What is Detention?

There we all stood outside the school, battered, breathless, and bewildered – wondering if the team member we’d lost inside was ever going to come back out!
Blood dripped down faces. Shirts were drenched in sweat. Hands were still fighting their way free from restraints, and nobody looked quite as confident as they had before class began.
This was us after we finally escaped Detention.

You may have heard of Scareview Grave Schoul, the charity haunt in St. Albans, West Virginia, that raises funds for the West Side Volunteer Fire Department. But have you heard what runs rampant through the school halls when the bad students are sent to Detention?
Well, some of us among The Scare Factor crew are gluttons for punishment, and it was time to find out!
For those wondering what Detention even is – because there currently isn’t much information online- it is Scareview’s more extreme, full-contact experience, offered via appointment-only on select dates. Students, savages, and stalkers roamed the sinister school alongside the effects of the traditional haunt, but the experience was more personal. You get to become part of the scenes; you get to feel them. Admission was $20 per person, parking was free, and the school includes multiple flights of stairs, ramps, and uneven flooring.
You need to sign a waiver, and crying for your momma won’t save you. Your lesson for the day: If you’re told to keep your thumb in your mouth, you best listen!
We rolled in 11-strong, including our friends from Haunt Nighters, ready to kick off the detention party. It didn’t take long before we realized that maybe, just maybe, we should’ve paid a little more attention to that waiver.
Class was in session, and the punishment was about to be served. Come with us inside Detention!
Nora:
“Camera crew #1 – Tyler – come with me,” the haunt manager, AKA sketchy-looking clown, said before pulling him aside for a private conversation.
I could tell immediately that they were scheming, and whatever they were planning apparently wasn’t information I was allowed to have. When Tyler came back, his attempt at reassurance was, “Don’t worry. While it’s happening, you may not like it, but afterward you’ll be like, ‘Woooo!’”

Wonderful. I was already reconsidering my life choices, and I hadn’t even made it through the front door.
We entered the schoolhouse in several pre-planned groups, but Detention apparently had its own lesson plan. Almost immediately, they started sending us in different directions, and three members of our group – Sam, Ethan, and Lindsay – simply disappeared into the shadows.
Then came the spiders.
Several students quickly discovered that, fake or not, hairy spiders were an excellent way to make me move. Not long after that, two men grabbed me, pulled a black pillowcase over my head, and zip-tied my hands together in front of me. With my vision gone and my hands useless, they started rudely escorting me somewhere, occasionally offering such helpful instructions as “step down” and “get in.”
Get in WHAT?! A vehicle started. And then we were off.

Where were we going? No freaking clue. Whoever was driving seemed to regard the brakes more as a suggestion than a requirement. We whipped around so much that I couldn’t tell whether we were doing donuts, racing laps, or being transported directly to my final resting place.
Oh, and remember: my hands were still zip-tied together, so holding on wasn’t exactly an option.
Eventually, my kidnappers dumped me at another unknown location, which turned out to be… the school again. Was Tyler still with me? I had absolutely no idea. I yelled for him several times and got nothing in return. You’ll have to watch our walkthrough video to find out.
Back inside, Detention continued handing out assignments I definitely hadn’t signed up for. Actors made me touch things, ordered me around, put me on a bed while threatening me with weapons, and sent us ducking and dodging through body bags and whatever else they could throw our way.
Then there was the cleaner, who repeatedly sprayed me with his plunger. The joke was on him – it felt fantastic. It felt like it was 100 degrees inside that building.
And through all of this, my hands remained zip-tied together. Anytime the restraints started loosening, someone was kind enough to tighten them back up. Thanks, guys. Really appreciated that.

I had no idea exactly how long we spent in Detention, but it felt like at least 40 minutes of screaming, jumping, dodging, complying, questioning my decisions, and occasionally trying to run with my hands still clasped.
When I finally escaped, several others had already made it outside. Everyone looked exhausted, sweaty, and extremely pleased with themselves while covered in some combination of goo, fake blood, dirt, water, and substances I probably didn’t need identified.
Would I do Detention again? Absolutely. If interactive, full-contact haunts are your kind of punishment, I’d recommend earning yourself a trip to Detention, too. Just make sure you check whether they have any hall passes available first 😉 I do recommend expanding on actor dialogue a bit; there was some repetitive yelling that didn’t add to the experience, along with someone constantly yelling, “Walk.” I feel like there are better dialogue alternatives that would have made this more intense, without tearing out their voices for the night.
Lindsay:
“You know what? I feel like being bratty tonight.”
These were the words I confidently uttered in the car as we were en route to Scareview Grave Schoul this past weekend. We were there to serve our ‘Detention’, an extreme event that the haunt is holding to kick off the season for the first two weekends. Unfortunately for us, the ‘staff’ at this school were more than ready to deal with unruly students, and all of us- including this Lone Wolf- were about to get a serious time out! (This was *totally* going on our Permanent Records.)
While Detention wasn’t the most physically extreme haunt I’d done, I’ve never experienced one where it was so hard to keep the group together. We got separated constantly, and it began the minute we entered the haunt! Still managed to maintain five people for a while, but then there were three… then two… and some of us even wound up alone for a while, like a male group member who got whisked away by a group of actors. Hearing him fighting for his life in the other room really freaked us out! Many crazy things happened to us, too. We witnessed group members having their sleeves tied together as makeshift restraints, being zip-tied to set pieces, smeared with blood, kidnapped – and that’s just some of it!
I guess I am a little spoiled: I didn’t get messed with quite as much as the rest of the group, and was a bit disappointed when we got out. Can’t remember exactly what I said to get this man’s attention, but the manager outside was suddenly asking, “You want to go back through alone?” And of course, my response was, “Hell yeah. I’ll take all of ‘em on, I don’t give a sh*t.” “Okay. But on one condition,” he replied. “What’s that?” “You’re wearing the diaper.” Oh, I was *totally* down for that: googoo gaga, b*tches.

Well, I got what I wished for the second time around – messed with. Thoroughly. They chased me around, pinned me on a bed and got in my face, sprayed me with water, got me a little bloody, hooded me and dragged me off at one point… I could go on. BTW, they have a rule that comes with the diaper: you have to keep your thumb in your mouth like a baby as you’re going through the house, and if you remove it at any point, the actors may take you back to the front room to start the walkthrough all over again. I called their bluff on that, and had my thumb out of my mouth for about half the house before a couple of actors noticed and said something… next thing I knew, they had my wrist in a vice grip, and I was being marched right back to where I started!
Bottom line: Detention was wild. A bump in physical contact and making customers a little messier- more blood/dirt- would make it even better. Regardless, many lessons were taught that night, and by the time it was over, we were all completely ‘Schouled’ by Scareview!
Sam:
Growing up, I always wondered what I’d be when I grew up. Maybe an astronaut. A marine biologist. Hell, even a mechanical engineer if I worked hard enough. But no. Fifteen years after graduating, I somehow found myself right back where it all started: detention.
I figured my impeccable charm and ability to think on the fly would be more than enough to persuade the staff to let me go. Boy, was I mistaken. This isn’t your normal school staff. They’re relentless. They’ll chase you down the halls, separate you from your classmates, zip-tie you to random objects, and run you through the corridors in a wheelchair like you’re a shopping cart of groceries on Supermarket Sweep.
At one point, they even rubbed soap (or some other unidentified substance) in my face for talking back. To be fair, they started it, and I was merely expressing my frustrations via a carefully selected series of expletives. And, as it turns out, that wouldn’t even be the most heinous thing I’d say during my punishment.
The halls were dark and claustrophobic in places, making it nearly impossible to see more than a few inches in front of my face. I think I spent about 15 minutes of the haunt completely alone, which did absolutely nothing to calm my separation anxiety. I was grabbed, pulled, and herded into passageways I would never have willingly entered if I wasn’t forced to do so.
At one point, I was surrounded, my head was shoved into a sink, and a large man approached carrying zip ties and a burlap sack. Naturally, I assumed this was the moment I was getting snatched up, never to speak to all of my two friends ever again. Thankfully, he let me go.
At the time, I was just grateful to live another day. But ever since I got home, I can’t help thinking, “Why not me?”
Did I talk too much?
Was I too awkward?
Maybe my huge muscles intimidated them?
Are they mad at me?
Ethan:
This school’s Detention teaches lessons the hard way, violently driving you insane with every twist and turn. The curriculum is pain, punishment, and torture, no lunch or recess. Blood-soaked and bound, some blindfolded, we learned there was no hope. We were forsaken to roam the halls of Scareview. They survive off your fear, and they have perfect ways of extracting it from you. Makeovers with blood and having your hands restricted were commonplace for the unlucky souls who dared speak up or make a mistake. Not a single person who entered Scareview left unchanged that evening!
Trevor:
As a former class clown, I’m no stranger to detention and drawing the ire of school staff. Unfortunately, the faculty at Scareview will suffer no fools – they are, however, perfectly happy to make said fool suffer.
Immediately upon entering, we were berated, moistened, and separated. We spent the rest of the haunt searching high and low for our missing teammate (sorry, G!), while trying to survive ourselves. We wandered the halls, ducking in and out of classrooms. Despite being invited to partake in games that we would’ve certainly lost, we saw fit to keep moving. Between the ghouls and oppressive heat, we barely made it out! Thankfully, our team reunited outside – even if we were a little bloodied.
Tammy:
Detention is a word I heard quite often throughout my school years. Somehow, I even enjoyed the thrill of being in trouble back then. But the staff at Scareview Grave Schoul transformed that thrill into instant regret. I will never run through the halls or skip class again. If they catch me, they may come for me.
The moment we stepped into this school of terror, we knew it was no ordinary detention, and there would be no chance to nap. The air felt charged with menace as chaos erupted around us. Before we could get our bearings, our newest member, G, was snatched away, vanishing into the maze of shadowy corridors filled with screams. For the rest of the visit, we had no idea where they were or what the staff had planned for them. We were blasted with what I hope was filtered water, and some of us were even zip-tied together! Little did they know, I’m a bit of a Houdini. But the instant they realized I had slipped free, the ghouls seemed to turn their full attention on us.

At every turn, another crazed ghoul waited in the darkness, ready to spring from the gloom and send us scrambling. The halls twisted and narrowed around us as we raced up and down the stairs, never knowing what would be lurking beyond the next corner. Every distant footstep, sudden shadow, and creaking door kept us guessing. At one point, I was even hauled away in a speeding wheelchair, hurtling through the school while the walls blurred around me!
Finally, detention was almost over, but G was still missing. With the ghouls closing in, we made one last desperate dash for freedom and burst out of the school, some of us soaked, some bloody, and all of us reformed!
P.S. Guys, we found G alive! A little moist, but ALIVE!!
Bea:
I never did enjoy getting in trouble during my school days. Growing up, I had always been considered more of the goody-two-shoes type. So when I learned that TSF had been sentenced to detention, and on a SATURDAY!? I was mortified. Little did I know we were about to get Schouled.
When we arrived, we were greeted with a lengthy waiver. That’s when I knew we should have studied more. I quickly learned about their zero-tolerance policy for fun, smiling, and/or tomfoolery. My error was swiftly and painfully corrected by the boorish Scarecrow via baseball bat. After my ever-so “necessary” attitude adjustment, we were shoved into the chicken coop and hosed down with vile plunger water. From there, I was reminded so graciously of their policy, and due to my revel, I was zip-tied to my team member Tammy. At least Tammy had one hand free; I lost my privileges to use either of mine. As we sat in anticipation, we could hear Nora’s cries as the monsters whisked her away. Just as soon as we thought it was safe, they stormed into the coop and stole our teammate G. We were then forced to roam the hallowed halls of the Schoul until we found our friend, a way out, or until we learned our lesson. We didn’t have much of a fair view, but alas, the schoul children beckoned us to stay.

I’m not sure how we made it out alive; I’m not sure if we did. What I am sure of is that schoul is a labyrinth, and you better study before you get yourself into Detention. If not, you may never see the light of day or your friends and family ever again.
G:
Detention like you have never experienced before. This was my first-ever extreme haunt, and I was so nervous about it. But luckily, the school staff knew exactly what to do! Obviously, the best thing for my nerves was to separate me from my group and make me experience the whole haunt alone!
Taken from my group, screamed at, squirted with plunger water, forced to lie in a bed with weapons trained on me, forced to drink mystery shots, had my head bagged, zipped to a wall, and it was 106 degrees. SIGN ME UP AGAIN! I had the best introductory extreme haunt, and I want so badly to experience it again before the season ends. The crew at the Scareview Grave Schoul loves what they do, and that passion shows!
