Final Score: 9.17

In 2012, Fear Fair has once again created a demanding environment for it’s customers. For their 12th season, they have added a mind-blowing new addition this year. This 6500 square foot addition
replicates downtown Atlanta which puts you face-to-face with flesh eating ‘Walkers’ from the popular TV series The Walking Dead! These ‘Walkers’ aren’t very smart but they sure can sniff out the living from a mile away! Hangar 17 has returned for another season and is as aggressive as ever! This for sure is one military troop you do not want to mess with since they become tremendously impatient if you even show slight hesitation in listening to them! They will push, pull, and possibly even pick you up and carry you to what they consider ‘safety’ for you and your group. The Cinema of Fears is also back this season, bringing some of your favorite horror movies and characters to life! This haunt replicates these horror movie scenes and characters like no other, you must see them to believe it! If you are looking for an intense, comfort zone-smashing, realistic horror film experience, then Fear Fair, ‘Indiana’s Scariest Haunted House’, needs to be added to your must-see list!!

Cast: 9.19

Fear Fair has between 60 and 80 volunteer cast members which can vary on different nights. The crew attends a training event called ‘Fear Camp’, where many great actors from various haunts come together to teach and learn various scare tactics, effective scaring, and safety training. (This training event is free and held in August of each year for anyone interested in attending.) Some of these cast members continue to enhance their aggression and intensity which plays a major role in making them believable. However, there were several characters that weren’t aggressive at all such as the ‘Walkers’, making them less believable. Most of this crew was great at staying in context with the theme but we noticed that in Cinema of Fears Pinhead told us to ‘move our ass’ when this was something repeatedly yelled at us in Hangar 17. This cast provides aggressive hands-on physical interaction in several areas that will have you one edge, but didn’t show as much verbal interaction with our group that we have experienced at other haunts. Some of the most memorable characters were the soldiers in Hangar 17, Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, the Creeper, Jason Vorhees, cat lady, and Zee Doktor because of their intensity and believability.

Costuming: 9.4

Costumes are supplied for each character by the haunt itself. Though they were all in context with the theme and matched their respective scenes very well, a few weren’t as authentic as the rest. Silicone masks are mostly used for the movie characters except in places where others types are needed for realism. Makeup is applied by a designated team of 8 artists and portrays their amazing talent! The combination of realistic masks and makeup along with authentic attire and additional detail makes the majority of characters found in Fear Fair some of the most convincing we’ve come across!

Customer Service: 8

Finding Freeman Field is pretty easy, but once you have made it that far, it can be a bit confusing from the lack of signage. Our GPS took us to the right road, but some devices can be less-than-perfect at leading you to your destination’s doorstep, and Freeman Field has plenty of disorienting roads and buildings that have been known to keep us driving in circles for longer than we care to admit. Fear Fair has a dimly-lit exterior anyway and this makes it difficult to find them if you don’t know exactly where they are. But once you have arrived at Fear Fair, there is plenty of free but dimly lit parking around the building and portable restrooms are present for customers’ convenience. As we navigated our way through the haunt, we came across several sets of poorly lit stairs as well as unexpected thresholds and some head-knockers, so make sure you try to watch what is above and below you at all times. There were, however, plenty of emergency exits in case you need to take the short way out, the haunt is up to code, and all staff members have taken emergency situation training. Friendly crew members can be found inside the ticket booth in case you need to ask them anything as well as outside the attraction in haunt-related attire. On the night of our visit we did not notice any characters roaming around outside like we have in the past, but there were a few military personnel at the entrance of the haunt to make sure the crowd is under control. T-shirts can be purchased at the ticket booth for $15.00. Snacks and drinks are also available, and a hot dog stand was located in front of the haunt but was not open at the time of our visit.

Atmosphere: 8.8

Fear Fair remains located in an old U.S. Army barracks building. The décor displayed outside the attraction continues to add authenticity to the whole military theme. The sound of chainsaws, gun shots, yelling, and screaming can be heard, but other than what seeps out of the haunt it seems a little quiet as you approach the building. A good deal of special effects are used throughout the attraction as well as music, but some of the scene-specific tracks could be heard from other areas where it didn’t belong.

Special Effects: 9.6

Some of the special effects used at Fear Fair are bought but most of them are custom designed either for or by the attraction. That being said, this haunt has a lot of effects that you won’t see at other attractions in the area. Some of these are their giant Tesla coil, the Hellraiser cube that you must walk through, a rocking train car, a monster on an Army jeep, to buildings and a paved road that recreate a downtown Atlanta scene from The Walking Dead!! Because of their originality, excellent detail and effectiveness, the special effects at Fear Fair are debatably some of the best in Indiana!

Theme: 9.8

Fear Fair is divided into two different themes. The first portion of the attraction is Hangar 17 where you will be frantically demanded to ‘Move your asses!’ But no matter how fast you are moving, it still isn’t enough for these sadistic soldiers. The Cinema of Fears returns with a great addition this season with the downtown Atlanta and hospital scenes from the hit series ‘The Walking Dead!’ Returning favorites include scenes and characters from legendary movies such as Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, Saw, and many more that you’ll have to scream for yourself to find out! All sets and characters were in context with these two themes and left us with little doubt that Fear Fair is one of the best movie haunts that we have the privilege of attending!

Fright Effect: 9.1

Scares are delivered on many different levels at Fear Fair. From maniac soldiers pushing, pulling, yelling and cursing at you to creepy stares and pursuits from realistic movie characters, this haunt will try their hardest to dig down deep and find that one little thing that scares you even if it is breaking into your little personal-space bubble! They don’t just go for the front or back of the line either; each person will get their fair share of treatment from these freaks including Zee Doktor who has a very electrifying surprise for you! Distractions are easy to come by and are pretty effective when used. One of the most detrimental aspects that hurt Fear Factor’s score in this category was the shortage of actors at the time of our visit. This led to several dead spots throughout our tour of the complex and allowed us to make it through a handful of scenes without so much as a startle. However, as Halloween approaches, it’s likely that this haunt will have a much stronger cast in the upcoming weekends and allow for plenty of mind-boggling scares!

Value: 9.5

Fear Fair’s prices remain the same this season. General admission will cost you $15.00 while $5.00 more will gain you VIP fast pass tickets. Also this season, you can purchase general admission tickets with a t-shirt included for $25.00! This will save you $5.00 since t-shirts are normally $15.00 by themselves! Our review team took an estimated 30 minutes to complete our tour of Fear Fair which adds up to around 2 minutes of entertainment for every dollar spent. This makes Fear Fair one of the best deals in Indiana when combined with their legendary actors, characters, scenes and special effects!
