What is “Haunt Blog?”

Haunt Blog

Well, here goes Haunt Blog!

This is where we’ll be sharing what we’ve learned from visiting, reviewing and travelling to haunts over the years. Hopefully we can shed some light on things that do and don’t work… both for operating haunted houses as well as visiting them.

So What’s the Big Idea?

The Scare Factor’s main goal is to be the “go-to” place for all of the haunted house info you need. We enjoy going to haunts so much that we want you to have just as much fun as we do! That’s why we provide reviews, a comprehensive directory and a listing of year-round events to help you (the “customers”) locate and learn about as many attractions as possible.

On the flip-side, as “insiders” in the industry, our experiences with touring and critiquing haunts really lets us see the good, the bad and the ugly of what’s out there. We get sneak peeks, behind-the-scenes tours and even access to conventions and trade shows that are reserved specifically for these businesses. With all of the seminars and Facebook groups that are out there, it’s really incredible how much these “haunters” are willing to share with one another regarding best industry practices, makeup demonstrations, prop-making techniques, etc.

Unfortunately, haunters very rarely get to see these tactics and techniques put to use in a “live show” (other than their own). Because they’re all open at the same time, they’re usually too busy running their own places to get out and see what everyone else is doing.

Because we want to direct customers to the best and scariest haunts out there, yet we also want to see each of these haunts succeed as much as possible, we decided it’s time to create a place where we can share all of the things we’ve learned on both ends of the spectrum. If you’re wanting to make the best of your haunt season endeavors (whether you’re going to haunts or running one), we’re going to do our best to help you make it happen!

Now, despite all of the things we’ve learned, we know that we aren’t “know-it-all’s” by any stretch of the imagination.

We haven’t been to every haunt that’s out there, but we’ve been fortunate enough to visit almost 80 haunts across the Midwest and submitted over 200 reviews in the last 7 years that we’ve been reviewing. Several of those are considered “Top Haunts” by multiple authorities and customers alike and, to pull off those kinds of numbers, we’ve learned how to make the best use of our time while travelling to (and visiting) them. We hope to help you do the same!

We’ve also never owned or worked in a haunt. That said, there are some operational tasks that we simply haven’t faced or had to deal with and, thus, can’t speak from experience on. Our topics, as they relate to haunters, will be with the goal of providing insight on the things we’ve seen that do and don’t work from our perspective as reviewers.
