Summary:
Woods of Terror, located at McLaurin Farms in Greensboro, North Carolina, has been delivering frights for 33 years, and 2024 brings even more thrills to their 16 scenes of horror. New this year is “Fungus Amungus,” and we were fortunate to get a sneak peek of their upcoming “Baba Yaga” scene, set to open the first weekend of October. This highly detailed and immersive witchcraft attraction is shaping up to be their scariest scene yet.
Beyond the haunt, Woods of Terror offers one of the best midways we’ve ever experienced. Monsters roam freely, engaging with guests in top-notch performances, while visitors can enjoy axe throwing, two gift shops, and a thrilling Hellavator ride. The night comes alive with a live rock band called “Crypt Kicker”, and a DJ keeping the dance floor packed during breaks. With so much to do, Woods of Terror is a destination where the scares don’t stop!

Cast Review:
The Midway cast was incredibly entertaining and an absolute blast to interact with before we entered the haunt. Clowns, monsters, witches, and more danced to the music blasting over the PA system, all while keeping the energy alive with witty banter and playful antics. These characters are some of the best we’ve encountered at a haunt.
Inside the attraction, the cast varied in their approach. Some performers fully engaged with us, bringing the rooms to life with interactive moments, while others stayed hidden in the shadows, adding an air of mystery. While this added suspense, we did find ourselves wishing a few more had stepped into the spotlight to interact with us directly. Nonetheless, there were standout performances that truly elevated the overall experience. From the engaging mortuary lady, who even requested a sample of Faith’s lovely red hair, to the chatty and not-so-friendly Doctor Malice in the cremation room and the witchy ghost-like figure in the church dancing gleefully amongst the stench of death, there were definitely some unique and memorable characters.
The highlight of the night was the chilling performance of Michael Myers and his victim, who delivered a physically intense and unforgettable scene that we hadn’t witnessed in any other haunted house before. The pirates, too, added a touch of liveliness to the experience with their chatty and engaging personalities.

Costuming Review:
Woods of Terror really delivered with their costumes, making the entire experience feel intense. The menacing clowns, with their creepy grins and colorful hair, had a knack for sneaking up on you with a scream or a loud horn when you least expected it. Then there were the sisters, casually munching on rats that had escaped from a sewer—it was both disgusting and disturbing! The pirates looked so real that they could have walked straight off the set of a Pirates of the Caribbean movie alongside Jack Sparrow. And those voodoo characters? They looked like they had just come out of the bayous of Louisiana. Even the Ronald McDonald clown had a distressed and demonic vibe. I also appreciated how the actors in masks took the time to hide the edges and used blackout around their eyes—those little details really added to the realism. Overall, the costumes were beautifully crafted and really enhanced the atmosphere of the haunt.

Immersion Review:
We’ve been to a lot of haunts over the years, and some of our favorites greet you with a wide-open monster party atmosphere. Woods of Terror throws a monster party like no other. When we walked in, there was a rock band of ghouls onstage that broke into Metallica’s Sad But True just as we walked through the gates. We were promptly greeted by some ghastly characters. Uncle Tommy reminded us of Chop Top (Texas Chainsaw) and Otis Firefly (Devil’s Rejects) brandishing a blade with some looks that he wanted to eviscerate both of us. We were greeted by so many colorful characters, from intimidating clowns and rat-eating sisters to a diner waitress who had apparently stopped putting up with unruly customers years ago and just started beheading anyone who complained about the service. There was also this pirate guy that goes by the name “Dutchy” running around the haunt, entertaining everyone with his trickery. As we all know, pirates love their mischief. Last but certainly not least is the red mohawk having, bone-painted leather jacket wearing, lurking in his big black boots, carrying an albino python around his neck, master of mojo, conductor of ceremonies, and monster parade captain, BONE DADDY!! You can’t miss that ghoul, and you don’t want to because he is happy to entertain, take pictures, and welcome you to his haunted world with all his friends in tow.
Now, it’s time to take a stroll through the woods. Woods of Terror has assembled some of the best haunted architecture of any haunt that we’ve been to. The Fungus Among Us will make your skin crawl and have you looking over your shoulder. Eleven’s Nightmare will pull you headfirst into your favorite TV series brought to life. The Mortuary and Necropolis were unbelievably eerie. There are so many areas that you get to explore, and anyone headed there this coming weekend and the rest of haunt season will get to also visit the Baba Yaga. It wasn’t available when we visited due to an inspection that was going to be completed a few days later. We did get a daylight tour, and it was unreal how much detail they put into it. When the rooms are put together this well, it can pull you into the scenes mentally, and when they flow together from one to the next as well as they do, you feel as if you’re in another world. This attraction has thousands of visitors nightly, and sometimes, that creates backups in the haunt. You may end up in a group with other haunt fans, but then again, there’s strength in numbers, so it increases your chances of escaping with your soul intact.

Special FX Review:
The special effects at Woods of Terror are nothing short of impressive, adding layers of immersion that elevate the entire experience. As you navigate through scenes, you’re greeted by hissing air, thick fog, and creative touches like glowing fungus hives and eerie glow paint that bring the world of the haunt to life. The attention to detail is stunning, from shocking walls and animatronic creatures like a massive snake, an alligator, and a menacing fly trap to corpses strapped to walls with tubes running through them, creating a truly disturbing atmosphere. The sensory experience doesn’t stop there—scenes like Clowntown fill the air with sweet cotton candy smells while popcorn lingers in the cinema. The Bayou, with its authentic skunk stink and intricate decorations, makes you feel like you’re truly in a swamp. A glowing Demogorgon and perfectly timed sound effects keep the tension high, with no “dead air” in any part of the haunt. For a wild, disorienting experience, the pirate boat and its moving platform are a standout—you better hold on tight!

Scare Factor Review:
Woods of Terror offers a fun haunted house experience that’s great for teens and adults alike. The scares are present, featuring unexpected encounters and shadowy figures around every corner, creating an exciting atmosphere. You’ll find jump scares that might catch you off guard, along with some gory moments that add to the thrill. The mortuary/church, with the witch in the pulpit, was particularly creepy, and the sight of beaten cheerleaders chained up and awaiting sacrifice were pretty horrifying. Distant screams contributed to the overall ambiance, enhancing the sense of suspense. If you’re looking for an enjoyable and memorable haunted house experience, Woods of Terror is definitely worth checking out!
