Metal music blares through the air for miles, flames shoot 50 feet into the night sky, and the roar of chainsaws echoes along the road. This can only mean one thing: we’re either caught in a Rob Zombie film or getting close to Wells Township Haunted House. Nestled in Brilliant, Ohio, this intense and unique haunt keeps us coming back year after year.

Wells Township Haunted House sticks to its tried-and-true formula of guided tours, a rarity in today’s haunt scene. Yet, each season, they deliver fresh, original content that keeps the experience exciting and unpredictable for every visitor.

Cast Review:

This year, the house had 30 tortured souls—slightly fewer than last season, but it worked well. More actors are always a bonus, but sometimes less is more, and this year felt like the perfect balance. Every one of those 30 actors was fully committed to their roles.

A few queue actors were sprinkled in, and at one point, our guides worked in some impromptu workouts with a massive axe before leading us into the chaos. We couldn’t help but notice a pair of chainsaw-wielding maniacs, who seemed to have a special focus on guests who were a little more… sensitive to those kinds of things.

On top of all that, actors got in our faces, and even encouraged us to scream back. They were a diverse group, perfectly matched to the scenes they were in, and the haunt did a solid job of hitting all major fears. Each section felt organized, with characters spread out in a way that kept everything fresh and scary as we moved through the different areas.

Costuming Review:

This years costuming was on point, and showed in our ratings. Most actors were decked out in makeup, with a good mix of masks scattered in. The lead characters were given more attention in the makeup department, while the jump scare or supporting actors rocked some pretty cool costumes—like the scarecrows lurking in the cornfield, the demons in the operating room, and “b-sack-head Jason” who busted through the cabin door.

Every single character, from top to bottom, was dressed to impress, whether in makeup or full costume, which made the whole experience that much better. Also, no clowns this year! Honestly, this is a win in our book since the clown bit is starting to feel a little played out.

As for the line actors in the queue, they had an awesome variety of characters and behaviors. We got everything from chainsaw maniacs to a confused grandpa who wandered into traffic after having an accident. The whole thing meshed perfectly with our two guides. Not only were the costumes top-tier, but the actors themselves were having a blast playing their parts. Except maybe Hitler, who wore a dress, with a pineapple waiting for him… an easily missed reference to “Little Nicky.”

Customer Service Review:

Wells Township Haunted House was a breeze to find using Google Maps or GPS, though parking can be a bit tricky since this place gets packed. There’s a lot onsite, but there’s also plenty of street parking down the road, which wasn’t too busy when we arrived! The ticket booth is easy to spot, and tickets are also available online for convenience. They had two officers onsite the night we went, so security was covered.

As for the haunt itself, there was nothing dangerous about it. The guides did a solid job stressing the importance of communicating if there were steps or anything hazardous along the way. They emphasized helping everyone navigate the slide section, making sure people got down and back up safely.

The staff was top-notch, from the ticket booth to management, and even the food stand workers were friendly and helpful. Everything ran smoothly, and the whole operation felt well-organized.

Wells Township has a website where you can find everything you need—additional info, the address, operating hours, and the option to snag your tickets in advance. Super handy!

Immersion Review:

The pre-haunt areas at Wells Township set the stage for an epic night from the get-go. They had three bonfires blazing, a projector playing scary movies and music videos, and even a live band. Seriously, what more could you want? This year, they upped the game with food trucks. The whole vibe felt like a wild party, keeping everyone entertained and pumped up before the haunt began.

The storyline is provided by the skeleton crypt keeper, or I guess the soul of the house, as he warns that the path ahead will be filled with torment, and he wasn’t kidding!

The trek takes you through a string of sinister scenes—kids creeping from a well, conjuring “The Ring” vibes, a devilish demon-drenched surgery room, a chillingly chaotic asylum, a shadowy swamp, a cornfield crawling with creeps, a camp counselor’s cursed cabin, deranged doctor’s demented experiments, a vile vampire’s lair, a grim and ghastly visit to grandma’s house, and, finally, stumbling into an exorcism entirely gone awry. It’s one messed-up ride, and it’s easy to see why heads were spinning by the end.

The immersion was constant with actors and guides adding a sense of chaos, rushing us from scene to scene, yelling for us to move faster, and making everything feel like a fire drill. The chaos cleverly tied together random scenes, giving them a purpose and helping the overall flow of the haunt feel more connected.

Surprisingly, the transitions between scenes felt smooth even though disjointed, and the fast pace does not give time for haunt goers to catch their bearings between frights. The urgency helped blend a wide range of fears, with related scenes.

For instance, the surgery room and the insane asylum fit the twisted medical theme, keeping that creepy vibe consistent. And the flow from the cornfield into the camp counselor’s cabin worked too—the counselor even referenced the cornfield, making it feel like they were part of the same eerie area.

Another smooth transition was between Grandma’s house and the exorcism room, making it feel like they were all in the same haunted home. There were some wild, more random scenes—like kids climbing out of a well, a mad scientist animatronic working on a creature behind bars, and the vampire lair—but they worked to shake things up.

These moments, combined with the guides urging us along, felt like palate cleansers between all the madness, keeping us on our toes and making it hard to predict what was coming next. Some physical scenes, like the unstable wooden bridges in the swamp, the vortex tunnel, and the slide, added a whole new layer of disorientation.

The slide, by the way, was a fan favorite. And one cool detail—they swapped out the classic Donkey Kong “Mario’s grave” scene this year. In its place, there’s now a cabin setting with banjos playing, right before Grandpa’s house. They kept the rolling barrels, which was a nice nod to the original. The change made sense, as the Donkey Kong room might’ve felt out of place with the rest of this years more cohesive aesthetic.

All-in-all, Wells Township nailed it again, blending chaos, creativity, and a well-thought-out flow that hit all the right marks.

Special FX Review:

As always, the special effects truly sealed the deal and brought the whole experience together seamlessly. As we have said before, the house feels alive because of the combination of lights, sounds, and physical elements elevating the attraction. What makes this haunt stand out is its ability to focus on very specific scenes, making everything feel more intentional and cohesive.

Each scene had its soundtrack, packed with appropriate details. A few moments stood out, like a demonic narrator during the cornfield sequence, ominously warning about voices and scarecrows. The actors themselves seemed on edge, uneasy as the scarecrows eventually launched their attack.

There was also a clever sense of humor sprinkled into the mix. Poking some nostalgic fun, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” played in the background of the camp counselor’s room and mixed well with the 80s memorabilia on the walls like we were in Friday the 13th, part two. Another humorous scene at Grandpa’s house, was “The Price Is Right” on TV, and Grandpa quipped about how obsessed Grandma was with the show. The sound effects, ranging from in-your-face to more subtle, worked wonders to separate scenes and hold our attention.

The set design was incredibly detailed, with practically zero dead space. Wells Township Haunted House makes the most of every square inch. Whether it’s a dirty diaper on the floor, skulls adorning the walls, or cobwebs hanging in the corners: they didn’t leave a single detail untouched!

Visually, the haunt excelled with its use of synchronized lights, fog machines, dynamic shifts like going up and down stairs, and, of course, the infamous slides. The only thing missing was the sense of smell, which could be an interesting element to incorporate in the future as a potential improvement. Otherwise, all other senses were triggered in some way.

Our favorite sound effects had to be the death whistle the scarecrows used and the queen’s voice in the 2nd finale.

Scare Factor Review:

When we think of Wells Township Haunted House, we immediately think of one of the most intense, pulse-pounding haunted experiences out there. It delivers a wide range of scares that tap into your deepest, darkest fears.

What sets this haunt apart is how well it targets multiple phobias, weaving in a variety of scares—all with a central theme of pandemonium. Each scene builds the tension, with music that either ramps up or cuts out entirely for dramatic effect. The unpredictability is key, and the guides keep the flow seamless while props add an extra layer, digging into specific fears.

The scares had us on edge the whole time, which boosted the scare factor in our overall rating. The actors did an excellent job engaging with us directly, making us feel like part of the scene. They would ask questions, make taunting comments, and even invite us into the action, which made everything more personal and unsettling.

The scares weren’t always predictable, either. Even the animatronics caught a few of us off guard—whether it was air guns, loud noises, or surprise props. And if you think you know what’s coming, guess again—our favorite part was the rolling barrels that drop down from above. This place is packed with unexpected twists!

The finale was hands down one of the best we’ve seen this season. A common critique we have for most haunts is that they don’t put enough effort into the final moments, but Wells Township crushed it by offering not just one, but two different finales, and both were unique and intense. One ending builds anxiety as the actor’s panic escalates until the maniac arrives. The other takes a more cerebral approach, hypnotizing you with a narrative, lulling you into a false sense of security before BAM—a maniac with a chainsaw jolts you back to reality! Both finales delivered a satisfying, adrenaline-pumping finish to an already stellar haunted experience!
