Summary

Fatal Fear has its roots in Steiner Ranch as an impressive home haunt that blended intense scares, immersive storytelling, and jaw-dropping effects. This year, they’ve outgrown that original location and moved out to a new location in the heart of Texas Hill Country, right next to Lake Travis. Just because they outgrew their past location doesn’t mean they’ve completely left those roots behind. They still manage to bring an intimate feel to their commercial haunt thanks to clever set design, interactive actors, and interesting themes. On our visit, we traveled through the four realms of the haunt: Mortis Manor, the… Read More…

Guest Experience8.9

In general, Fatal Fear provided a solid guest experience, but the parking situation was admittedly more complicated than we expected it to be. While there are signs directing guests to the parking lot, it’s easy to miss the turn in and have to do a loop around the surrounding streets. Once in the lot, parking was straightforward but we then had to walk in almost total darkness for nearly 5 minutes to get to the actual haunt. While that might not seem like a long time, the lack of sidewalks and lighting did make it feel like a much longer… Read More…

Immersion9.23

We appreciated the amount of detailing that this haunt brought to the paths into and throughout the grounds of the haunt before we even entered. There were decorations throughout, and they’ve built an excellent facade for their first themed leg – Mortis Manor. That set a high bar for the rest of the themes and transitions within, and Fatal Fear definitely delivered on that front! There were clear signs of scene transitions that felt like they made sense, and there was a strong sense of each story in each leg of our journey. That sort of creativity and storytelling was… Read More…

Special Effects8.55

Alas, that chainsaw moment that we mentioned earlier was part of a few other sound-related bumps for Fatal Fear. This haunt is fairly open, and we did experience some sound bleed from louder effects like their scream and shake wall in other rooms. Credit where credit is due, though: the soundscapes overall crescendoed and decrescendoed throughout the haunt, with a nice variety of sound based on the themes of each room. This haunt was, for the most part, quite detailed, creative, and realistic. Living spaces looked lived-in, their video store was packed with real-life horror VHS’s, and Mortis Manor felt… Read More…

Characters8.38

If you give a man a broken chainsaw, they’re not likely to be terribly menacing. To our surprise and delight, the scareactor wielding the broken chainsaw in Fatal Fear still managed to menace us through strong physical interaction and swipes with the silent chainsaw. In fact, all of the actors within the haunts had a strong approach to interactivity both physically and verbally. We had a great time bantering with the video store clerks, one of whom was taking a “smoke break” just outside of the storefront facade. Thanks to the variety of themes within Fatal Fear, the characters all… Read More…

Scare Factor8.13

By and large, Fatal Fear delivers consistently intense and frequent scares. There were a couple, like the shake-and-scream wall, that were lower on the intensity scale, but we appreciated that those moments were all sandwiched between strong scares. There were a few moments where the scares that involved folks jumping out at us were a bit predictable, but we also found several quite out of left field in the best way. The animatronic scares in particular weren’t where we would have expected them, which really added to the experience. Much like many a Stephen King novel, this haunt had a… Read More…

Value5.6

Despite the heart and hard work that’s evident in this haunt, it’s a hard one for us to recommend as a great value at the current price point ($26) and the walkthrough time (9 minutes on the dot). Do they deliver a great haunt in those nine minutes? Absolutely! We just wish there was more to explore at that price point. While the addition of the photo ops were much appreciated, there’s just not a lot to keep you on the haunt grounds beyond the haunt itself. Keeping in mind that this is their first year in the new location… Read More…
