Summary:
In Monessen’s hills, a castle stands,
Centuries-old, built with haunted hands.
A funeral home where whispers stay,
And wayward souls once found their way.
With hidden riches, ghosts untold,
The air is thick with stories old.
No clowns or chainsaws, blood or gore,
But magic, mystery, so much more.
Vampires stalk with eyes aglow,
In crimson halls, their hunger grows.
Werewolves howl beneath the night,
Their shadowed forms, a fearsome sight.
Witches weave their spells in air,
In Crow Haven’s eerie lair.
Each room a tale, a Gothic dream,
Where monsters guide you through the scheme.
Immersive, eerie, bold, and fun,
Castle Blood outshines each one.
In every shadow, you’ll find grace—
An unforgettable haunted space.
This year’s theme is “Perseverance,”
With vampires guiding through a dark experience.
They teach us that the journey holds the key,
More than the prize, it’s how we strive to be.

Cast Review:
Castle Blood never fails to bring a one-of-a-kind, talented cast that stands out every season. Unlike most haunts, the actors here don’t just jump in and out of scenes. Sure, you’ll get the occasional creature popping out of nowhere for a good jump scare, but these folks are all about face-to-face interactions—no hiding in the shadows. Each room has its own resident spirit, vampire, gypsy, witch, werewolf (I think that was a Cher song), or some other creepy character. This year, we came across about 20 of them in those cold stone walls. Every character is distinct, with their own unique personality, look, and role in the overall story. They either threw a game or a riddle at us to keep us moving in the right direction—or at least they tried to.
What makes it even better is that these actors aren’t just spitting out lines; they’re pros at improv, too. They have to be because, let’s face it, we’re a group of 20- to 40-year-old overgrown adolescents who love tossing out immature, inappropriate comments just to see if they can keep up. (Spoiler: They can.) And this year, they were pros at rolling with our nonsense, making the experience even more hilarious and personal.
We ran into some familiar faces this season, along with a few new ones. First up, as always, was Boris—the sarcastic, cranky vampire who’s clearly fed well, judging by his vest getting a little snugger each year. His hairline’s receding, too, but hey, that’s what happens when you’ve been stuck in a castle for centuries, right? Boris never fails to drag us in front of the crowd for some good old-fashioned humiliation, so here’s my chance to get even. In all seriousness, he’s got a tough job keeping everyone entertained, but he pulls it off with his signature “charm.” Then there’s Ezra, who, as always, laid out the rules and storyline for this year’s haunt, throwing in some good-natured jabs at us along the way.
Inside, we met Lady Die, a friendly demon who explained the plot and kicked things off with a trick. Loomis, the head butler, gave us some extra info and a token for later use. Speaking of head, Anatoli gave us head in the den after we solved a horror movie word game, as well as advice on how to use the head in the future. The mystical gypsy gave us a tarot reading, handing over a black heart to guide us.
In the lab, Professor Belfrey, a quirky scientist with boundless energy, had us try another puzzle, but of course, we failed—too busy laughing at electrocuting our friend. He was a riot before sending us off to the crypt, where we met Morgana, a fierce vampire vixen who made it clear she wanted our heart on… her altar, no questions asked. She was sharp-tongued and quick-witted, no-nonsense. With her thick accent, Madame Nightshade returned to her cryptozoology room, gave us wood, and had us compare the sizes of each others. She made sure to mock us, leaving us feeling hilariously inadequate.
Hexeva was back in Crow Haven, full of witchy energy, guiding us through our final puzzle. And finally, Madame Luara was our judge, giving us a surprisingly positive message despite our many failures.
We also met some new faces—or new to us, anyway, since Castle Blood rotates its cast. Vavara, a secluded siren with a smooth, sultry voice, whispered about “special protection” (no, not that kind) from things lurking in the dark. When she asked if we understood, I couldn’t resist: “Herpes?” I joked. Without missing a beat, she shot back, “That’s quite the pervasive spirit… one of the oldest hauntings we know of,” but assured us she meant something more immediate. After a quick game, she sent us on our way. In the viewing room, Astrid gave us a fun auditory game to move the plot along. Josetta, in the cemetery, was there to remind us of all our failures, just like my parents.
As always, the cast was stellar, making this interactive journey a total blast.

Costuming Review:
To bring their characters to life, Castle Blood outfits each actor in meticulously crafted, high-quality costumes that reflect the Gothic theme running through the attraction. The attire—whether suits, dresses, or layered ensembles—is custom-made, designed to fit the period, and far beyond your average Halloween costume. Dark colors like blacks, reds, purples, and blues dominate, giving the actors a formal, eerie elegance. Masks and makeup are seamlessly integrated, with designer masks matching certain costumes and makeup applied professionally, adding to the realism. This isn’t just ghostly face paint, but detailed, airbrushed effects that give the actors a cadaver-like appearance, neither fully alive nor fully dead.
Each costume is designed with intricate layers and details, from headpieces and jewels to overcoats and top hats, matching the Gothic chic style of the 1500s. The costumes must impress because the well-lit manor puts everything on display, with actors often standing close to guests. Even the more fantastical characters, like the mad scientist, vampires, gypsies, and witches, are outfitted in custom creations that include prosthetics, pointy ears, and elaborate masks. These costumes, paired with the spectral makeup, add depth and authenticity to the characters, enhancing the overall immersive experience.

Immersion Review:
From the moment you arrive, special effects whisk you into the supernatural, with stone columns, gargoyles, and jack-o’-lanterns bathed in orange, purple, green, and blue light, creating a classic Halloween vibe while the haunting score of Midnight Syndicate fills the air. It feels like it belongs atop a hill with lightning flashing behind it and bats fly out of its windows.
While waiting, we encountered Boris, who entertained guests with his horrendous accent and snarky comments—he’s a true gem each season. His quick wit had us in stitches, especially when he poked fun at our group. Once past Boris, we met Ezra, who explained the rules and theme more seriously, preparing us for the journey ahead.
Inside, the immersion deepens. Each room, once part of the funeral parlor, is expertly designed, leaving no space unused. Whether you are in the pensive parlor, the logical lab, or the kookie cryptospookology museum, every corner of the Castle showcases its unique inhabitants. The trophy room boasts taxidermy, weapons, and Macabre family treasures, while the lab showcases a steampunk vibe. The haunt “slays” with an eerie atmosphere.
Transitions between rooms are smooth, with surprises lurking around every corner. Encounters with fortune tellers, vampires, witches, and scientists enhance the authenticity of the experience, making every moment feel alive. Even the gift shop maintains the eerie ambiance, ensuring the spectral experience lingers.
This year’s theme is “Perseverance.” Vampires, with their centuries of experience, know that the journey matters more than the destination. The tour focuses on the power of collaboration and tenacity, reminding us that it’s not about winning, but rather how you play the game—and the enjoyment you find in the process, and of course there is a lesson to learn.
In short, the immersion at Castle Blood is remarkable. From the intricate details and engaging storyline to the seamless transitions, it’s a Halloween adventure that feels both authentic and exhilarating. The classic gothic theme flows effortlessly from room to room, and even the descent to the crypt feels natural. This hundred-year-old house, with its antique architecture, evokes the charm of classic horror films, creating a haunting yet nostalgic atmosphere.

Special FX Review:
The Castle is a definitive haunted house embodying everything old-school horror should be. Drawing inspiration from decades of classic films and shows such as The Munsters, Dark Shadows, The Addams Family, Castle Blood features a cohesive layout where each room, though uniquely themed, contributes to a unified atmosphere you would expect to find in a haunted house. The parlor, with its somber red walls and ornate wallpaper, extends into the halls, adorned with creepy pictures that create a lived-in feel. Statues, flickering candles, and endless details demand attention, making it impossible to absorb everything even after hours of exploration.
The lab exudes a chilling vibe with its metal pipes, glowing beakers, and shelves of body parts, while the crypt below is darker, featuring stone walls draped in skulls and eerie archways that enhance the cinematic experience. Not to mention the “Museum of Cryptospookology” glowing with mystery, the outdoor cemetery showcasing imposing monuments, and the pumpkin area illuminated by numerous jack-o’-lanterns.
The upstairs den features two new statues depicting fire and ice; speaking of cold, the damp crypt is lined with stone statues that give a sense of being watched. Outside, the cemetery feels authentic, with tombs that could have stepped straight from a classic horror film.
Lighting plays a crucial role, casting varied moods across the haunt, while the sound design enriches the experience with thematic audio in every space. With around 15 distinct areas, there’s no filler; the crypt brims with props, animatronics, and surprises that keep you engaged.
Castle Blood transports you into a realm reminiscent of The Munsters or The Addams Family, only better—this is no mere set; it’s a Halloween enthusiast’s dream. It’s not perfect, but it’s a love letter to classic horror from the ’50s to the ’70s, with no gore, just pure spookiness. The house is alive with nostalgia, filled with trinkets like skulls, creepy portraits, and hidden doors.
Music and ambient sounds amplify the atmosphere. The crypt resonates with chilling tunes and whispers, while even the outdoors is alive with the sounds of nature, enhancing the eerie ambiance. Madam Nightshade’s room perfectly aligns with haunting melodies, while the Mad Scientist’s office features flickering lights and the sounds of electrocution.
Castle Blood masterfully blends lifelike designs, thematic sounds, and innovative effects to forge an unparalleled haunted experience. Every detail is thoughtfully curated, weaving together a symphony of chilling sensations that will both captivate and terrify you.

Scare Factor Review:
Castle Blood excels in nearly every aspect of a haunted attraction but falls short on the scare factor. Surprisingly Castle Blood has very little blood, no chainsaws or clowns, and that’s ok. This helps it stand apart from traditional haunts. This isn’t about being the scariest; it’s about creating a good time for everyone, making it a fantastic introductory haunt for younger kids—though there are a few jump scares. The venue’s brightness allows for appreciation of the actors, décor, and meticulous details in each room while working through the puzzles and story.
Castle Blood isn’t scare-free it does rely on scare actors and props to deliver surprising jump scares, especially in the 2nd half of the tour. The haunt wraps up with a theatrical celebration; a judge evaluates if visitors pass their tests to become honorary vampires. While Castle Blood may not deliver the most intense scares, its innovative blend of classic jump scares, sensory effects, and engaging theatrics creates a memorable Halloween experience that resonates with enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

E&V Review:
I got to say, we’ve yet to have a bad time at Castle Blood. From the second you roll up to the moment you step out through the gift shop, it’s just a solid experience all around. Tickets run you $25, and it took us about an hour to get through, which, if you’re doing the math, breaks down to a killer 2.4 minutes per dollar. That’s basically double what you’d get at your average haunt.
Castle Blood checks almost every box for an amazing haunt. It showcases amazing actors, an awesome atmosphere, and an intricate interactive experience. We would like to see a few more scares, but then again, you can get screamed at at any haunt around, so maybe things are perfect the way they are.
It’s not just winning that sets the aim, but joy in the journey that fuels the flame.
