Chaos Convoy puts you on a military truck with armor and a paintball gun as you ride through a battlefield and shoot your way to freedom. Cataclysmic Convoy allows you to ride a real tank through a battlefield while wearing armor and armed with a paintball gun.

The cast at City of Chaos fully embrace their roles, keeping visitors unnerved and engaged in the haunt experience. One memorable moment came while navigating the wooden fence maze in the dark. Disembodied voices taunted us, misdirecting us with false hints and laughter as we stumbled through the twisting pathways. Actors lurking behind the fences whispered unsettling phrases, breathed heavily as we passed, and even repeated our own words back to us in eerie singsong voices. The effect was disorienting, making us feel a bit lost and toyed with.

The clowns were another highlight. We think there were only three of them, but the way they darted through the maze – popping out from above, behind, and in front – made it feel like we were surrounded by an entire carload of crazed clowns. Their relentless energy amplified the chaos, and we never knew where they would come from next.

The possession room (as we refer to it) delivered one of the most intense encounters of the night. A dark priest and a horned girl performed a chilling ritual, blocking our pathway through the room. With no clear way around them, we were forced to inch closer, all while hoping we would not get pulled into their terrifying ceremony.

Outside, we stumbled into a more playful but equally creepy scare. A ghostly girl invited us to join her in her playground, only for a menacing stranger to suddenly appear from a camper offering candy. The interaction felt like a twisted “stranger danger” moment, and we declined to join in on the candy.

Costuming: 8.1

5. How complete, unique, detailed were the costumes, accessories? (35% of score): 8.1

6. Were the masks, makeup creative, detailed, realistic? (30% of score): 8

7. How appropriate were the costumes for the respective scenes, themes? (20% of score): 8.25

8. How believable-, detailed-looking were the queue actors? (See Note if N/A) (15% of score):

City of Chaos featured impressive costumes and elaborate makeup, though we would love to see even more attention to detail throughout the haunt.

The possession ritual scene stood out for its fully realized costumes of the dark-robed and hooded priest wearing an animal skull mask.

Another great costume was the voodoo priest, whose layered costume of bones and charms, paired with detailed face paint, created a visually striking and intimidating character. Adding a few more detailed looks across the haunt would give the overall visual impact a stronger impact.

The various clowns boasted fantastically frightening makeup that matched their chaotic energy. The roaming queue actors were also memorable, including a doll character with a stitched-on face and a creepy-cool jester -both perfectly fitting their roles.

Some scenes, however, did not quite hit the mark. The exorcism birth scene was chaotic and intense, but the actors’ costumes were so active that pieces fell off during the performance, which slightly diminished the effect. Hopefully, this was just an isolated mishap. We understand that birthing babies, especially demonic ones, can be a messy business.

16. How well did the "vibe" flow after, between the attraction/s? (15% of score): 7.5

In past years, City of Chaos built its haunt around an overarching storyline, but this year the focus shifted to multiple scenes filled with favorite frightening characters. Guests navigate a mix of indoor buildings and outdoor spaces, and several times we found ourselves uncertain which way to go – heightening the sense of unease and making it feel like we’d stepped into a horror movie where a real killer could be lurking just out of sight.

One unique outbuilding served as the entrance to a mineshaft, which initially appeared to be an optical illusion, but it descended steeply underground. This made it the perfect setting for a catacomb scene, complete with skeletons and bodies, and was incredibly immersive.

Our personal favorite areas included the fence maze, the possession room, and the clown silo, each delivering unique scares while immersing visitors in the environment. Another highlight in the scenic immersion category was the graveyard, featuring freshly dug graves and half-buried coffins protruding from the ground—a visually striking and effective scene.

Special Effects: 7.75

17. How effective were the sound effects? (20% of score): 8

18. How realistic were the scene designs, details? (30% of score): 7.4

19. How effective, realistic were the props, animatronics? (30% of score): 7.75

20. How well did they use creative, special, sensory effects? (20% of score): 8

City of Chaos makes excellent use of “old school” practical effects, giving the haunt a tactile, hands-on feel that sets it apart from others that rely heavily on animatronics. Several scenes employed fluorescent paint, adding eerie details like glowing handprints that caught our attention in the near-dark. Clever lighting was used throughout obscure areas and kept us constantly questioning what might be hiding just out of sight.

The laser swamp stood out as one of the City of Chaos’ best effects, complete with trees, swirling fog, and creatures hiding beneath! Other memorable touches included floors and walkways lit from below, a glowing red wooden coffin, and a giant knife in the hillbilly dinner that clanged and sparked…simple yet extremely effective. We particularly appreciated the practical scare effects over the stiff animatronics.

That said, animatronics were not entirely absent. A room filled with hanging body bags featured individually withering and shaking figures as we navigated the space.

The Scare Factor: 8.3

21. How scary was it? (35% of score): 8.35

22. How well did they provide scares to everyone in the group? (15% of score): 8.5

23. How predictable were the scares? (25% of score): 8.25

24. How well did they provide a wide variety (types) of scares? (10% of score): 8.35

25. How strong was the ending / finale? (15% of score): 8

City of Chaos skillfully targets a variety of phobias to create scares, with darkness at the forefront. Much of the experience takes place in dimly lit outdoor areas and mazes, and well-timed power outages plunge guests into total blackness, allowing only brief glimpses before the next blackout. Inside, minimal but strategic lighting enhances suspense, keeping visitors unsure of what lurks ahead.

Claustrophobia also plays a major role. A striking striped hallway closes in, leaving just a narrow slit for escape, while tight spaces like a zig-zagging closet filled with clothes hide unexpected surprises and lurking creatures. For those with a fear of clowns, the clown maze twists and turns, disorienting visitors as performers appear from every direction.

We were chilled by the intimidating voices in the fence maze, but also had the most fun there as the actors really had fun messing with us in the dark!

Disorientation plays a key role as well, with a strobe-lit room filled with hooded figures… we know some were not real, but they all seemed to be moving to block our way as we tried to get through with lights flashing in our eyes!

Camouflage-based scares are also present, with actors in ghillie suits blending into their surroundings until the perfect moment to strike. We loved the pumpkin area that filled with wickedly grinning jack-o-lanterns glowing orange everywhere in the darkness, when a figure suddenly appeared from the vine-covered walls.

City of Chaos has great jump scares… the pink glowing crime-scene bathroom really got one of us! And be careful in the kids’ playroom… even the cuddly toys come to life! Even seemingly empty rooms demand caution in your approach.

Entertainment: 8.04

26. How satisfied with the entertainment provided by the MAIN attraction/s? (50% of score): 7.95

27. How satisfied with OTHER entertainment INCLUDED with the ticket price? (25% of score): 7.5

General admission to City of Chaos Haunt is $20. Our walkthrough lasted around 17 minutes, which works out to .85 MPD (minutes per dollar), which is a respectable value when considering the level of entertainment and atmosphere you get for the price.

In addition to the haunt itself, guests can enjoy extra amenities that round out the experience. There is a gift shop stocked with City of Chaos t-shirts as well as Halloween and haunt-related merchandise. The central area has a fire pit area perfect for warming up and regrouping. The same area offers a photo op scene to capture the memory of your visit.

If you would like to extend your evening, the Haunted Shooting Gallery and Chaos Convoy attractions are available at an additional cost. Both provide unique, haunt-inspired activities that complement the main attraction and make City of Chaos a full-night destination for entertainment.
