Summary:
Having last visited The Fear Complex in its first season, we were excited to get back to the haunt to see how it had developed. That first year, the team only had a matter of months to flesh out the space, and they did an unbelievable job. This season, the haunt has more firmly taken root, insinuating itself deeper into the building and into haunt goers’ psyches!
Visitors really looking for a scary night for a great price should make sure to get the combo pass, which is good for admission to both The Fear Complex and its sister haunt, HellScream, just a short drive away!

Cast Review:
The Fear Complex cast was bursting with energy, such as a needled nurse who greeted us in the medical area, practically dripping with malevolence, and the pair of off-kilter cretins took us into the mines with a private, personalized performance as we “descended.” While the haunt would have benefited from a few more actors throughout to bring more life to the shadows and provide more distractions to set up some of the scares, the cast provided a wide variety of approaches. Some were aggressive and loud, others sweetly maleficent; some directly threatening, others giggling to one another about what would befall us. Combining the highly charged cast working their magic in the well-designed spaces results in a very entertaining and scary haunt!

Costuming Review:
The costumes at The Fear Complex are incredibly well done, fitting the respective scenes appropriately and with masks, makeup, and prosthetics, bringing the various characters to life. The same is true of the queue actors, including the dinosaur scientist holding a small surprise, the tallest clown we’ve ever seen, and the masked man who sparked attention as he slid at us. Sometimes, the darkness of the haunt, coupled with the cast’s deftness, made it a little difficult to make out a lot of the detail in the costumes, but when we had an opportunity to take in those details, they were unerringly impressive and unnerving.

Customer Service Review:
The customer service at The Fear Complex is spectacular. The friendly ticket taker provides a rundown on the rules, and another team of folks greets guests near the door, ensuring that the operation runs smoothly. After getting lost in the haunt and coming out the other end (assuming you do), visitors are greeted by a little more haunted decor in a short hallway leading to the gift shop. Both provide a great respite from the finale to catch one’s breath and offer an awesome variety of items, whether haunt-themed or just generally genre-appropriate.
Of course, finding information about the haunt is as simple as visiting its website, and getting to the haunt is a piece of cake. While there are a few spots that require a more sure foot or the ability to navigate a few slopes here and there. Even despite the visible signs of terrific horror, the haunt was perfectly safe.

Immersion Review:
The vibe at The Fear Complex is a little complicated. As guests approach, it’s obvious that one of the office buildings along Bijou Street is a little different than the rest. There are lights moving, faint sounds emanating, and a gigantic skeleton on top. The real party is out back, though, and begins to pick up almost immediately upon approaching the building. The Fear Complex features an awesome queue line, with multiple queue actors and photo ops lining the way.
The sense of immersion in the haunt was also outstanding. The medical scenes, for instance, perfectly incorporated the existing space that looked like it could have been a real doctor’s office, lending a sense of realism that’s hard to replicate. While there were the occasional instances of immersion being lowered or broken, they were pretty few and far between, returning us to the realm they designed.
The storyline, however, would benefit from some attention. The Fear Complex consists of four attractions all in one: The Sanitarium, Sinister Manor, The Haunted Mines and 3-D Carnival. Though there is certainly a thread of various phobias running through the four sections of The Fear Complex, it’s not clear on first blush. It was also a bit confusing finding that The Haunted Mines comes with a full-blown story, replete with enough faux detail (and hinting at the connection between it and HellScream) that the unwary could take it for truth. The other three attractions, however, are given no backstory whatsoever.

Special FX Review:
The special effects at The Fear Complex were pretty good. The sound was mostly provided by the cast or the audio of an animatronic, but there were some areas that featured special sound effects, such as the drilling sound that permeated the dentist’s office and the echoing drips in the mines. There are huge animatronics, there are small animatronics, and there are everything in between. Unfortunately, some of the animatronics are showing signs of age, having lost a step, but it’s nothing that a little TLC (and perhaps a new motor) can’t fix.
There’s also a lot more to The Fear Complex’s special effects than just animatronics, though. The ride down to the mines provided a great opportunity to enjoy the two-man show that we got, and the pathway into the mines from there allowed guests to peer over the side into the deep black abyss below. The clown area also sets itself apart with the use of 3-D glasses and paint, giving the entire area a distorted feel that’s really cool to behold in person. The experiment we were nearly caught up in also featured one of the coolest, most unique special effects we’ve seen in some time. As for the sets, everything we encountered was designed well and full of detail. The realistic equipment, furniture, and medical records further legitimize that area of the haunt, while small details work to complete a world of fear.

Scare Factor Review:
The Fear Complex scares were dynamic, playing into its name and hitting all the fears one can conjure. Terror could be in the form of the space you were in or from the cast. When the cast wasn’t providing a scare, an animatronic was. The cast did a great job scaring all of our group, and doing so in a variety of ways, including a good ol’ fashioned caged beating we got to witness as we walked by.
At times, some scares were more forthcoming and even predictable. However, that’s an easy fix, providing a little more distraction so no one makes eye contact with a beast lying in wait. The finale is really fun and unique in its structure. After leaving the glowing neon 3-D carnival area, the vibe becomes much darker. Guests soon find out why and that they have but one way to go!

E&V Review:
The Fear Complex is an enormous good time and a great value, coming in at just around a dollar per minute, running for approximately 25 minutes. Haunt goers can make the most of their cash and buy a combo pass, which is good for admission to both The Fear Complex and its sister haunt, HellScream!
Adding in the fun and free photo ops in the queue line and the general atmosphere on the way out of the haunt, there’s a lot of fun to be had both inside and out. Make plans to visit The Fear Complex this season! If you escape, you won’t regret it!
