Special Note for 2018:

We’ve changed the way we give scores for this year. We are now using a weighted average that puts more emphasis on certain features of the haunt (IE: “How scary was it,” versus “Does the haunt’s location authenticate their theme”). That said, these scores should NOT be used in comparisons to previous seasons. We appreciate your understanding. Thanks and Happy Haunting! –The Scare Factor

Special Effects (15%)
1: How effective were the sound effects? (20%) 6
I don’t remember a lot of sounds or music here. It may have been too muted or blended into the other noise, but this would be an area that could boost the overall theme and immersion of a haunt. In particular, I’m thinking of the Asylum based House of Insanity could use some louder chaotic music or screams seemingly from other parts of the building. Just something to enhance it to the next level.
2: How creative / original were the scenes & props? (20%) 7.5
3: How well were the scenes detailed? (20%) 8
4: How well did they achieve & maintain the suspension of disbelief? (25%) 7.88
Not so much on the hayride. Need to feel like I’m traveling through a particular place away from the regular world and that exists out in these woods and cornfields. The Killer Kornfield I was completed transported down the rabbit hole. Didn’t know where I was or what was going on, but just that we were encountering places and inhabitants of a world that seemed very real. The Barn wasn’t overly threatening enough to draw me in, perhaps lack of actors who will be there in the coming weeks would change that. House of Insanity I enjoyed immensely but maybe needed a higher level of immersion for that theme.
5: How effective were the SFX at providing scares / entertainment? (15%) 7.75
Special Effects Score: 7.43
Theme (5%)
1: Could you tell what the theme was? (30%) 9
2: How well was the theme carried throughout the attraction/s? (50%) 9
Even without the story, I got the theme just fine and I liked that it was all tied together.
3: How well does their location authenticate the theme? (20%) 9
Doesn’t get much more real than an actual farm, barns, and lots of corn.
Theme Score: 9
