Haunted Trail of Chaos Review (2024)

We were pleasantly surprised to see so many actors in Haunted Trail of Chaos. Just about every room and transition zone had at least one actor. And we typically saw the same actor multiple times. They would always come out when we least expected it. Sometimes, we would even see them at a distance knowing we would have to face them in the future.

We encountered many different types of actors. This came as no surprise since the “Chaos” is in the haunt’s name. For example, each clown in the circus area acted differently. One wanted to be our friend, one acted crazy with its chainsaw and another just wanted to jump out and scare us. Some areas had cast members randomly placed, but overall each had a specific location and reason for being there.

Some actors were interactive with us, while some would strictly jump out and scare us or just stand and stalk us. Sometimes this is okay, but if done too often, it can become repetitive. The interactive ones would block our path or have a conversation with us. We especially enjoyed all the mind games the cast members would play with us. They would purposely point us in the wrong direction, make us get lost, and then we would have to turn around and face the same actors that messed with us in the first place.

The interactive actors were the ones that stood out the most. They did a great job of staying in character and playing their specific roles. We especially loved the actor who kept laughing and following us seemingly everywhere. Even Jason and “The Creeper” did a fantastic job of just standing and stalking. They picked the perfect people to portray them as well.

Most costumes worn by the actors were perfectly chosen and of good quality. We only saw a few standard costumes that were bought and put on. Some of our favorites were the first nun we encountered, the doll, and the laughing pilgrim who kept following us.

Masks and makeup were similar in that many of them looked great but there were a few that were lacking in some important details. Some actors appeared to just have their faces painted black or white, depending on the scene. Other actors had some awesome masks like the nun, the pigman, and many of the clowns.

Each scene had an actor that fit well based on what was in the scene. For example, there was a doll in a dollhouse, Jason at a cabin, clowns in a carnival, nuns in a church, a pigman in a chop house, etc. There were only a few times when we questioned what an actor was doing in a location, but those were only the ones who would pop out quickly and then disappear.

A few queue actors were available to contribute to the spookiness of the haunt. There were a few small clown children who were being bullies. We don’t think they liked that we wanted to get a picture with them (which we never even got). They would just stand there and stare us down. Creepy! Michael Myers was a huge hit, too. He did what he does best: stand in the distance and stare. I don’t think we saw him move very much. Perfect Michael Myers!

Haunted Trail of Chaos is easy enough to locate and navigate the premises. The only confusion we encountered was when we first arrived and weren’t sure where to park. They got us straightened out though. Their parking lot is part gravel, part grass so be careful on a rainy night! We visited the night after we got dumped on by buckets of rain so EVERYTHING was muddy. It was to be expected though, so no big deal.

The entrance off the main road has a sign next to it that could use some more lighting. But, if you use your GPS, it will take you right to the haunt location. The ticket booth was immediately next to the parking area which was near the queue line entrance as well. They also had some vendors set up with their tents and spooky items for sale.

Safety is this haunt’s number one priority. Before arriving, we received a warning about the mud, which was also posted on their Facebook page. They told us they put down some hay to try to dry the ground a little but there is only so much you can do after being hit with an unexpected hurricane in Kentucky. The stairs within the haunt were well-lit and without any jump scares so no safety concerns there.

Living in the South, we always encounter friendly people, so it came as no surprise that this haunt was no different. From the ticket booth attendants to the queue line employees, everyone was friendly and willing to help us in any way.

Basic information about the haunt can be found on their Facebook page. It shows their address, hours, and dates open. Unfortunately, it does not show whether or not it is ADA accessible, the touching policies, or whether it is an indoor or outdoor haunt. They do update their page with rainout information if necessary. Any other important updates are promptly posted on their Facebook page as well.

Once we arrived, we could easily tell we were at a haunted house. Between the lighting, the music, and the scary queue actors, we were ready to get scared! They had giant skeletons standing next to the ticket booth, a VERY awesome hand-painted hearse (photos attached), and a carriage with a skeleton riding it.

Overall, we felt like we were immersed in the haunt. The actors, scenes, and props kept the scares flowing. However, there were a few times we noticed some exposed cords or wiring. And the scene with Jason bunched together with the doll house seemed out of place. There were some really cool transition zones, like the red and white rope light hallway or the creepy forest.

Upon exiting the attraction, we were immediately next to the queue line. Everything was very close together which can be fine until large crowds start arriving. We worry about there being enough space for larger crowds of people. Even the queue line was not very long.

Sounds were used effectively throughout the haunt. The carnival, Camp Crystal Lake, and the church sound effects were some of our favorites. There were only a handful of scenes that were dead silent, but they did a great job of making it even more creepy.

Many of the scenes appeared to be designed with a lot of time and thought. We did, however, encounter a few dead spaces with standard black plastic with very few props and designs. With that said, there were some amazing room setups. We especially loved the Carnival with all the black light paint and cool props. The Butcher Shop scene was very cool as well with all the body parts, bones, and half-sawed women hanging.

Haunted Trail of Chaos has some pretty good props and animatronics. There were some giant animatronics that were used to their advantage many times. The timing on them was perfect. Most often, they would use an actor as a distraction and the animatronic would activate immediately after to cause an unexpected scare. They had props such as toxic waste barrels, a Jack-in-the-box, multiple dolls and teddy bears, and a disgusting figure in a bed.

Sensory Effects were used decently. There was limited fog use, but it was used well. They had many flickering lights or different colored lights in multiple scenes that fit the direction of the scene. We would have liked to see a little more use of sensory effects, such as the use of water, different scents, or more fog. Otherwise, we enjoyed the way everything fit together.

We, as reviewers, don’t scare easily, but my heart was pounding, and sweat was pouring down my face by the end of this haunt. They did a great job of scaring us! There were many jump scares and actors in unexpected locations, but one scene in particular sticks in our minds. It’s the scene with the grotesque “human” on the bed. We weren’t even sure what it was supposed to be, but it was disgusting. It was just a prop, but it looked so real and nasty that we were intrigued by it.

Being in a group of two, you would think it would be easy to scare everyone in our group. This is not always the case because scare actors tend to single out the ones who are the most scared. This was not the case for Haunted Trail of Chaos. They scared each one of us equally with their perfect timing and amazing distractions. One distraction that sticks in our mind the most is the werewolf scene. We were walking through the dark and silent woods when we came upon a prop that looked like it could be an actor, then a werewolf prop, both to our left. As we were checking out the werewolf prop, an actor creepily snuck up to our right side without us noticing.

Haunted Trail of Chaos used many types of scares. The main ones used were jump scares, but we also encountered distractions, as mentioned above, suspense buildups, such as a scene with a pig man. We rounded a corner and he was standing there waiting for us, then turned around and disappeared. We knew we would see him again, it was just a matter of time. Phobias were used in many different forms: clowns, darkness, dolls, giant monsters, and enclosed spaces.

The haunted ended on a dark school bus. While it was creepy, it was not very intense or significantly scarier than the rest of the haunt. We first came up these steps, which had an actor on a pedestal staring us down, and we entered the bus from the back. Inside the bus, it was very dark and loud, creepy sounds were playing. We kept expecting something to jump out, but nothing happened. We would have liked to see something more with the ending. Unfortunately, it is difficult to scare someone inside a bus to make them go running. Perhaps the bus could be placed elsewhere in the haunt to provide a creepier finale.

Haunted Trail of Chaos is definitely worth your time and money! We found it to be chaotic, exciting, and unlike any other haunt we have been to. We were in the haunt for a total of 17.28 minutes and it cost $15.00 to enter. The Minutes per Dollar rating is 1.15 which is much higher than most haunts we have been to.

The only thing that fell flat was the extra entertainment. We noticed an axe-throwing booth but it was unclear whether or not that was included in the price. We would have liked to see games or bonfires or something other than queue actors, music, and spooky decorations.

The haunt, overall, was fantastic though! We laughed, jumped (A LOT), and cried a little, HAHA. We had a great time at Haunted Trail of Chaos and will be back again next year. Make sure to check them out for their 2024 season!
