Something that felt well-executed across Fear Island was layered sound design. “The Ravenous” was strong in this respect, with atmosphere built through the gentle sounds of crickets, before descending into thunder, lightning, and even tinkling lullaby music, which meant a much fuller, more oppressive soundscape pervaded the maze within. Whirring chainsaws put us on immediate edge, whilst smells of barbecue and petrol in the scenes of butchery heightened the sensory effect. “Heartless” contained an imposing range of scenic elements, from workshop tops strewn with woodworking props and chambers brimming with implements and circular saws to a sequence in which gales, foam, and air cannons pulsated against us, almost like being caught in a mini tornado. Once within the swamp, lasers shone forth with a squishy floor simulating the marsh, whilst in the woods twinkling lights made the atmosphere more whimsical and mysterious.
Imaginative scenic design in “SNAP” was really fun, with circus spaces, dressing room, concession stands, a caravan, not to mention a full-scale evil clown replica that made the space feel distinctly less jolly. At one point, the set forces you to duck down and traverse a walkway which is positioned above a lower barred space, which you can see teeming with actors as you pass and inevitably descend into it. “Phantoms” had by far the most impressive exterior, whilst inside a pneumatic lift tossed us about, and a séance salt circle we had to stand in added lovely theatricality (we initially thought we shouldn’t stand in the salt, afraid we might ruin it). We also saw an animatronic coffin on the balcony here, but we don’t think it was working quite as intended, with a little less juddering than presumably it’s meant to. And we can’t not mention the blood (well, water) effects in “Ravenous”, where when passing around a most fetid object, you get a jugular spray. And the finale here will hit you with splashes to the face and, quite possibly, a bucket of something unspeakable.
