Fog rolled over the hills of Kentucky like a slow-creeping blanket, smothering the fields in silence… Until a faint light flickered in the distance. Then came the sound – screaming. That couldn’t be coming from that old white barn… could it? Oh, but it was, along with a chorus of disturbing noises and even more unsettling smells. Whatever was going on inside that barn, we were about to find out.

If you’re hunting for the freshest cuts of meat in the Bluegrass State, look no further than Red Orchard Park, home of Black Orchard Meats. But beware: the family behind the madness, the Blacks, have their own way of luring in dinner guests… And we don’t mean for supper, they are the supper!

This year, Bray the Butcher returned, sharper than ever, joined by a cast of twisted and demented aggressors all dying to mea… er, meet you! Black Orchard delivered one of the most intense experiences of our entire season, earning a significant score increase from their 2024 review! We came running out of the exit, completely out of breath!

And as for that sticky substance smeared all over us? We’re not sure what it is… But whatever it was, we’re pretty sure you need it all over you, too!

Bray the Butcher discovered us on his property not long into our trek towards the barn. He was very welcoming- almost suspiciously so- as he brought us in, allowing us to warm up by the fire while he explained that Atticus was dead, and he now ran operations at Black Orchard Meats. Oh, but they aren’t just harvesting meat now… they’re harvesting fear, and with every scream and jump, we were feeding that barn. We had a feeling he wasn’t one to be trusted – there was evil in that man’s eyes.

If only the rest of his freakish family had been as kind from the start… a lot of them were prowling around outside, and they sure seemed hungry! Dirty hillbillies and half-animal monsters were all over our group, inspecting us, coming after us with chainsaws, and soundly harassing every single person until we managed to fight our way to the front door of the family business. At least not all of them wanted to eat us – we had a bunny who wanted to feed us “carrots”, which turned out to be actual beef jerky. Well, we hope it was beef. Once we were inside, we were greeted by Mama. Wielding a riding crop to keep her new guests in line, she told us where they sourced the fine cuts of meat they had on offer – and that crop ended up meeting a group member’s backside before she was done! (As for that meat… let’s just say not everyone who finds their way here gets to leave.) As soon as we left the meat shop, it was a battle to survive the slaughterhouse and escape – a feat none of them made easy. Some wanted to carve us up for dinner, which was to be expected, while others didn’t think we were well-fed enough and kept offering us severed limbs, intestines, and other grotesque goodies to munch on. The rest came after our group at every turn, throwing out threats and taunts. We did have a few interactions that were a little more lighthearted to break up the mayhem: one lovely lady measured our bodies and inspected our skin for signs of dryness and recommended what appeared to be rendered fat (eww!) as lotion. A young girl also allowed all of us to give her cute cow doll a hug.

The muscle of the Black family had to be the chainsaws. They were everywhere, attacking us at multiple points throughout the haunt. Near the end, an entire pack of them pounced on our whole group and about ran us ragged. We didn’t know where to turn or what to do! It was wild!

Just about everyone on Black Orchard’s cast was highly interactive; most heavily with us, but we also saw a good amount of interaction with the props in their sets and each other. Some of us were singled out and made to lie on tables to be inspected as meat, threatened with a hand being chopped off, and one scene rearranged our positions in the group! Actors were nearly everywhere, and we didn’t see many spots that could’ve used more. Their energy was insane, and we frequently got mobbed or had our personal space thoroughly invaded. Good luck getting out of here alive!

Costuming: 9.31

5. How complete, unique, detailed were the costumes, accessories? (35% of score): 9.08

6. Were the masks, makeup creative, detailed, realistic? (30% of score): 9.33

7. How appropriate were the costumes for the respective scenes, themes? (20% of score): 9.75

8. How believable-, detailed-looking were the queue actors? (See Note if N/A) (15% of score): 9.25

Bray “is the way” certainly dressed for the role of his proclaimed takeover, with chrome skulls on his black cowboy hat, and silver skulls on his leather vest; the airbrushed makeup (or blood?) detail up his arms, body, and over his face sent a shiver down our spine, along with his wild bright contacts, highlighting his intense, evil stare.

The masks on actors throughout the entire haunt were impeccable and downright terrifying. Most had the texture of the “meat” they process at the farm. Many “borrowed” skin-looking masks, lots of sharp animalistic-looking teeth, hollowed out eyes, and beyond freaky contacts; we noticed at least one with completely blacked out eyes from contact lenses, which was nothing short of evil in appearance! A deranged bunny mask, complete with the big buck-bunny front teeth, an old man looking mask, and Pork Chop’s large, infamous, and creepily realistic pig mask.

The farm “hands” really get into their work, no time to wash their bloody and dirty hair and dirty, torn, and bloody overalls, shirts, pants, jackets, gowns, and other country livin’ attire. Just because they are hard at work does not mean they do not accessorize well. We saw fedoras, a bloody finger necklace, bandanas, livestock number tags, and weapons. More airbrushed makeup brings out the “best” in the dirty and bloody theme at Black Orchard. There are actors known to wear “leftovers” on their hands, and they are more than willing to share with visitors. You do not even have to ask!

Black Orchard is confidently located south of Shelbyville, Kentucky, at their famous Red Orchard Park. Tucked just far enough away from the glow and hum of the small town to make you really feel isolated in the country, but close enough to several restaurants and other amenities. From Kentucky St, signage for Black Orchard is illuminated by ground spotlights to indicate where the haunt is and where the parking entrance is located. Thank you for adding the appropriate signs!!

From there, parking cones directed us to the staff at the entrance of the lot, who kindly directed us where to park in their free lot. For those who may need them, restrooms are located around the barn before you pull into the parking lot. Black Orchard is seated directly in the middle of the small valley, so the ticket booth and queue lines are very visible and clear from both the parking lot and where you pull in.

Very polite and helpful staff can be found throughout the premises, so if you have any questions or concerns, help is never far away. Unfortunately, we witnessed a medical emergency while a customer was waiting in line to get in, but the staff worked great with local EMS to quickly and efficiently get them the help they needed.

The haunt itself is mostly outdoors and inside an authentic barn with a dirt floor, which poses a slight risk of tripping or falling, but they do a good job of illuminating any uneven surfaces you might encounter. One must remember that it’s only made to scare you, and nothing can truly hurt you, so you mustn’t run. They are so successful at scaring visitors that some forget that one golden rule.

Prior to visiting Black Orchard, we were able to obtain any pertinent information via their website and their Facebook page. Ticket prices, events, dates, hours of operation, and location are all easily locatable on their webpage. We do recommend that they outline more about being a touch haunt and what to expect for that on their website.

During our visit, the eerily dark and quiet parking lot was more than enough to get us in the mood for some scares. However, as we neared the large white barn complete with a sign reading “Black Orchard Meats,” we all began to have a worse feeling that we might not make it out alive. And the barn is just the beginning; trees surrounding the haunt held many more secrets we later uncovered, mostly unwillingly. A projection screen playing horrific entertainment and a few members of the Black family kept us occupied in the queue as we waited for our inevitable turn, preparing us for what was to come. The distant screams and revving chainsaws didn’t help calm our nerves either.

Once we were good to go, we hesitantly made our way further out into the field and towards the wooded area, leaving behind both safety and sanity. The family wasted no time in making us feel welcome, sharing the secrets behind their famous recipe almost immediately. They seemed rather keen on making us a part of their business, but not as help… As the meat!

Between the different shacks and scenes outside to the barn itself, we were constantly sized up and closely examined to see if we’d make a good meal. Chainsaws all throughout meticulously herded us in the direction they wanted us to go, like pigs being sent directly to the slaughter. And we weren’t about to question their ways! Energy was high, and the Black family didn’t let up on us, not even for a second. The storyline and authentic feeling of the setting were very strong.

After exiting the barn, just when our group thought we were finally in the clear, the frights didn’t cease, and we were chased all the way out to the start of their queue area. This was the perfect spot to overlook the terrifying barn in all its glory. If that barn fed off of our fear as we were told at the start, then it surely didn’t go hungry after we were long gone!

Visceral fear is a phrase that kept coming to mind while walking through Black Orchard. The kind of fear that wells up from somewhere deep within you and coils itself around your guts. Luckily for us, though, the cannibals at Black Orchard were more than willing to help extract these guts for us! Assuming we’d be willing to donate all the other prime cuts of meat our bodies would yield to the family. The leftovers of those who visited before us were strewn around the haunt, leaving a gory mess they were all too proud to show us. Glistening guts and various cuts of meat were frequent sights throughout the barn, with each scene making it feel like we were truly about to be butchered. Every scene in the barn was packed full of detail, and in the rare moments we weren’t fighting for our lives, it was fascinating to look around and take it all in. Butcher shops that truly felt like a discerning cannibal might stop by to group a few steaks for a cookout, rooms dedicated to cutting the meat up as efficiently as possible, to bodies being hung in dry storage to age to perfection, this place is a dream come true for folks who like to eat people!

That dream is a nightmare for the rest of us, though. The lighting through the barn and the surrounding yards dialed up the creep factor and made us feel like we really were walking through a nightmare. Ominous lighting throughout helped to hide the family until it was too late to escape them, making us easy prey. As if the lighting wasn’t enough, the sounds from the barn kept us on edge, too. The symphony of chainsaws and screams always had an undercurrent of intense sound coming from the barn that kept us on edge and running for safety. Sights and sounds weren’t the only thing we had to contend with though – we even had to deal with being branded, strange meat samples shoved in our mouths, and concerningly warm green slime smeared on us that brought one of our reviewers to the brink of nausea. All of these special effects combined to make this one intense haunt from start to finish!

From the moment the barn was seen in the distance, a feeling of dread and impending doom quickly came over all of us. The fog rolled across the valley, swallowing up the figures we could see in the distance. But we could always hear screams and the rip and roar of not one or two, but what sounded like an army of chainsaws! They were just cutting up wood, right?

The atmosphere was uneasy, and we had to remain vigilant and stay on our toes! Well, while we still had them. Pork Chop could be seen pacing in and out, waiting for his next group of fresh meat. Grunts and snarls could be heard from the beasts within the barn. The barn was hungry, and we were about to be dinner! As we stood by the lamp post, fear and the anticipation of what would happen next filled us all. After all, nothing good ever comes from the barn. Which brings up the question. What is in the barn?

Bray the Butcher’s description of what we were about to encounter most definitely did not settle our nerves. We were about to experience the Black Family at their finest! And the shelves needed to be restocked! However, none of us was ready to separate from any of our appendages. Not all scares were high intensity; some of them were more suspenseful, leaving our minds wandering. After this slow-burning intro, impending doom quickly followed.

From there, every step threw us into another horrifying scenario, where we found ourselves with the urge to run. And they said not to run! HA! That’s what you do when you’re in danger: you run! And we definitely felt like we were in danger. As we were attacked by all the freakish and deranged members of the Black family, every scare became more and more intense.

The ominous lighting, music, and smells immersed us in their nightmare so much so that we thought we would become their next cut of meat! Every corner we turned had someone or something lurking and waiting for us. Many wore the faces of livestock they had butchered, which made them look even more aggressive. Others wore the dirt and blood from the barn. The barn where, now we know, horrible things happen!

Several rabid animaltronics attacked us, we found ourselves in pure darkness, nearly sawed in half on 50 million occasions, we were split up, they changed the order of our group, tried to feed us rancid meat, they washed us, and did as much as they could to not only scare us, but make us uncomfortable, and it worked! There were sparks flying at us, a Kill Saw soared at our heads, and some of these brutes stood in the path ahead of us, heads cocked with a “Mess around and find out” look about them. Uh, no thanks.

And then came the finale. We were almost free, almost out of that nightmare, ALMOST! As we rounded the corner, the rip of the chainsaw echoed out! And then one after another. Some coming from behind us, some from in front of us, some even over us. We were completely at their mercy. We were like a game of cat and mouse. We barely made it out as their brood of chainsaw maniacs attacked us!

Entertainment & Value: 9.22

26. How satisfied with the entertainment provided by the MAIN attraction/s? (50% of score): 10

27. How satisfied with OTHER entertainment INCLUDED with the ticket price? (25% of score): 7.79

28. How appropriate is/are the ticket price/s? (25% of score): 9.08

It is easy to say the anticipation and excitement for our Black Orchard visit began long before we ever made it to the farm, BUT pulling onto the path to the barn raises the level even higher! Music could be heard from the entrance and just intensified as we got closer to the barn. Signature characters met everyone in the queue area, wandering in and out of the lines and crowd. These folks built the scene of what we were walking into in the darkness, giving us entertainment as we waited. There was also a projector displaying horror movies on an inflatable screen to help pass the wait.

Our tour lasted approximately 23 minutes in total, so the MPD (minutes per dollar) is 0.92, which calculates to almost a dollar per minute. Between the excitement of the outside atmosphere and the intensity of the darkness surrounding the barn, our entire group was entertained for the length of our tour on the grounds. Thankfully, none of us ended up in a body bag or on the dinner table…. For very long.

So what’s in the barn? You need to come out to Black Orchard in Shelbyville, Kentucky, and find out! The intensity at Black Orchard has grown; the barn has been fed our screams. Who knows what will happen next? Bravo for putting on one hell of a show this season!
