Team Zombillies reviewed this attraction on October 18, 2014.
Final Score: 9.1
The 2014 haunt season marks Asylum Haunted Scream Park’s 4th year in operation. AHSP offers 4 different attractions at one location for one competitive price! You can also purchase a separate VIP package that offers speed passes to each attraction and all sorts of other goodies in addition to access to shorter lines. The first attraction is the Carnivale of Lost Souls, which is a midway-style attraction with lots of games, photo ops, souvenir stands, and freak shows to keep you entertained during your visit. The Zombie City attraction continues the story involving the spread of the Pandora virus and attempts to contain it in Blackwood City in a comparatively less-scary, yet immersive and theatrical walkthrough. Darkness Falls on Asylum brings Asylum’s own twist of demented and diabolical characters to the table with some new-and-improved scenes and frights that you don’t want to miss! The fourth attraction, dubbed Xterminate: Zalien Attack, requires you and your team to “lock and load” with realistic weapons (paintball markers) to wipe out a warehouse full of zombie aliens before they break free and wipe out the world! Think you’ve got what it takes to experience Asylum Haunted Scream Park? Then make sure they’re on your list of must-see haunts in the Louisville area this season!
Zombie City: 9.4
Darkness Falls: 9
Well over 100 actors and actresses fill the attractions at AHSP on a typical night. On the night of our visit, Zombie City had the most interactive and believable characters. Some of the most exuberant and memorable include Lt. Commander Barnes, Dr. Yuri, Dr. Ryker, and his zombie. Displaying one of the most believable skits we’ve seen so far this season, Dr. Ryker and his zombie showed excellent usage of verbal interaction as we as actor-to-actor physical interaction by showing us how he could control the zombie’s brain! A few of the characters in Zombie City cleverly used Russian accents to enhance their believability even further and also to enhance their theme. One of the zombies single-handedly scared multiple people in our group multiple times, so watch out once you make it to the city! Even though some of the cast stood out to us more than others, each of them were “pieces to the puzzle” that successfully came together to create an interactive, haunted experience! In Darkness Falls, the mortician, Death himself, the voodoo woman, and the aggressive hillbilly in Shanty Town (a.k.a “Hepatitis Hogslaughter”) gave us some of the best performances. A wider variety of dialogue was used in Darkness, with some of the actors showing us displays of violence towards their victims and attempting to manipulate our thoughts with menacing threats! Each of the actors in the Xterminate attraction were very similar to one another, and is expected, considering they were all zombie-aliens. Most of them darted out from their hiding spots at different times with accompanying growls and screeches to help keep us on edge during our seek-and-destroy mission against them!
Zombie City: 9.88
Darkness Falls: 8.27
Along with the believable story and actors, Zombie City also had some of the best costumes in the complex. Some of the zombies appeared to be using distressed street clothes with some skin-rot makeup, but hey… they’re zombies! The military guys throughout ZC wore appropriate attire for their roles, as did Dr. Ryker who also had glowing veins when he walked past a black light in his lab, thus increasing his believability and that of the theme. Several of the costumes that we noticed in Darkness Falls were also authentic-looking, especially the ones worn by the hillbilly, cultists, the voodoo woman, the clowns, and the guy in the boiler room. Some of the actors were dressed a little more-so for scaring, but we’ll make you have to visit those guys face-to-face to find out who… or WHAT… they are! Xterminate’s “zombie-aliens” were dressed in tattered, worn out, street clothes, but it was harder to see their makeup details due to the low-lighting and the fact that we were more worried about shooting and killing them!
Zombie City: 9.75
Darkness Falls: 8.75
Customer Service: 9.65
Multiple signs and banners could be seen from the highway, letting us know we had arrived, and our group also noticed multiple billboard signs for this attraction along our route. They were extremely packed during our visit, but the parking attendants made sure they took care of everyone to the best of their abilities. This season AHSP added multiple entertaining (and free), custom photo opportunities, so be sure your group takes advantage of those! They also have a gift shop set up in the carnival area where you can purchase a variety of haunt memorabilia including t-shirts, bracelets, and more! A concession trailer was also conveniently located on premises. The Carnivale of Lost Souls offers humorous and fun, carnival style games for you to play or keep your children entertained if you decide to bring them. The Park joined forces with Blue Moon Circus this season, and they did a marvelous job at entertaining everyone in the queue lines. All of the lines centrally meet at a newly-built stage this season, making it possible for everyone to watch the performers, regardless of which haunt’s line you’re in! Several roaming actors, one with a loud horn, and another that appeared to be one of Slenderman’s minions did a great job at providing additional startles to innocent victims! Friendly staff members can be located at the entrance of each attraction and inside the ticket booth in case any questions or concerns arise.
The atmosphere at AHSP is very fun and instantly puts you in the mood to have a good time! The flame throwers, other skilled performers, and multiple carnival games around you make you feel like you truly are at a circus! Several roaming actors who were scaring innocent victims in the crowd increased our anticipation to enter the haunts, as well as the authentic décor accompanying the entrance of each attraction.
Special Effects: 8.7
The special effects that can be found at AHSP consists of items that have mostly been built in-house, but you will see some items that have been purchased as well. Sound effects, when encountered, were realistic-sounding and intensified the atmosphere in those areas. In Zombie City some of the effects you may come across include custom walkways, a boat, a “dynamite” surprise, a dilapidated city, a vicious dog, guns, tons of authentic décor, and running water in the sewer system! In Darkness Falls, you may find sliding floors, a shelf surprise, a unique light tunnel, barrels full of blood and body parts, a human-meat grinder, giant candy and cake, a boiler room, slides, and interesting, mutilated displays of previous victims! Xterminate is a bit different, as it’s an attraction where you’re paying attention to shooting Zaliens rather than what’s around you, but you WILL get to fire real paintball guns at them!
Zombie City: 9.15
Darkness Falls: 8.95
Each attraction at AHSP is based around a different theme. Zombie City revolves around a storyline that has been continued and changed from its debuting season! Don’t worry though; you can still enjoy the attraction even if you’ve never been through it before. Blackwood City has been overrun by military personnel and the Pandora virus. As soon as you step foot within the safest area of the attraction, you will become a major role in this interactive experience! Just hope that you don’t choose the “short straw!” Xterminate also has a storyline, but your main goal is to shoot and kill all of the Zaliens that you’ll come face-to-face with in an attempt to defeat the Queen. Darkness Falls is made up of many different fears, so you never know what you may run into! You’ll venture through a cemetery, Shanty Town, Hell’s Diner, a church, Lester’s Meat Processing, and much more! The Carnivale of Lost Souls provides entertainment throughout the park and consists of some very talented individuals who can’t wait to showcase their talents for you! A TV screen introduced the theme of Zombie City and Xterminate during our visit, so be sure to pay attention or you won’t know as much about why you’re doing what you’re doing!
Zombie City: 10
Darkness Falls: 9.25
Fright Effect: 8
Different levels of frights were used toward our group and varied per attraction. Zombie City is a theatrical and interactive haunt and is not meant to be the scariest on the premises. However, we still had some unexpected encounters, including having a gun pulled on us! One of our group members was exposed to the virus through the air and was also “injected” with it and had to face another gun towards the end of the journey! Darkness Falls is where the majority of the scares are delivered at AHSP. Some different types of scares that we encountered while making our way through the woods included several very good hiding spots, uneasy situations, a chainsaw attack, unexpected surprises from above, and we even witnessed several acts of violence and torture! Xterminate consists of shooting the Zaliens that will come after you, and the scariest part of that was the unknown direction from where they were going to come from… not to mention the thought of what would happen if we failed!
Zombie City: 7.8
Darkness Falls: 8.2
Regular, all-access passes to each of the 4 attractions can be purchased for $28.00 this season, which is a $7.00 price drop from last year! New this season is their VIP add-on for an additional $20.00 on top of the general admission price. This VIP package includes fast pass entry to each of the attractions PLUS an Asylum Haunted Scream Park t-shirt, coozie, lanyard, and a wristband! It took our group around 21 minutes to find our way to safety from Blackwood City, and another 27 minutes to complete our trek through the evil timbers of Darkness Falls. We also estimate that we spent 10 minutes killing off all the Zaliens in Xterminate, making this a combined total of almost 1 hour of entertainment! That puts this value at just over 2 minutes of entertainment per dollar spent! Your time spent inside each attraction may also vary per group. This is a great value, offering quite a bit of bang for your buck! If you’re looking for spooky entertainment with 4 differently-themed areas at one location, then be sure to check out Asylum Haunted Scream Park! Just remember, if you draw the short straw, you will become contagious and help spread the Pandora virus for them!
