was a 3D Motion Ride. It was a motion simulator that took you on a haunted coal mine ride in a runaway coal car. A good point to know is that you can ride it without your seat moving, if you get motion sick easily (such as me).

Theme: N/A

Fright Effect: 7.25 Screams

I think that there was more of a "startle effect" than a fright effect. The actors would scare you by jumping out and screaming. But there wasn't as much fright. But some things did make me jump, which is an accomplishment, because I hardly ever jump. Congratulations on that!

Value: 8 Screams

These are great prices. $10 for the haunt, $6 for the 3D ride. They're both worth it, so take advantage of both these opportunities.

Haunted Attraction:
The Haunted Hydro, Fremont, Ohio

Website: www.thehauntedhydro.com
Reviewed by: Team Disembodied Head (Founding Team)

The Scare Factor: 8.33 Screams

Overview: The Haunted Hydro is located at 1333 Tiffin St. in Fremont Ohio (Beside the old Thornwood Public Golf Course in between Roger Young Park and the Ballville bridge and dam). The Haunted Hydro consisted of three attractions in 2006: The Hydro, The Midevil Stonehenge Maze, and The Legend of Bloody Mary Ghost Story.

There was a day when Haunted Hydro was one of the best haunts in Ohio. That day was October 20, 2006. This was everything a haunt should be- fun, entertaining, safe, and, of course, scary. Haunted Hydro is a smorgasbord of horror providing a slice of the insane, a heaping portion of the macabre and a pinch of comedy. We found ourselves intermittently laughing, screaming and shaking the goosebumps from our skin. This was the best we have seen the Hydro in years and we hope it is a foreshadowing of things to come.

Cast: 9.17 Screams

This was, without question, one of the best casts of the year. The 60 actors haunting the grounds of the Haunted Hydro exhibited all the characteristics we look for. There was great timing, wonderful character development, and excellent teamwork. The scares came from every direction, but these actors offered so much more than just a startle. They engaged the patron with creative banter that added to the overall experience. They were a wonderfully wicked combination of entertainers and frighteners. The Hydro has long had an excellent system in place for the training of its actors. This year they added to that training by bringing in Geoff Beck who produced the DVD "Playing with Fear"; a documentary about the passion and art of haunted attraction performing. Also on hand this night was Todd Poole- co-owner of Screamline Studios, set designer, prop builder, makeup artist and actor. The combination of the training provided by Hydro High (their school for actors) as well as exposing them to these top-notch figures in the industry is producing a new set of petrifying performers to follow in the long line of terrifying talent at the Hydro.

Costuming: 8.83 Screams

We happened to show up on "picture night" for the Hydro. It seems that each year the Haunted Hydro puts together a year book for their actors. On the night photos are taken, the make-up steps it up a notch. All we can say is that if you can find out when picture night is THAT'S the night to GO! The make-up and costuming throughout were some of the best we saw this season.

Customer Service: 8.5 Screams

There is no staff friendlier than the folks at the Haunted Hydro. They are courteous, exceedingly helpful, professional, and (as we found out) well trained. The day after we visited the Hydro, a patron collapsed on their grounds from an apparent heart attack. The staff of the Hydro administered CPR until emergency services arrived. In all likelihood, from the reports, they saved this persons life. We also have to give kudos to the hydro for having the best concessions food of any haunt we visited-Nacho Daddy! Their Hot Chocolate and Tamales were outstanding.

Atmosphere: 7.83 Screams

The Hydro is found on the grounds and in the remains of a Hydroelectric plant built in 1911. It is a great atmosphere. The interior of the Hydro seemed both familiar and fresh. In recent years, the attraction showed it's age, but this year we see that turning around. A little strange was the Mid-evil Stonehenge Maze. The Maze itself was a lot of fun and the actors were on their A-game, particularly the undead pirate who hosted the entrance. However, they seemed to have nothing to do with either being Medieval or with Stonehenge. Also on the grounds this year was a prototype experiential attraction based on the Bloody Mary comic books created by Bobbie Wiener, make-up artists and entrepreneur extraordinaire. This attraction lacked atmosphere, but we understand that this was a prototype and as such it shows some promise.

Special Effects: 7.5 Screams

The Haunted Hydro does not rely on a surplus of high price animatronics, but there are, nevertheless, some great effects. The animatronics utilized either provided or set-up scares well. Drop-downs and sliding panels were all manned and effective. We also especially liked some of the special effects that you just don't really see everywhere such as … well, I'm not exactly sure how to explain it except as "the man on a stick."

Theme: N/A

Fright Effect: 8 Screams

Someone or something will scare you. If it's not a well-placed prop, it will be the ubiquitous chainsaw. If not that, it will be one of the unrelenting walking (or crawling) dead. They have a dedication to your trepidation.

Value: 8.5 Screams

One attraction will cost you $10. $15 dollars will get you into both the Hydro and the Maze. This is a very good deal . Discount Advance Purchase Combo tickets were also available for $13. The Legend of Bloody Mary Ghost show was an additional $5. This experience was mixed for our team, but a portion of the $5 fee went to the IAHA Scare and Care Charitable Giving program. The VIP pass for $25 that will get you to the front of the line may be will worth it on a busy night.

The Scare Factor: 7.6 Screams

Overview: HAUNTED SPOOK COOP IS LOCATED AT 4753 E. LOWER SPRINGBORO RD. IN WAYNESVILLE, OH

The Haunted Spook Coop is a very good attraction full of surprises. A few scenes really stand out, and are also quite scary, depending on how you look at them. When you combine price with scare elements, this is a value no one should resist.

Cast: 7.5 Screams

The cast are amazing here. They really play their parts well and carry out a scare as long as possible, even if it means following you through the attraction. They will even call you by your name when you least expect it.

Costuming: 7.5 Screams

A few masks here, but they don't go overboard. Each costume plays out with the appropriate scene.

Customer Service: 8 Screams

The line moves a little slow, but patience pays off because there is a reason for the slow moving line. The staff are extremely friendly.

Atmosphere: 7.5 Screams

These are actual chicken coops in the middle of nowhere. And yes, there is more than one, and none of them are left out. A bonfire awaits you at the end as well, but there is no chicken on the menu.

Special Effects: 7 Screams

This attraction isn't based on per-say special effects, although what it does have it uses well. This attraction concentrates more on fright.

Theme: 7 Screams

Once again, this is a series of chicken coops, but there are no chickens present. That is unless the word "chicken" pertains to someone in your group. What I'm trying to say here is that the theme is made up by the chicken coops.

Fright Effect: 8 Screams

Plenty of scares. The maze at the beginning is more mind boggling (due to the fact that you can't see your hand in front of your face) than scary, but it's what happens when you make it through the maze that counts.

Value: 8.4 Screams

At $10 a head, this is what is called a bargain. Well worth your money.

Overview: HOUSE OF NIGHTMARES IS LOCATED AT 479 S. LUDLOW ST. IN COLUMBUS, OH. IN THE HEART OF THE BREWERY DISTRICT.

Overall, this is a good experience. Quite a few scares. It's missing a few key elements, but they get the job done when it counts. If you want scares, you will get plenty of them here.

Cast: 8 Screams

The cast is good, but not as good as last year. If you went to this attraction when it was in Bangs, then you will notice a big difference. If you are going for the first time it will be a great experience.

Costuming: 7 Screams

Nothing mind blowing, but enough to get the job done. A few masks, but they don't go overboard. There are a few hair-raising costumes, but it doesn't set itself apart from others. The mental patients are dressed for the part and look like they came straight from the nut house.

Customer Service: 6 Screams

They do get the line through pretty fast, but there are a few downfalls that need work. It is also very hard to find unless you are from the area and know where it is located already.

Atmosphere: 7 Screams

The neon lights in the ticket area add a great effect, but the real effect begins after you get through the kiosk and into the first room, which is a pitch black maze. That sets the tone for what is to come.

Special Effects: 7 Screams

Nothing spectacular. But I will say that they are in a transition period and it may work itself out in the near future. It's not real high on special effects yet, but being the first year at this location, good things are yet to come.

Theme: N/A

Fright Effect: 7.3 Screams

It is pretty scary and we did in fact have a couple well placed screams and jumps here and there. That is what makes the experience worthwhile.

Value: 9 Screams

$15 per person is somewhat steep for the overall experience. The website has a listing of discount days. We would recommend going one of those nights to up the value.

The Scare Factor: 7.78 Screams

Overview: KEIL'S SCREAMHOUSE IS LOCATED IN KEIL'S GREENHOUSE 2.5 MILES WEST OF SWANTON, OHIO ON RT. 2 IT CONSISTS OF THE SCREAMHOUSE AND THE VORTEX MAZE, A 3 D MAZE MORE APPROPRIATE FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN

In their first year of business, Keil's Screamhouse has put together an attraction well worth the trip to Swanton. If you like haunted attractions, take a ride to Keil's Screamhouse to experience the terrifying blend of fun they have planned for you this Halloween season.

Cast: 8 Screams

The cast at Keil's Screamhouse is on it's way to being a stand-out crew in the area. The passion they show for their craft in the first year of this haunt is exemplary. However, some stand out more than others. The vampiric male character just inside the main entrance is outstanding. He sets the mood for the haunt and it is a chilling one. We also particularly enjoyed the kitchen crew.

Costuming: 8.25 Screams

There are a few masks here and there, but they are utilized in the appropriate places IF masks must be used. The make-up is done in part, and very effectively, by Lisa Whiley. Other make-up is provided by the acting crew. All in all it is a solid job.

Customer Service: 8 Screams

Keil's has done several very good things in the area of customer service. First, parking attendants were present and helpful. Ticket sales are well run, though they could operate a little quicker. The queue is organized and well run. There is a concessions stand for those with the munchies. While you wait in line, there is a horror movie playing on a large screen to help set the mood. In addition, they intermittently throw in a live feed from one of their infrared cameras inside the Screamhouse. So, you can see the group that went in right before you screaming in horror! The host at the entrance to the haunt also does a nice job of laying down the rules for the haunt. Then they are reiterated again by the actor just inside the entrance. This is a very good job.

Atmosphere: 8 Screams

I must admit. I wondered just how scary you could make a greenhouse. Well, the answer is pretty scary. The large skull entrance is a nice touch and definitely needed. It tells you right off the bat that this is no longer a greenhouse. The majority of the decorations around the concessions and what we will call the "lobby" are of the cheerful Halloween sort. However, this is still a functioning greenhouse from Monday through Thursday, so this is appropriate. Once inside the Screamhouse, they have done a very good job with lay-out and design. Take some time to notice the details, such as the miniature cemetery found among the rotting flower flats. Nice touch.

Special Effects: 7.5 Screams

This is not a special effects laden attraction. What they have done is utilized effects when they add to the room. They don't dominate. They enhance. This attraction also demonstrates that you don't have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to have good special effects. Sometimes a great effect is achieved by building a clever exit to a room or by building your animatronics in house as Larry, the resident handyman, has done for Keil's.

Theme: 7 Screams

The theme for Screamhouse is a greenhouse gone bad. Something dark and malevolent has happened, transforming this otherwise friendly greenhouse into the Screamhouse. Good idea, and I would love to see Keil's develop this theme more in the years to come.

Fright Effect: 8 Screams

Usually, we like to review in teams of four. On this night, we had two. So, we asked if we could go through with another party. We joined a group of two girls. Did they get scared? Oh yeah. In fact, we had hoped to talk to them after the haunt about their experience. However, they fled so fast we never had the chance. Keil's does a great job and there are a lot of good scares throughout.

Value: 7.5 Screams

The $10 for the Screamhouse is a good price. However, the Vortex is primarily for younger children who may be scared by the intensity of the Screamhouse. So, the combo ticket will probably only interest you if you have children.

Overview: THE LAND OF ILLUSION IS OWNED AND OPERATED BY BAO PRODUCTIONS AND IS LOCATED AT 8762 THOMAS RD. IN MIDDLETOWN, OHIO.

Overall, the Land of Illusion is well worth the time and money to check out. It is this attraction that separates the men from the boys and all the hard work pays off. Keep in mind that this score is based on ALL 4 attractions and not just 4 separate attractions. Make the trip and see for yourself what a true haunted attraction looks like.

Cast: 8.75 Screams

The cast is amazing, especially the cast of the Haunted Trail. The trail has everything your heart desires, from a fire breathing lunatic, a psychotic woman and the Headless Horseman, yes, a Headless Horseman. You also cross paths with Killer Klowns inside a mind blowing fence maze. If you visited this attraction last year, I would encourage you to go again this year, because there are MANY changes. Also included are Dr. Psycho's Haunted Estate and the Temple of Terror, which is the weakest of the four. The Temple consists of mostly props and special effects, with very few actual cast members. If you enjoy props, then this is the one for you. It's just not my cup of tea. Our team encountered quite a few good scares, and if you like being scared, then the Land of Illusion is just for you.

Costuming: 8 Screams

Great costumes make a great attraction, and Land of Illusions IS a great attraction. They put all the right people in all the right places and a few of them make you wonder if they are costumes at all. Out of 4 attractions, there are fewer masks than you may think. Make-up is key to a true haunting experience. Check it out for yourself.

Customer Service: 9 Screams

What is there to be said here when you have 4 attractions and everywhere you turn there is someone with a "staff" or "security" shirt? You don't have to look very far to find anyone if you have a question. Amazing customer service in every form of the word.

Atmosphere: 9 Screams

Excellent!!! Not only do you get 4 attractions to choose from, you also get live radio broadcasts, a game room, a gift shop, and also "Phantom" photos. One can almost spend the entire night here. For those cold chilly nights, there is also a bonfire for everyone to sit/stand around and chat about whatever.

Special Effects: 9 Screams

This is where the Temple of Terror helps. Top quality effects and lighting. Excellent props. This is the main reason it's called the Land Of Illusion. The effects make you feel like you are in a different world. Other attractions need to take a lesson in special effects.

Theme: 8 Screams

Each attraction has an excellent theme behind it. You get 4 different experiences, all with the same outcome…a fun filled night full of scares. Enough to keep the goosebumps with you for weeks on end. The catch of this is that Dr. Psycho's Haunted Estate is rumored to actually be haunted. You can get more information from the website.

Fright Effect: 8 Screams

Once again, this is done as a whole, not each part. What makes this rating what it is is the fact that the Temple of Terror is more of a special effects based attraction with not much fright. Don't get me wrong, the props are amazing and a bit creepy, but let's be realistic, special effects alone won't scare a lot of people…but that is left for the other 3, and it is done well.

Value: 8 Screams

Haunted Trail $14 Temple of Terror $12 Dr. Psycho's Haunted Estate and Killer Klowns $10. Your best bet is to take one of the packages, which are as follows…any 2 scares $20, any 3 scares $25 or all 4 scares for $30. By doing all 4 scares, you are saving a whopping $16. You do the math.

Cast: 8 Screams

The cast was good; there was a lot of variety in the cast. Such as an insane asylum fugitive, a chainsaw swinging maniac, and a bird caller gone mad. But there was also an actor who was funny, and witty, who brought more laughs and fun than fear. I would explain it, but you had to be there.

Costuming: 6.75 Screams

There are some really great moments when it comes to costuming at Scream Acres. They make good use of applications and latex and do so with some skill. However, there are also a lot of masks utilized.

Customer Service: 7.75 Screams

There is so much to do here. Leader's provides a great family environment. There is something here for everyone. Concessions, Hayrides, Corn Mazes, Karaoke, even a Corn Cannon. There is a ton of entertainment available for all ages. I also love the theme nights which you can find out more about on their website. I especially like the Body Snatcher concept. Also, the large sign on route 24 is hard to miss.

Atmosphere: 7.5 Screams

The atmosphere was great, as you can see in customer service there was a lot to do. The actual haunted portion was good too. It was out doors, so I would bring a coat. What I liked about it was there would be little detours in the outside portion where it would be a hallway of an indoor area, which would be themed differently. There was almost a Saw-like hall and a "body shop" (Hint: I'm not talking about cars). To enter the haunt you had to ride a "hellavator" which they made themselves. It was a good atmosphere.

Special Effects: 7.25 Screams

There are a variety of special effects at Scream Acres. They range from simple effects such as hidden corridors to the complex such as a crashing elevator ride. Amazingly, ALL these effects are made in house.

Overview: "This evening, as onlookers watched, “The Ghost ship” Ste. Claire was towed into the dock at International Park in Toledo Ohio. The Ste. Claire got it’s nickname “The Ghost Ship” after vanishing on October 31st, 1991 during a Halloween cruise to Bob-Lo Island, a poplar amusement destination. The ship left Detroit in the early evening hours but never arrived . . . " So begins the legend of Nautical Nightmare.

This attraction was back in Toledo for its 2006 season to deliver its brand of horror. This 100 year old ship is an awesome atmosphere for a ghastly attraction that is sure to scare.

Cast: 7.5 Screams

This ghosts and ghouls that roam the decks of the Nautical Nightmare offer some effective and promising acting. Stationed in Toledo for the first time since 2002, they recruited their actors primarily through radio advertising. However, many of their actors from 2002, as well as actors from their stints in Detroit and Cleveland, sought out sailing with this crew of the damned. There is loyalty here and that will contribute to a consistent and ever improving cast.

Costuming: 7.5 Screams

The make-up and costuming is quality throughout. What makes this more impressive is that many of them do their own make-up. This is the case in many haunts, however in our experience it often leads to substandard applications. However, they go through two weeks of training in order to earn that right and, at least for Nautical Nightmare, it seems to be working.

Customer Service: 6.83 Screams

Advertising and signage were a little understated. As for location, Nautical Nightmare has so much going for it. The Docks is a wonderful and safe area. Its proximity to the waterfront restaurants gives it a wonderful opportunity to create some cross promotion. Parking is a little on the underdeveloped side and if the Nightmare decides to call Toledo its permanent home, they should work to improve this area. Also, we would have liked to seen at least one character working the queue.

Atmosphere: 8.33Screams

The atmosphere at the Nautical Nightmare is definitely one of its strengths. The 100 year old steamer is eerily lit and casts an imposing shadow across the waters of the muddy Maumee. The interior is equally dramatic, capturing the feel of an early 20th century cruise ship that seems to have been lost in time. The music chosen for the ballroom scene helps to heighten this experience. One can imagine the ghosts of long forgotten passengers dancing across its floors as spectral deckhands man the ship.

Special Effects: 6.75Screams

The focus on Nautical Nightmare is definitely on the atmosphere and acting. There are not a high number of special effects or animatronics used in this attraction. However, it is amazing how effective a well placed air cannon or pop-up animatronic can be.

Theme: 7.5

They have a very good theme going here. It is quite logically a haunted steamer. On their website, the entire legend of the ghost ship Ste. Claire can be found. What we would like to see is even more development of that theme on site. We want to feel as though we are actually entering into the story of the Ste. Claire. Few haunts do this very well, but when they do the effect is chilling.

Fright Effect: 7.67 Screams

These actors enjoy their craft too much not to get a good scare out of you. Moreover, you truly have no idea from what direction they may come. Just when you think you have it figured out where the next scare will come from, they hit you from someplace else. It seems as though they use every nook and cranny of this ship, all to provide for your frightening pleasure.

Value: 7.33 Screams

At a cost of $18 a ticket, this price is just a tad higher than we would expect. Mind you, this is a fair price, but it is a little higher than most haunts in the Toledo area. Coupons were available, which always helps.

The Scare Factor: 8.1 Screams

Overview: PANIC BOX SPOOKHOUSE/ KRUEGERS KORN MAZE IS LOCATED AT 6997 SPRINGFIELD JAMESTOWN RD. IN SPRINGFIELD, OHIO

There are many scares to go around, mainly in the Panic Box attraction. Krueger's Korn Maze is more confusion than anything. Overall, if you want a great experience with plenty of scares to go around, and a one-of-a-kind spookshow, Panic Box Spookhouse is the place to get it.

Cast: 8 Screams

Panic Box includes one gargantuan of a character. This guy has to be pushing 7ft. If he's following you, and you look back, you are looking at his mid-section (depending on your own height). Great actors. Go check out the panic inducing giant. Also, Krueger's Korn Maze features an almost exact Freddy Krueger. Personally, the most original Freddy I have ever seen.

Costuming: 8 Screams

This has to be said again. The near 7 ft. tall gargantuan and Freddy Krueger, who you would almost believe is the real Robert Englund, make this attraction what it is.

Customer Service: 8 Screams

Well-lit entrance and signs telling you how far to go. You can't get much better.

Atmosphere: 9.5 Screams

Yes, you read it here folks! Almost a 10. The live Spookshow as you wait in line is one of a kind. Two hot chicks in skirts dancing on a platform behind a cage, AND House of 1,000 Corpses playing on a giant screen says it all. The only reason this score isn't a 10 is because, even though men will love it doesn't mean the women will.

Special Effects: 7.5 Screams

Crawlspaces and rats alone will almost send you into a panic. Especially if these are fears you have. It's not called the Panic Box for nothing folks.

Theme: 8 Screams

2 attractions, both with a different theme. What more can you say?

Fright Effect: 8 Screams

Enough scares to feed a family of 4. I'm not saying its spine tingling or bone chilling, but I am saying that there are quite a few scares here.

Value: 9 Screams

Panic Box Spookhouse and Krueger's Korn Maze are $10 each. Visit both for $18. Plus, $1 off anytime coupons and $3 off value coupons (Fridays only) available on the website.

Overview: TERROR MAZE IS LOCATED AT 6988 SPRINGFIELD JAMESTOWN RD. IN SPRINGFIELD, OHIO

Plenty of scares for a great price. Great customer service and an all around great time. Terror Maze is pure Halloween fun.

Cast: 7 Screams

The cast really have fun and work a pretty good scare. It's all about having fun and a good time is what they have and what they give you.

Costuming: 6.5 Screams

This attraction uses quite a few masks, which lowers the score here. It needs to concentrate more on make-up to make the full effect that much better.

Customer Service: 8.5 Screams

They get you through the line and into the attraction to the best of their ability. There are signs telling you how far you are from the attraction, which are excellent.

Atmosphere: 7.5 Screams

The black hearse at the entrance is a nice touch. That sets the scene for what's to come once you enter. A lot of confusion in some scenes, but for a good reason.

Special Effects: 8 Screams

The props are great, especially in the first scene where you are addressed by reformed serial killer Leroy McCovey. This is a great opening scene.

Theme: 7 Screams

We didn't see much of a theme here other than the opener. Regardless, it's worth the trip if you're looking to have fun and get a few good scares along the way.

Fright Effect: 7 Screams

There are quite a few good scares and that is what haunted attractions are all about. They pull it off with a few surprises.

$10 per person is a good call here. With the addition of a dollar off coupon available on the website, making it $9 per person. This is worth checking out.

Overview: TERROR PARK IS LOCATED AT THE COLUMBUS CLIPPERS BASEBALL STADUIM, JUST WEST OF DOWNTOWN COLUMBUS, BETWEEN TWO CEMERTIES. IT IS OWNED BY THE COLUMBUS CLIPPERS AND OPERATED BY KELLY COLLINS.

In its 8th year of fright, terror Park is quickly becoming a haunted attraction that is a family must see. There are many things that are utilized by this attraction that you will not see anywhere else. It is a wonderful fright filled night for the whole family.

Cast: 8 Screams

Terror park is made up 45 monsters from Feature Creature. These actors are great at what they do and will get a scare or two out of you. Just when you think it is over, it isn't so be aware at all times. If you are one of the luck ones you may have a friend walk you out to your car.

Costuming: 9 Screams

There are 45 different creatures in Terror Park and each one of them looks their best. With 5 make-up artists on hand you will see nothing but the best here. You will never see any rubber masks. It is truly worth going to see the details and thought in each creature

Customer Service: 8 Screams

Terror Park does a wonderful job for the young patrons all the way to the older patrons. The lines move in a quick pace. They have a DJ spinning Halloween tunes while you are in line. They have a concession stand and vendors with things to buy. If any problem should arise there are plenty of people around to ask and if they do not know, they can get you the answer quickly thanks to their walkie talkies.

Atmosphere: 8 Screams

You will experience an eerie feeling as you walk into an empty and dark baseball stadium. The creatures are everywhere. At the beginning you can climb through a hearse as one of the two beginning options you are allowed to choose. The choice you make sets the tone for the rest of the evening.

Special Effects: 8 Screams

Terror Park has special effects that I have never seen at another haunt. They used some everyday things and it will scare you. The special effects add their own unique quality to this haunt.

Theme: 7.5 Screams

Terror Park is one of the few attractions that have a theme. It is called The Gateway To Fear. No matter what your fear may be it will be exposed somewhere through the stadium. As you enter another gate it will be another fear exposed. So stay alert because your fear could be anywhere.

Fright Effect: 7.5 Screams

Terror Park does a great job through the cast, costumes, and atmosphere to give you a good scare or two. However, the scares can be sporadic. It is great for a family to go and have fun together, but some may be looking for something a little more intense.

Value: 7 Screams

I think $13.00 is a little steep for the children at this haunt. There is a $ 2.00 off online coupon that will help and makes it a little more reasonable. There is also a group rate and a speed pass. The best is the Celebrity Pass for $50.00 a person. This allows you to go behind the scenes and much more. Don't forget parking is $3.00 and flash light tours to see the scenes are free. Overall it is worth going to see if you have the money.

Haunted Attraction:
Terror Town

The Scare Factor: 7.34 Screams

Overview: Terror town is located on the Lucas County Fair Grounds. It is owned and operated by Mark Roberts who has been in the industry for twenty years.

This is a good haunted attraction with a very good price. However, the score this year was lower than last years. We wonder if in part that was due to the fact that, this year, we came unannounced on opening night. We think you need to take that into consideration. My guess is that if you wait another week or two before going, you (and perhaps we) would rate it a full point higher. Some things just didn't seem ready. I don't believe they had their full compliment of actors. Some of the room designs didn't appear to be finished. Truth be told, this is not unusual among haunts, but it should be (read my thoughts on our message board). That being said, we have to rate a haunt on the experience we have when we attend. After last years substantial improvements over the year before, we had high expectations. What we got was a good haunt, but not a great one.

Cast: 7 Screams

This is a hit and miss area for Terror Town. Most of the actors were engaged working to produce a good scare. However, there were a few who just didn't seem to know what to do with their selves once they made the initial startle. We would suggest that these actors need to give more attention to character development. They need to have a clearer understanding of how they can work the scare beyond the jump and startle. All in all they do a good job, but there is room for improvement. Couple that with the relatively few number of actors utilized in Terror Town and you have the reasons for our score.

Costuming: 7.4 Screams

We would rate this area as "good", which is what a 7 indicates in our rating scale. On the night we visited, there were only two masks that we could recall. Both were appropriate. One was the mask of the signature host at the entrance to Terror Town. The other was the character from "Saw". Assuming that the same is true this year as last, all the actors provide their own make-up. A couple of them did a very good job. Others were fairly basic.

Customer Service: 7 Screams

This year's score is a little lower than last years. However, this could be due to the fact it was opening night (more about this topic later on and on our messageboard). The signage is still good. The emergency exits are prominent. The parking is adequate. But missing were the food concessions and the host of courteous employees experienced in prior years.

Atmosphere: 7.25 Screams

The exterior was good. The queue wrapped around a graveyard leading up to the entrances of both (three- if you count the oddities sideshow attraction) attractions that wreak the grounds of Terror Town. The interior was at times original, but there were also long stretches with little but the walls around you.

Special Effects: 8.25 Screams

The special effects at Terror Town have a prominent role. They count on a high percentage of their scares coming from the wide range of animatronics they employ. With that being said, Terror Town spares no expense and does a very good job utilizing their effects. You just don't know where a giant creature of one kind of the other may emerge from. However, these props are not always quick to respond, so don't rush through this Haunted Attraction. Take your time in each room. In fact, if your group is a little larger you may want to wait and bunch up before entering a room so that everyone can enjoy the nightmare that unfolds.

Theme: 7.25 Screams

Both attractions in Terror Town were themed this year- The Asylum and The Slaughter House. This was also the area of biggest disagreement on the review team. Some of us felt as though Terror Town had done a very good job here. I particularly liked the Asylum. This theme was carried out very well throughout. The reason for a lower score by others was the seemingly random placement of some of the scares. I must respectfully disagree with them. To me, the affect was entering the terrified and troubled mind of a psychopath. A bedroom quickly morphs into a disturbing nightmare. The asylum laundry room manifests a giant creature of the night. It was like walking through an H. P. Lovecraft novel. For some of us, this was a strength. For others, it needed more work. Thus, our above score.

Fright Effect: 7 Screams

There are some good scares and we had a good time. However, there is real room for improvement here and we wanted to reflect that in our score.

Value: 8 Screams

$10 is a very good value for the Asylum haunt and the additional $5 for the Slaughter House and Freak-a-torium (oddities sideshow) is more than fair.

Haunted Attraction:
Terror Behind the Walls- Halloween at Eastern State Penitentiary,
Philadelphia, Pa.
Website: www.easternstate.org

The Scare Factor: 8.73 Screams

Overview: Eastern State Penitentiary is located at the intersection of 22nd Streed and Fairmount Ave. This 175 year old penitentiary, once the most famous prison in the world, is the ideal setting for a haunted experience entitled, “Terror Behind the Walls.” This immense haunt is actually five integrated, but distinctly themed attractions: "Intake"- your entrance into these sinister cells; "Lock-Down"- forced to traverse a maze of electric fences it soon becomes apparent that you are not alone; "13 Rooms"- an ethereal tour of some of the 'other' rooms in the prison. Just what are they cooking up in the kitchen? "The Experiment in 3-D"- the walls themselves seem to want to reach and touch someone! And finally, "Night Watch"- armed only with a flashlight, you must dare to traverse the haunted prison's halls.

Eastern State Penitentiary (ESP) is just in a different class from your average haunt. It is a huge, big budget, highly professional attraction with a dedicated staff. What does that mean for you the customer? It means that if you have never been to a top tier haunted attraction before, you should be prepared to be "wowed"! For those of you who have been around, it will come as no surprise as to why ESP is mentioned in the same breath with such haunts as Headless Horseman, Bates Motel, and Netherworld. Terror Behind the Walls will give you the fear induced adrenaline fix you seek and leave you screaming for more!

Cast: 7.5 Screams

The cast at Eastern State Penitentiary is selected through a series of auditions in which each section (or zone) leader for the attraction selects actors for their zone. These selections are based on a predetermined number of slots and a specific list of characters they need filled. Their expectations are high for their actors as are ours. On this night, they did not entirely hit the mark. To be fair, the management did inform us that they had an unusually high number of absentees that night due to sickness and at least one family emergency. Consequently, their crew was operating shorthanded. This was apparent in a couple of locations, but all in all the team did a decent job of covering for one another. Beyond that, whether it was due to the additional pressure or the fact that this was their second weekend of business, it seemed that some of the actors were still trying to find their characters. Others, however, were dead on, such as the "Intake" warden and the prison cook. Great jobs!

Make-up and Costuming: 8.83 Screams

Undead inmates and prison guards abound! Throw in the occasional prison doctor and cook and you have the ingredients of a grisly ghoulash. The costuming and make-up are a highlight of ESP. There is not great variety in the costuming, but one has to appreciate the detail as well as the effort to have all their costuming conform to their theme. Nothing is out of place. As for the make-up, their team of artists do an absolutely awesome job. There is great make-up throughout. They utilize a variety of techniques to achieve a myriad of macabre results. Whether its a faceful of gangrenous flesh or an eyeless inmate. The make-up will make you look twice and then, maybe, make you wish you had never looked at all!

Customer Service: 9.33 Screams

The lengths to which ESP goes for their customers and neighbors nears obsession. No haunt we have reviewed works more on this area. We believe this piece is a huge contributor to the success of this attraction. Moreover, any haunt in the country could learn something from studying the customer service policies of ESP. Their handling of their queues is excellent. Besides their well thought out reservation system, they have some of their best actors work the queue while you wait. They are constantly working to improve their parking. They have added remote parking with a constant flow of trolley buses in an effort to alleviate the crowded parking around the attraction. For those that use the remote parking, they get a bonus of ghost stories told by their shuttle host on the trip to the haunt and back. They offer souvenir photos for sale at the conclusion of the haunt. There are concessions and a deejay spinning records. For the neighboring homes and business, they provide free passes. The staff regularly cleans the streets around the attraction. Additionally, they offer quick response to any concerns that come in from the locals. Honestly, we could go on and on. This is how customer service is done.

Atmosphere: 10 Screams

What can one say about a haunted attraction inside an actual penitentiary built in 1829? Two words . . . terrifying perfection. This gothic fortress that was the nightmare of many an inmate, is the dream of haunted attraction affectionados everywhere. Intimidating, purported to actually be haunted, it really IS what every haunt endeavors to be. From the moment you drive down 22nd street and its facade appears out of the night before you, you know that this is an attraction unlike any other.

Special Effects: 7.5 Screams

This year, ESP incorporated more special effects than we remember in any other year. Animatronics, air guns, 3D, even numerous Tesla generators contributed to the efforts to scare. In addition, new elements of detail, particularly in "Night Watch" enhanced the already forboding feel of this facility. Nevertheless, we must say that though the additional detailing was a major plus, the special effects are not always effective.

Theme: 9.33 Screams

We love that ESP takes the risk of adding new themes and areas each year, but they never lose sight of their central theme - they are a haunted prison! This is the defining characteristic of Terror Behind the Walls. Everything else evolves from that DNA. From the individual themes of their zoned attractions- Intake, Lock-Down, 13 Rooms, The Experiment, and Nightwatch- to their costuming and characters, they strive to stay true to their theme.

Fright Effect: 7.83 Screams

On this night, due to working with a reduced number of actors because of illness, the scares were at times a little spread out. Add to that the fact that the attraction was running at full capacity and it's a difficult combo for most haunted attractions- more customers, less actors. Still, so many things lend to the experience of Terror Behind the Walls at Eastern State Penitentiary. You have a one of a kind atmosphere, talented actors, great themes, and a commitment to excellence. Given that this was their second weekend and they encountered some unforseen difficulties, they still filled their hallways with the delighted screams of petrified patrons. We have every confidence that when you visit there will be even more of the same.

Value: 9 Screams

As ticket prices for other haunts rise and Eastern State continues to improve upon their ticketing options, this category is becoming a real strength for this attraction and another testament to their commitment to the customer. There are a myriad of options. Coming during a weekday or Sunday and pay only $20. At most you will pay $30 on a Saturday. Additionally, there is an online coupon for $3 off. There are group packages, dinner packages, and family nights when the scares are not quite as intense and the price is only $10! We would almost always suggest buying your tickets in advance which there are three ways to do described online. The only downside at the moment is the cost of lot parking which is an additional $10. By inner city standards, not bad, but you have to add that to your overall cost for the evening.

Overview: Fright Factory is located at 2200 S. Swanson Street, Philadelphia, PA (Just one block South of Snyder Avenue Behind the Ikea, and next to Forman Mills!) (215) 33-GHOST. It is conveniently located by Philadelphia's waterfront and is easily accessible from Interstate 95.

There are different kinds of horror movies. There are the big budget Hollywood blockbusters with their millions of dollars of special effects. Then there are movies like "Evil Dead" which Bruce Campbell and friends turned into a Horror Film Classic. You can't really compare it with those other films. Yet, it exceeds many of them in the minds of fans through it's originality and frightful fun. Fright Factory is the Evil Dead of Haunted Attractions. Missing are the thousands and thousands of dollars of props and special effects, but what remains is an original and fun attraction that takes great pleasure in scaring the bejeebers out of you.

Cast: 8.67 Screams

Once again the cast at Fright Factory proves itself to be among the scariest, creepiest assemblage of characters in any haunted attraction. These actors attack their characters with abandon. The result is a full on, in-your-face assault of ghoulish scares. A few notables that we loved were the cheerleader who led us into Horror High and the insane, head-caged woman roaming the entrance and queue to the attraction. This was the second official night of business. As such, the actors were not yet on their A game. Nevertheless, they were still better than most.

Costuming: 7.67 Screams

There are some great make-up jobs in Fright Factory. This is due in large part to resident make-up artist Ian Butterer. Ian, utilizing his degree in special effects make-up and his skill with an airbrush, applies his craft with grizzly effect to the fifty-plus actors in need of his expertise each night. The results are, in some cases, grotesquely wonderful. They are effective in nearly every case.

Customer Service: 5.67 Screams

Located in a spreading retail and warehouse district of Philadelphia, Fright Factory takes your safety seriously. Security is present and engaged in providing a safe and fun atmosphere. Exit signs are well lit throughout the attraction. The exterior of the facility is also well lit. The major area for improvement is in the area of signage. Fright Factory is not immediately visible from any major road and there is virtually no signage to speak of to point you in the right direction.

Atmosphere: 7 Screams

The exterior of Fright Factory can be deceiving. We have seen much less successful haunts with far more elaborate exteriors. Ultimately, however, when it comes to a haunted attraction, it's what on the inside that counts. Fancy exteriors can be deceiving, as the interior is where the haunting really happens. Fright Factory is aptly named given it's location and the interior is creepy, indeed. It is one of the only haunts we've reviewed that one descends into it. As you enter, you head down into the eerie remains of this abandoned factory. Concrete, pipes, and the smells of age fill it's halls. From the moment you enter Fright Factory sets the stage for its frightening brand of entertainment.

Special Effects: 6.5 Screams

What Fright Factory does is effectively demonstrate how to do special effects without investing the big bucks into animatronics. They rely on atmosphere, theme, and acting to create the desired scares. However, they do create some very nice effects utilizing dead end hallways and hidden passages. Additionally, the actors make very good use of hidden doors, drop-downs, and other assorted distract and scare techniques to dreadfully wonderful effect.

Theme: 7.83 Screams

Three distinctly themed attractions exist inside Fright Factory. The first is Horror High. Your first day of class is greeted with a little school spirit in the form of an undead cheerleader. The halls are filled with the tattered remains of a class that was dismissed long ago, but refuses to leave. Next is the Asylum. Who knows what forbidden experiments have taken place in the dank and dirty cells of this prison for the insane? You will when you dare to enter. Finally, there is Village of the Damned. The macabre retirement community for the monstrous. We love well-themed haunts. Fright Factory has done a nice job here. There could be a little more detail in the Asylum that helps to indicate the theme, but all and all this is a solid effort in this area.

Fright Effect: 7.67 Screams

Fright Factory is not for the feint of heart. This haunt feeds on fear and the inhabitants can smell it. Blood-curdling screams are not an unusual sound. If you love intense, in-your-face kinds of haunts, Fright Factory is the place for you. Again, as we've mentioned earlier, this was only the second night of operation. Our score was based on our experience that night. However, having been to Fright Factory before, we have every confidence that this number will be dialed a little higher as the season presses on.

Value: 8 Screams

$25 for a quality haunt that's over 30,000 square is a good deal. On top of that, be sure to go to the website and print off the $2 coupon. Additionally, Fright Factory, being an experienced attraction, knows that opening weekend is a time to work out some of the kinks. For this they offered a buy one, get the second ticket for half off.

Overview: THE BATES MOTEL AND HAUNTED HAYRIDE IS LOCATED AT 1835 N. MIDDLETOWN ROAD, GLEN MILLS, PA. IT CONSISTS OF THREE ATTRACTIONS- THE HAUNTED HAYRIDE, THE BATES MOTEL, AND THE HAUNTED CORN MAZE.

When you enter the hayride wagon, it seems benign enough. But, when the ominous soundtrack begins to play and your tractor-pulled wagon rounds the first corner to reveal the looming façade of a torch lit castle with its gaping mouth entrance, you know this is no ordinary hayride. This is one of the great haunted attractions in the United States. You will be, at times, astonished and startled as you traverse the gruesomely grandiose grounds of the Bates Motel and Hayride. Be sure to check-in to this malevolent motel. But beware! You may never check-out!

Cast: 8 Screams

The seventy actors who make up the cast of Bates Motel do Norman Bates proud. Throughout the three attractions, the actors do a great job of providing scares a plenty. On the hayride and corn maze, the actors concentrate on high startle and do it very well. In the Bates Motel there is some additional character development. Some notable favorites were the little girl in the playground who executed her creepy character to perfection and Mother Bates who held her scare to just the right moment.

Make-up and Costuming: 8 Screams

There are quite a few masks and we would like to see that reduced. But when the make-up is good, it is very good.

Customer Service: 8.25 Screams

The night we were at Bates Motel, there were an estimated 5,000 people there. It looked every bit of 7,000. The crowd was humungous. If ever customer service was going to be tested, this was the night. Bates Motel does an admirable job of insuring that the people on their grounds have a good time in a safe environment. The entire establishment is fire inspected and up to code. Security and safety personnel are ample and on the ready. Both the hayride and motel are handicap accessible and the staff is ready and prepared to help those who have trouble getting around. This was especially appreciated by me on this night as I had my father who walks with a cane with me. There is also a concessions stand for those who need to warm up with a hot chocolate and a "making of" movie about the Bates Motel and hayride showing for those waiting to enter the hayride. All-in-all they do a great job.

Atmosphere: 9.5 Screams

The facades to each of the attractions are imposing and once inside they just get better. The haunted hayride has sets that are so incredibly impressive that it is reminiscent of another attraction- the backstage lot tour at MGM Studios in Disneyworld. It's like a backstage lot tour into your nightmares. The attention to detail given to each piece of the atmosphere is awesome. For instance, as your wagon makes its way through the woods, the soundtrack switches to that Dr. Demento favorite, "Their coming to take me away." Moments later, your wagon drives through the main entrance of the asylum. Throughout the timing of such moments is flawless. Also, take note of the awesome interior of the mineshaft or check out the wallpaper in the Bates Motel. That's no ordinary ivy border- it's poison ivy! It is that kind of painstaking care that makes Bates Motel a benchmark for other haunts who hoped to achieve such gory greatness.

Special Effects: 9.75 Screams

No haunt that this review team has been to does a better job with its special effects. From the large and elaborate to the simple, but creative, all are utilized to their ultimate effectiveness. There is a full-size, truly fire-breathing dragon. There is a man being sawed in two. But also, don't miss the "haunted funeral" or the vampiric woman that flies overhead of your wagon! The one-of-a-kind special effects just go on and on. These are truly some of the best we have seen and amazingly they are almost exclusively built onsite by their design team.

Throughout the hayride, there are several thematic sets that are developed with ghoulish realism. The Bates Motel is (what else) the horrifying home of that most infamous and twisted of families- the Bates'. Mother Bates is present, as well as the expected shower scene. Of course, the motel has a few other guests to add to your gruesome stay. The corn maze gives one that chilling children of the corn feel. Each of these areas develops their theme with sinister success.

Fright Effect: 7.5 Screams

There are plenty of startles and scares to be found, however the real strength of the Bates Motel is its ability to entertain. The cornmaze and motel provide more of the close-proximity, high intensity scares that some are looking for. BUT DO NOT MISS THIS HAYRIDE! It is a jaw-dropping, eye-popping, experience. It is THE linchpin of this attraction and is what makes it a must-see. Oh. And do not misunderstand me. It, too, has it's ferociously frightful moments, such as when a band of marauding maniacs armed with chainsaws boards your wagon.

Value: 9.5 Screams

There are several great things about the pricing at Bates Motel. One- the parking is free. Not always a given at attractions. Two- you can purchase tickets for individual attractions. So, if you do have a family and only want to hit the hayride you can do so. There are also child discounts for children 12 and under. The combo ticket for all three attractions is very well priced at $30. The VIP pass is expensive at $60, but on a busy night this can be the difference between a couple of hours of waiting and getting right into an attraction. In any event, you will definitely want to cut down your wait time by purchasing tickets in advance online. In this way you bypass the ticket sales line which can be quite lengthy itself.

Haunted Attraction:
Terror Behind the Walls- Halloween at Eastern State Penitentiary,
Philadelphia, Pa.

The Scare Factor: 8.81 Screams

Overview: This 175 year old penitentiary, once the most famous prison in the world, is the ideal setting for a haunted experience entitled, “Terror Behind the Walls.” This immense haunt is actually five integrated, but distinctly themed attractions: "Intake"- your entrance into these sinister cells; "Maximum Security"- where it soon becomes apparent who's running the asylum; "13 Rooms"- an ethereal tour of some of the 'other' rooms in the prison. Just what are they cooking up in the kitchen? "The Experiment in 3-D"- the walls themselves seem to want to reach and touch someone! And finally, "Night Watch"- armed only with a flashlight, you must dare to traverse the haunted prison's halls.

Eastern State Penitentiary is a dementedly intoxicating mixture of skin-crawling atmosphere and spine-tingling scares. It's looming gothic walls are like the fine decanter to it's vintage blend of blood, beasts, and bedlam within. Every haunt enthusiast should taste it once, and if you do you will want to imbibe again and again.

Cast: 7.75 Screams

We LOVE a good cast at The Scare Factor. That's one of the reasons why we love Terror Behind the Walls at Eastern State Penitentiary. This is a first rate cast with some memorable characters. Again, this is due in large part to the attention taken by Eastern State Penitentiary to insure that they hire and train quality actors. Eastern State Penitentiary knows what it wants out of each actor in each position that they place them. They are auditioned, coached, and evaluated. The result is a wonderfully wicked combination of creatures throughout Terror Behind the Walls. However, we would recommend to the customer to pay the extra money and go on a Friday or Saturday night. On this night, a Thursday, they were not carrying a full complement of actors and we could notice the holes in the action throughout the attraction.

Make-up and Costuming: 9 Screams

What we think is great about the make-up and costuming at Eastern State Penitentiary is how consistent they are. They are consistent to their theme and consistent in the quality of their make-up. When you have 120 actors, obviously more attention is going to be given to some than others. That is just good use of resources and time. The key is picking the right actors to give those resources and time to develop. They do that as well as anybody. The costuming befits the environment. Guards and inmates are roaming the halls of this purgatorial prison. Throughout (if you're not running through as many do!) you will notice ample use of prosthetics and appliances as well as great make-up to create some terrific effects. One thing you will not see- there is not a single mask among the 100+ actors.

Customer Service: 9.25 Screams

There is so much positive to mention here. First off, their ticketing system and queue management is the best we've seen. However, to take advantage of it, we highly recommend buying your tickets in advance. Eastern State Penitentiary sells its tickets in half-hour blocks. The concept is similar to the "Fast Pass" at Disney. If the half-hour slot listed on your ticket is 7 PM- 7:30PM, you should arrive and be in line within that window. Their goal is to then have you through the front gates within a ½ hour of your arrival. Once through the front gates there is still a queue to wait in, but it is not without its entertainment. Again, buying your tickets in advance is very important, especially if you plan on attending the last two weeks of the attraction. Without advance tickets, you may arrive at 7 PM, but your time window for entry may not be until 10 PM. In addition to the advance ticket sales, there are a number of other coupons and packages available. Too many to list! Get on their website to check out their hotel, group, and dinner packages, among others. Another offering that we saw for the first time this year was the "Intake" photo. A souvenir photo of you and your group can be taken at the beginning of the haunt. When you exit, the photo is available for purchase. Beyond that we could list many other positives- handicap accessibility, great staff, concessions, a high regard for safety, free museum, etc. Also new this year- off-site parking that provides transportation on the "Ghost Bus" to the penitentiary. Local ghost stories are shared on the bus as you make your trip to the penitentiary. Customer service is a stand-out area for Eastern State.

Atmosphere: 10 Screams

When it comes to atmosphere, this is truly one of the great haunts in the nation. The setting of a 175 year old penitentiary is creepy in and of itself. However, that entire atmosphere could have been squandered in the wrong management hands. The crew at Eastern State Penitentiary does a great job of enhancing it. Let me say a little more here. Last year, I had a few (like 2) website fans mention their disappointment that you don't walk through more of the actual prison. This puzzled me, because my experience last year clearly gave me the sense that I was in the prison. So, I took particular care to pay attention to this area this year. I'm still puzzled by their comments. First off, the entire attraction is IN the prison. But moreover, you do walk through actual corridors, past actual cells in actual cell blocks. There are sections where you are in the maintenance corridors with the absence of cells, but this is still very effective and creepy. I think, probably, these people are speaking of the existence of fake floors and walls in certain sections of the haunt. However, let me give you an appreciation for what Eastern State does and MUST do in some of these areas. Eastern State is an actual 175 year old penitentiary. It is also a protected historical site. That means there are certain regulations that Eastern State must adhere to that no other haunt I know of in the country must adhere to. In some of these areas they are prohibited from allowing the public to walk on the actual floors or even touch the walls. In some areas, they have to literally build hallways within a hallway in order to use the space. Even so, these fake walls are used with great effectiveness and, when possible, you see plenty of the actual penitentiary.

Special Effects: 8.25 Screams

The mastery of Eastern State Penitentiary is not found in its use of expensive animatronics and elaborate special effects. However, that does not mean they are without their effective use of special effects. Their drop-downs and hidden entrances are used superbly by their cast. Don't be surprised if the cast comes at you from any direction, including above! Other effects, such as the cage with the fake wall, provide simple, but heart-stopping, moments. Eastern State also sports one of the best 3-D attractions we've seen. The walls are alive with ghastly images, all which seem to reach out and beckon you to join them.

Theme: 10 Screams

We have been to quite a few haunts at The Scare Factor and we haven't seen anyone who does a better job of theming then Eastern State Penitentiary. From the moment you enter, it is clear that YOU are the prisoner to the terror behind the walls. All five attractions provide a different piece of the experience. Even the answer as to how this evil was unleashed is provided in "The Experiment", where we learn that the penitentiary doctor has been performing demented procedures on the inmates, loosing a demonic power into this possessed prison.

Fright Effect: 7.75 Screams

You can learn a lot about a haunt just by standing around the exit. That is exactly what we did for about a half-hour. This is clearly a haunt that scares the bejeebees out of some people. This year, Eastern State Penitentiary took a big risk in trying an all new concept in the last of their five attractions. Last year, this was "Tunnel Escape." This year, Brett Bertolino and his staff came up with the idea of "Night Watch." When brainstorming for this year's season, the staff agreed that the scariest moments in the penitentiary were at night when you were alone in the dimly lit halls. They wanted to capture that experience for the patron. In "Night Watch", each person is given a flashlight to traverse the dark passages. The parties of people are staggered more than usual in the hopes of giving you that feeling of being alone. We love the effort by Eastern State to tap into a whole different level of scare. The success is spotty; but if they can perfect this concept, the "fright effect" of this haunt could go through the roof.

Value: 8.5 Screams

At $30 for a Saturday ticket, this is not a cheap night out. However, it is a great value when compared with other haunts. Moreover, a $3 coupon is available online. You can cut your cost even more by coming on a Friday ($25 not including coupon discount). The price again drops for weeknights and Sundays, but so do the number of actors. So, we suggest sticking with a Friday or Saturday. You will likely pay another $10 for parking if you want to use a lot. But, with a car or van load of people, this is not too bad. Also, be sure to check out the many other package deals online.

Haunted Attraction:
Fright Factory, Philadelphia, Ohio

Website: www.frightfactory.tv

Reviewed on October 13, 2006

The Scare Factor: 7.91 Screams

Overview: Fright Factory is located at 2200 S. Swanson Street, Philadelphia, PA (Just one block South of Snyder Avenue Behind the new Ikea, and next to Forman Mills!) (215) 33-GHOST. It is conveniently located by Philadelphia's waterfront and is easily accessible from Interstate 95.

If what you want out of a haunt are blood curdling screams and sleep-depriving, nightmare-inducing horror, then you have come to the right place. Fright Factory is, without question, one of the scariest haunts we have reviewed. The group of twenty-somethings we went through with were entertainingly terrified from beginning to end. This is the work of a fanatical group of actors who are absolutely committed to scaring the daylights out of every lost soul that wanders through their hallways.

Cast: 9 Screams

Wow! Or should I say, "Aaaahhhh!" That's what this cast will have you saying (er, screaming). From beginning to end, this cast worked their scares with a zealousness we've experienced in few attractions. Throughout, there were plenty of startles provided by a host of mutilated and grotesque ghouls. But, there was also character development. It was more than just someone saying, "Boo!" (although hilariously there was even an actor who classically delivered this most cliché of lines, eliciting a shriek from the recipient) The actors delivered great dialogue, adding to the overall eeriness of their attraction.

Costuming: 8 Screams

There was some really wonderfully macabre work done in this area. There is plenty of blood and gore, but a few of our favorites were the girl in the head cage and the eight foot tall Frankenstein's Monster. Most of the creations are not elaborate. But they are very effective, proving that sometimes the simplest ideas are the scariest. Many of the actors bring their own ideas to the table, which are then brought to life by their resident make-up artist, Ian Butterer. Ian has a degree in special effects make-up and his talent shows throughout.

Customer Service: 6.75 Screams

Safety and security are clearly important. Fright Factory is located in a warehouse district of Philadelphia, which could be a deterrent to some. It shouldn't be. This is a safe area and Fright Factory takes steps to insure that these are not the kinds of "fears" you have when coming to their haunt. Local law enforcement and paid security are ever present. We would ask for some more signage to direct us to the attraction. Though we had mapquest directions, we passed the street and never saw the attraction. It was not until we made about a four block loop and came up the street from the opposite direction that we found it. In all that time, we never saw a sign. However, once you find it, parking is free and ample.

Atmosphere: 7.5 Screams

The interior of this building is spooky in and of itself. When you first enter you traverse a part of this warehouse before reaching the attraction. Honestly, that alone was very creepy. You almost expect to hear the long "nails" of Freddy Kreuger running along the walls and piping. What Aven, Robert Dudzich, and crew have done with the remainder of the haunt is very admirable. The lay-out, decorating, and lighting are all done very well.

Special Effects: 6.75 Screams

Throughout the entire haunt, we saw, we think, one animatronic. And we were fine with that! Honestly, this place did NOT need them. When it comes to timing and engaging the patron, an animatronic can never replace an actor. Fright Factory has opted for low-tech, high effectiveness. A high-end animatronic is easily in the five figure range. They have chosen to invest that money into their actors and atmosphere. We think it is a good call.

Theme: 8.25 Screams

Fright Factory stands out as an example of how to do great theming, even when your structure doesn't necessarily lend itself to a particular theme. Fright Factory could have just settled for the generic mish-mash of haunted rooms, but instead they have developed three uniquely themed attractions with resplendently repulsive results. The halls of Horror High are littered with the tattered remains of the student body, both literally and figuratively. The Asylum is the tomb of the interned lunatic fringe of Philadelphia. Village of the Damned is like some demented retirement community for the classic horror monster. For even more detail, visit their website and watch the original short film based on Horror High!

Fright Effect: 9 Screams

Yes! Yes! Yes! Fright Factory is an attraction worthy of its name. This is the highest fright effect score we have given out to date. The dazzling array of repulsive figures that scare, stare, and stalk you throughout the halls of Fright Factory make this a truly scary haunt.

Value: 8 Screams

At $20, this is a great deal. Be sure to go online and print out your $1 off coupon. If the night is a busy one, the RIP pass is probably worth it at $30.

Comparing Reviews

The Scare Factor is unique in its approach to reviewing Haunted Attractions. A standardized review system is used by all our teams. Also, an orientation with training is given to our teams. Additionally, each review is read over by a general editor and one of the owners. While we cannot eliminate the subjectivity of a team, we can and do work to minimize it. Another factor to be considered when comparing reviews is the experience of the team reviewing. The more years and attractions reviewed by a team the more solid and objective their review will be. Here is a guide to team experience:

The Founding Team

This team is made up of the founding members of The Scare Factor. This team has a great deal of experience at rating haunted attractions and a knowledge of the industry. Their reviews, are consequently, among the most in depth and demanding offered by The Scare Factor and in the industry.

Veteran Team

This team has at least one year of experience. They are growing in their ability and experience in reviewing haunted attractions. They are also increasing their knowledge base through increased training. With each year under their belt, their reviews are expected to increase in depth and objectivity.

Apprentice Team

An apprentice team is in their first year of reviewing haunted attractions. Through the interview process, the team has demonstrated a passion for the industry and a willingness to be coached. While no review is posted if it is felt to be inaccurate, first year review team scores may be more volatile than those of experienced teams. Given a successful first year, an apprentice team is invited back to become a veteran team.
