Summary:

Dr. Fright’s Halloween Nights is back with another mega-maze – Route 666, Vol. 2. Building on the prior year’s Route 666, but this time with a completely new set of themes, Dr. Fright’s is a long and winding covered trail that takes in seven distinct zones: Stormvale Cemetery, Slasher House, The Grindhouse: Apocalypse, Found Footage, Hollywood Horror: Resurrection, The Island of the Dolls, and Killer Clowns: Ultimate Championship. The trail is punctuated by a short rest-stop and ends with an array of themed concessions and spooky souvenirs. Ever impressive and full of mystery, Dr. Fright’s is full of fresh meat this year!

Cast Review:

The cast at Dr. Fright’s was seriously stellar, with a well-balanced number of actors scattered throughout each zone. Every area seemed to make good use of its actors, though some sections felt more populated than others, likely to build tension and create anticipation.

Standout performances included the energetic clown in Killer Clowns: Ultimate Championship, who leapt on top of the barrels with a burst of energy, which set the frenetic tone for this segment of the maze. The Slasher House area also featured some particularly eerie Ghostface performers, who continually popped out of nowhere to stab us! We feel that actors at Dr. Fright’s give it their all, varying their performances between pure jump scares to more surreal and ethereal presences.

In Hollywood Horror Resurrection, the screaming girl from Saw was being dismembered by a machine, and it was truly unsettling and gruesome. Even the hillbillies in The Grindhouse: Apocalypse were engaging; talking and interacting with us, enhancing the sense of immersion as if we were actually there in their realm (including being chased and ambushed by a particularly exuberant chainsawer).

One of the most impressive elements throughout the maze was the actors’ ability to remain still, coming to life at the right moment for a well-timed scare. A special mention goes to the lifelike nun in the midway rest area. She may have been a statue (or not – you be the judge!), but the uncertainty made her all the more terrifying.

The diversity of the zones provided a great variety of scares, from quick, jump-out moments to more interactive encounters where the actors would engage in short conversations, making the experience rich and unpredictable.

Costuming Review:

The costumes in this haunt were designed to blend into the surroundings, creating an atmosphere often hard to distinguish, between scenery and what the actors were wearing. Dr. Fright’s has always done this well, but particularly so this year where we were really stunned by the level of detail and layers to the costumes. This ambiguity adds a unique layer of tension, which made it frightening when certain elements unexpectedly “come to life.”

Each costume was crafted to fit the specific context of each scene, whether that be a film or a story of Dr. Fright’s own creation. Film characters – such as Ghostface and Michael Myers – were rendered in a particularly realistic fashion. We’d like to make special note of the doll masks in The Island of the Dolls, and the clown masks and makeup in Killer Clowns: Ultimate Championship: they were haunting, with extremely unsettling designs that left an impression on us.

Customer Service Review:

Dr. Fright’s is located in an easily navigable location and has plenty of parking near the site. This year, the large holding tent for ticket checking and security was located in a slightly more linear location. The maze itself, whilst threatening, never felt unsafe. We had a short chat with the security guard and the ticket taker, who were both kind and helpful, always smiling and welcoming. Dr. Fright’s has an extensive website available, explaining all the vital details, including the attractions, times, dates, and other important information.

Immersion Review:

Each area was properly themed, immersing us fully in its unique atmosphere. The transitions felt natural, and nothing seemed out of place within each zone, maintaining a consistent and believable experience throughout.

The queue itself was split into two sections, with a rest area in between, allowing for themed holding zones without any crossover between scenes. This separation was smartly executed, as it preserved the integrity of each distinct environment without blending the themes. Dr. Fright’s have, in past years, utilized individual mazes, rather than one huge mega-maze, so this rest zone was a welcome surprise to allow our adrenaline to cool.

One of the highlights was the creative mix of storylines, like encountering dolls on a deserted island or a twisted “killer clown championship”, both of which came from the imagination of the creators. The Found Footage section was particularly immersive, with a clever use of CCTV projections in each room that allowed us to see ourselves—and the horrors lurking behind us, in real time.

Storylines were clear and easy to follow, with each segment introduced by a narrator, enhancing the flow and making the experience feel well-structured.

Special FX Review:

The special effects in this experience were both creative and immersive, with an ambient soundscape that enhanced each scene. In certain areas, sounds were tailored to match the setting, such as in the Hollywood-themed zone, where the soundtracks echoed those of iconic films, adding authenticity and atmosphere.

Scene design, though sometimes minimalistic, was meticulous and clever. The use of interactive props, like laser guns simulating a scene from “Saw”, were wonderfully surprising. Though the effects were low-tech compared to some other haunts, this didn’t detract from the experience. The quality of scare acting and scenery more than compensated, bringing each area to life.

Sound effects were strategically placed, with details like the beep of a car adding realism when entering the garage in Slasher House. In fact, the entire design of Slasher House evoked classic 80s movies of the same genre: think an abandoned beer pong table and postered teenage bedroom.

In several areas throughout the haunt, masks lined the walls, creating a suspenseful uncertainty about which were props, and which might conceal actors. A particularly eerie smoke effect created a lake-like illusion awaiting a horrifying emergence.

One segment featured live CCTV feeds, showing us on screen as we moved from room to room. This paranormal investigator effect not only heightened the immersion, but also encouraged us to glance up, where we would occasionally spot things moving in the background that we hadn’t initially noticed. The feeling of being stalked was very real!

Scare Factor Review:

We found this experience genuinely terrifying! There were many moments where we couldn’t help but scream and jump, thanks to well-timed and placed jump scares that came at us from every direction: above, below, and all around. The compact layout kept the scares up-close and intense, with surprises waiting at every turn. Dr. Fright’s excels very well with hidden actors, who were subsumed within the scenery. Therefore, jump-scares kept coming, even when we didn’t expect them. It’s an effect we rarely see executed so well.

One of the scariest aspects was the personalized feel; since we weren’t crowded into large groups, each scare felt like a one-on-one encounter, amplifying the fear factor. This was achieved through individual batch sizes,
and we were always batched with the group we came with. Since there were only two of us, the feeling of facing the terrors alone was certainly real.

The final area, however, served more as a decompression zone, rather than a continuation of the scares. While it provided a nice break after the intense experience, it lacked actors and felt less climactic than the rest of the attraction.

E&V Review:

The main maze and uniquely themed zones were highly satisfying, ingenious, and terrifying. Lasting approximately 24 minutes, the cost of this haunt is approximately £1 per minute. For an exhilarating night of frights this is well worth it. Other inclusions within the ticket price were limited, mainly consisting of free photo opportunities, with standees and set pieces. But, many food and drink options were available at extra cost, creating a fun fairground atmosphere. For the sheer number of scares within, Dr. Fright’s is well worth the price of admission.
