Final Score: 8.14

Summary:

Sandyland Acres Haunted Hayride is in their 6th year of offering Halloween fun and scares for the whole family! New for 2011 is Farmer’s Revenge where you will let your senses do the trick as you face the dark passageways and twisted creations that the farmer’s barn has to offer. The hayride will take you through the dark trails of inhabited corn and over the river and into the woods where fire-spitting vehicles and your funeral await you. If you think these attractions may be too much for your little one don’t worry they also have a very kid friendly hay maze so they can have fun too (under your supervision, of course)! If you have been looking for a haunted attraction you can take your children to on a Friday or Saturday night, look no further than Sandyland Acres Haunted Hayride, where the cinemas of horror and original ideas come to life!

Cast: 7.4

There are 50 paid actors divided up between the two attractions and some will pop up every now and then to entertain the crowd. The crew goes through a job fair each year as well as acting classes to gear up for the season. The majority of the actors inhabit the trail and cornfield that the hayride winds through, but there are still a few inside of the ghostly barn where the farmer WILL have his revenge! All of the cast know their roles very well and are in context with the theme.

Costuming: 8.05

Costumes are both bought and purchased. Most that were bought seem to have custom additions here and there to make them seem more realistic. The hayride’s characters seemed to steer more towards a demented hillbilly approach with costumes varying from raging rednecks to what appeared to be a bride and groom until we reached a drive-through barn. Inside, we found a collection of fears including a mad doctor, ravenous zombies and Santa Claus, who looked like he was preparing for a ‘rough’ winter. Inside Farmer’s Revenge, the few actors we saw were disguised in some of Sandyland’s most horrific attire. All actors were once again in context with their respective themes and were detailed well.

Customer Service: 9

There is a large, well-lit white sign and truck with rotating lights right next to the road letting you know you have arrived at Sandyland. You will be directed into a big grassy area where parking is free and some of the haunt’s friendly staff will direct you to the nearest spot! Tickets can be purchased at a large ticket stand where you can also order food at Auntie Susie’s Haunted Kitchen and where friendly staff are available to answer any questions you may have. There are portable restrooms located near the ticket booth as well. The hay wagons are very safe, the actors do not touch, and safety codes/procedures are up to date. However we didn’t notice many exit signs in the barn. A ‘glow wagon’ is set up next to the waiting line for the hayride where a variety of glowing items can be purchased for your child’s safety (‘so the monsters won’t get them’). When you exit the hayride make sure you stop by their small gift shop where they offer many Halloween knick-knacks, haunt memorabilia, and you can have your picture taken with an actor for a small fee.

Atmosphere: 8.5

The atmosphere of the attraction provides an overall feeling of Halloween fun and excitement. The attractions are hosted on a family-owned farm and the large barns, silos, straw bales, and huge farm house at the entrance of the property reinforce the authenticity of the Haunted Hayride and Farmer’s Revenge.

Theme: 8

The Haunted Hayride features cinemas of horror and other grisly maniacs while Farmer’s Revenge is based off of more general and original ideas. It is evident that the creator’s of this attraction truly do have a passion for horror and they want you and your family to have a great time experiencing it!

Fright Effect: 7.46

This attraction likes to keep their attraction kid-friendly in order to provide entertainment for the whole family. If you are afraid of the dark, you are going to get scared! They offer sudden surprises around many corners in Farmer’s Revenge as well as many places on the hayride. There are actors hidden within the corn that offer sudden surprises as well as a loud gun shot, fire-spitting vehicles, and the tractor with a mind of its own which does not like the hay wagon in its cornfield! Being scared on a hayride is a little harder than being scared in walk-through attractions, which your journey through the barn will prove! There are many sudden startles and disorienting crevices inside the barn that will leave your senses in a bind. Most everyone in your group will get a scare in Farmer’s Revenge and watch out for unexpected visitors on the hayride… you just never know what may happen!

Value: 8.33

General admission is $12.00 for the hayride and $10.00 for Farmer’s Revenge. A combo ticket can be purchased at $20.00 for general admission into both haunts. They also offer a VIP ticket for the hayride for $15.00. Tickets for your little ones to get into the hay maze are $3.00. This is a good deal for an estimated 35 minutes (depending on if you can escape becoming another prop in the barn) of family entertainment and is worth purchasing the combo tickets to experience both haunts.
