Final Score: 9.37

The minds behind Dread Hollow have been haunting Chattanooga for 22 years now. Originally known for running the Haunted Cavern at Ruby Falls, this marks their eighth year operating at the Browns Ferry Village shopping center. The attraction continues its tradition of offering special discounted nights such as College Night, Girls’ Night Out, Date Night, and the ever-popular Blackout Night.

This season, the storyline of Dread Hollow evolves with three new chapters: The Belle Royal Hotel, Dreadwood Forest, and Dread Hollow High School – The Reckoning. Guests embark on a continuous walk-through experience that seamlessly connects these three distinctive sections, along with the immersive Main Street queue area.

New this year, Dread Hollow has reintroduced the R.I.P. ticket option, which grants access to a private control room where guests can trigger scares and watch unsuspecting visitors react in real-time, a wickedly fun interactive upgrade.

In addition to the haunted attraction, Dread Hollow operates three 30-minute escape rooms, each themed to tie into the haunt’s overarching story. Reservations are strongly recommended for those planning to make an escape room part of their eerie evening.

Dread Hollow features a lineup of original characters brought to life by a dedicated cast. The performers are deeply committed to creating an eerie, immersive, and entertaining experience for every guest. Many have portrayed their particular roles for several years, refining each character’s quirks and mannerisms along the way. Throughout the night, the cast remained completely in character, eager to interact with guests and draw them further into the twisted world of Dread Hollow.

We encountered a wide range of approaches to scares and interaction styles. Some characters were loud, unpredictable, and talkative, while others relied on silence and presence to build tension.

On Main Street, Rusty McCracken returned, wielding the world’s nastiest plunger with unsettling pride. Elias Vane was particularly unnerving as he beckoned us toward the crematorium, suggesting we “experience the fire” for ourselves. Inside the speakeasy experience, Muffy was both playful and peculiar as she guided us through triggering scares on unsuspecting guests.

Among the quieter but equally effective performers, the paracorpses startled us repeatedly with their unearthly sounds as we passed through the graveyard and crematorium. Meanwhile, the ominous Dregg, cloaked in darkness and wearing plague doctor masks, simply stood and pointed as we made our way through their domain. Were they pointing out the way to continue on, or indicating that we were next??

8. How believable-, detailed-looking were the queue actors? (See Note if N/A) (15% of score): 9.5

The costuming and makeup at Dread Hollow feature unique designs tailored to match both the environment and the personality of each character. Masks appear to be custom-made or adapted creations, designed specifically for the characters who need them, and they serve to enhance rather than conceal each performer’s expression. Distinctive makeup treatments make it easy to distinguish one character from another while allowing actors the freedom to contort their faces and use expression to intensify their interactions.

The costumes themselves are appropriately distressed and grimy, blending seamlessly with the gritty atmosphere of the sets. Nothing looks pristine or untouched by the corruption of this town. The clothing of its inhabitants clearly reflects the darkness and evil deeds that define Dread Hollow.

Entering the hotel elevator we noted the bellhop, whose ghostly makeup made him look as though he’d been trapped between the living and the dead. The Dregg, with their plague doctor masks and flowing black robes, fit hauntingly well within the cemetery area, along with their silent gestures creating a distinctly ominous vibe. And our brief encounter with Grimsby, the blood-splattered clown armed with a hatchet proved that even quick appearances can leave a memorable impression.

Dread Hollow’s website is impressively thorough, providing all the key information you need before your visit, including dates and times of operation, ticket options, haunt and escape room descriptions, and location details. It also features photos and bios of several key characters, allowing dedicated haunt enthusiasts to get to know the eerie residents of Dread Hollow by name before ever setting foot inside.

The R.I.P. ticket upgrade includes access to the R.I.P. Lounge, where you can help administer scares to unsuspecting visitors passing through the haunt.

Porta Potties are available near the exit, and the merchandise area offers a good selection of T-shirts, along with water, soda, energy drinks, and candy bars for those needing a quick refresh.

Throughout our visit, the staff were attentive and efficient, answering questions promptly and keeping guests moving smoothly through each section. The Dread Hollow crew’s commitment to both frights and fun is evident from start to finish.

13. How well did the pre-haunt areas ("vibe") prepare you for the attraction/s? (25% of score): 9

14. How obvious, creative, believable was the storyline? (See Note if N/A) (20% of score): 9.4

15. Were you completely, consistently immersed inside the attraction/s? (40% of score): 9.3

16. How well did the "vibe" flow after, between the attraction/s? (15% of score): 9

The Dread Hollow website also provides a history of the attraction along with a synopsis of the original characters you’re likely to encounter during your visit. Guests who want to make their experience even more immersive can read up on the current storyline and cast of characters ahead of time, but doing your homework isn’t required to catch the creepy vibe or enjoy an evening packed with scares.

The Main Street queue serves as a great introduction to the town of Dread Hollow. Here, various townsfolk pop out to surprise guests, often referencing one another in their conversations. Once inside the haunt, actors continue this pattern, weaving in mentions of other residents and giving the impression that everyone in this twisted town knows each other. This continuity helps make the storyline feel cohesive and believable.

Throughout the attraction, lighting, sound, and water effects work together to simulate an eerie outdoor environment. You’ll hear crickets, frogs, and rolling thunder, while fog, mist, and even light rain effects enhance the realism. Dread Hollow doesn’t shy away from using water. Expect to encounter small puddles, sprays from animatronics, and damp, stormy scenes that draw you deeper into the atmosphere.

Special Effects: 9.29

17. How effective were the sound effects? (20% of score): 9.3

18. How realistic were the scene designs, details? (30% of score): 9.2

19. How effective, realistic were the props, animatronics? (30% of score): 9.3

20. How well did they use creative, special, sensory effects? (20% of score): 9.4

Dread Hollow uses special effects to effectively enhance its scenes and draw guests deeper into the town’s dark realm. One standout feature is the chest-high laser swamp room, where thick fog and glowing green lasers create the illusion of wading through murky, illuminated water. The effect not only immerses visitors in the eerie environment but also gives the lurking actor plenty of opportunities to deliver a perfectly timed scare.

The swirling laser fog tunnel, a less-frequently used effect, was another highlight. As we made our way through the spinning light and dense mist, it produced a genuine sense of tunnel vision and disorientation, amplifying the tension of the moment.

Lighting effects were also used strategically throughout. In several scenes, your eyes are allowed to adjust to near-total darkness before being hit with a sudden burst of light from a sparker wand or other bright source. That brief distraction often sets up a surprise actor scare, catching guests completely off guard.

Dread Hollow goes beyond visual and auditory elements by engaging all the senses. Foul, lingering odors in select areas heighten the atmosphere of decay and dread, while subtle layers of ambient outdoor sound such as croaking frogs, chirping crickets, and distant thunder further sell the illusion of being outdoors. Add in fog and mist effects, and you can almost feel the damp air and the urge to escape the elements.

The Scare Factor: 9.26

21. How scary was it? (35% of score): 9.4

22. How well did they provide scares to everyone in the group? (15% of score): 9.4

23. How predictable were the scares? (25% of score): 9.3

24. How well did they provide a wide variety (types) of scares? (10% of score): 9.1

25. How strong was the ending / finale? (15% of score): 8.8

Dread Hollow delivers a wide range of scares that catch guests off guard. There are numerous effective jump scares, many striking from the side or behind, and a few that sneak up from down low. While this year didn’t leave us completely wondering where a couple of those actors appeared from, the timing and execution still managed to catch us off guard many times.

A particularly memorable moment came with the trellis scare (and yes, not a lattice, as we were humorously corrected). This pop-out was both surprising and entertaining, leading to a lighthearted exchange with the actor that stood out in the mix of frights.

Throughout the attraction, Dread Hollow makes smart use of illusion and uncertainty, placing figures in shadow so guests can’t tell if they’re actors or props. This classic tactic keeps everyone second-guessing, unsure where the next startle will come from.

Scares also extend to the senses. Scene-appropriate foul smells heighten the realism of decay or filth, sometimes subtle, sometimes strong enough to make you want to move on to the next room quickly!

The haunt also uses intimidation effectively. Encounters with a few larger-than-life monsters make you feel small as you escape their giant grasp. The silent stalking presence of Dregg creates a different kind of tension. The lack of dialogue or noise from these characters makes their appearances feel even more ominous, leaving guests to wonder what is their motivation? Why are they interested in us?.

Finally, Dread Hollow manages several well-executed distraction scares, with actors using timing and lighting to take guests by surprise. One example involved a bright flash on an animatronic that momentarily disoriented us, only for a live actor to follow up with the real scare. This was a clever and well-coordinated one-two punch.

Entertainment & Value: 9.38

26. How satisfied with the entertainment provided by the MAIN attraction/s? (50% of score): 9.5

27. How satisfied with OTHER entertainment INCLUDED with the ticket price? (25% of score): 9

28. How appropriate is/are the ticket price/s? (25% of score): 9.5

General admission tickets were priced at $25, and our walkthrough time was 22 minutes. This gives Dread Hollow a minute-per-dollar (MPD) value of 0.88, which is very reasonable compared to other haunts we’ve experienced.

In addition to the main attraction, there are several photo opportunities throughout the Main Street area. The queue actors stationed there are interactive, entertaining, and often happy to jump into photos with guests, adding an extra layer of fun before the scares begin.

For those interested in a behind-the-scenes experience, the R.I.P. ticket is worth the additional $10. This upgrade grants entry into Muffy’s Speakeasy, a dimly lit and creatively themed lounge hosted by some of Dread Hollow’s more unsettling residents. Inside, “scaracters” will show you how to trigger four different scares within the haunt. Watching groups react to your perfectly timed air blasts from this eerie hideaway makes for a uniquely entertaining twist to your visit.
