One of the biggest bonuses for visiting The Nefarious Haunt Experience is that it takes place at Grayhaven Winery in Gum Spring, Virginia. And trust us, the wine here is SO good! After making your way through the darkness, you can reward yourself with a glass of their wonderful wine while enjoying the festive atmosphere and seasonal treats. Guests can warm up by the fire pits, make s’mores, and grab snacks, hot soup, goodies, and non-alcoholic drinks, along with wine for those 21 and older. It’s a fun way to unwind after the experience, especially if you need a minute to recover from everything you just went through!
We also must give a special shoutout to Mark Quesenberry, the mastermind behind The Nefarious Haunt Experience, and his wife Shannon, who is always there to welcome guests and check them in. These two are genuinely some of the nicest people we have met since we started reviewing haunted attractions. Their hospitality is outstanding, and you can tell they truly care about their guests and want everyone to have the best possible experience. That personal touch goes a long way, and we absolutely love seeing people who put so much heart into what they do.
Now, let’s talk about where we think there is room for improvement. This is their second year at the Grayhaven Winery location, and while the winery itself has plenty of charm, finding the haunt and knowing you’ve arrived could use some work. The drive through this rural area is already dark and spooky, which sets the stage for a haunted attraction perfectly! However, there is very little signage specifically directing guests to The Nefarious Haunt Experience. While you can spot signs for the winery, adding signs advertising the haunt along the road could help attract additional visitors who might otherwise never know it’s there.
Once you arrive, we would love to see more signage identifying the haunted attraction itself. Now, there isn’t much to let you know you’ve arrived at a haunt rather than simply a winery. Adding some spooky props, atmospheric lighting, and themed decorations around the entrance and exterior would go a long way toward establishing the experience before guests even step onto the trail. The interior of the trail delivers the horror, so we’d love to see that same attention to atmosphere carry over to the outside.
We also think the website could use some attention. Currently, information about the haunt is included on the winery’s website, and we would love to see The Nefarious Haunt Experience have a dedicated website of its own. Their previous website had a much stronger haunted attraction feel and allowed guests to book their entry times directly. Timed tickets are still available, but finding the booking information on the winery’s webpage is a little more confusing than it needs to be. A dedicated website with a spooky design, clear details about the experience, ticket options, and a straightforward booking process would give the haunt a stronger online presence and make it easier for potential guests to plan their visit. Their social media pages are kept up to date and do a much better job capturing the haunted atmosphere, so definitely check those out for the latest information!
Once you’ve checked in, there are a few things to enjoy while waiting for your time slot, including the wine, seasonal snacks, fire pits, s’mores, and a small area selling Nefarious merchandise. However, we would love to see more entertainment added to the waiting area. We mentioned this last year, and it’s something we still think could make a big difference. Whether it’s spooky movies playing, live music or a DJ, or even some ghouls roaming around interacting with guests, adding entertainment would give people more to enjoy before their scheduled experience. With such a great setting at the winery, there is a real opportunity to turn the entire evening into an event rather than having the trail be the only main attraction.
And we must mention one final little bonus: the animals! Grayhaven Winery has animals on the property, and seeing the horses after making it through the haunt is always a fun way to end the night. You might even get the chance to meet some of the winery dogs, including the memorable Pazuzu!
Overall, the hospitality at The Nefarious Haunt Experience is a definite highlight, and Mark and Shannon make guests feel genuinely welcome. We would love to see the exterior atmosphere, signage, website, and waiting-area entertainment receive a little more attention to match the creativity and intensity of the experience itself. There is so much potential here to create a complete evening of spooky fun, and with a few additions, the entire visit could be just as memorable as the trail!
