Hellsgate Haunted House – Lockport, Illinois

HellsGate Haunted House in Lockport turns getting to the haunt into part of the adventure. After taking a shuttle bus into the woods, guests make their way through outdoor trails, a haunted cemetery, a massive mausoleum, and eventually the towering, multi-level HellsGate mansion. The experience has become known for its huge cast, elaborate environments, and actors who keep the intensity going from the woods all the way through the house. And of course, there’s a slide! If you find the key, your ticket is free!
HellsGate is celebrating its 10th birthday in 2026, and this year’s additions include a brand-new 19-foot-high Clown Carousel. With more than 150 live actors, an outdoor-to-indoor journey, and a Monster Midway waiting after the haunt, this is one of those attractions designed to feel like an entire Halloween destination rather than a quick walkthrough.
Opening night: September 24
Know Before You Go: Parking is off-site at 301 W. 2nd St. in Lockport, and shuttle buses take guests to the haunt; arrive early because bus lines can get long on Fridays and Saturdays. Covered waiting, food vendors, drinks, bar, games, photo ops, gift shop, escape rooms, and more are available in the Monster Midway. No-touch attraction.

The Massacre Haunted House in Montgomery packs a massive amount of horrors under one roof, with more than 35,000 square feet, dozens of rooms, large-scale effects, detailed environments, and scares coming from both actors and elaborate effects, making this one of the scariest haunts in the state!
There’s also a major reason for returning guests to come back in 2026. The Massacre has replaced its former 3D attraction with The Asylum, an all-new 3,000-square-foot expansion featuring new sets, effects, and live actors. Our 2025 team praised Massacre for its highly detailed rooms, impressive animatronics, strong cast, and sheer amount of attraction packed into the building. And that elevator… It really moves!

Realm of Terror Haunted House – Round Lake Beach, Illinois

Realm of Terror Haunted House in Round Lake Beach mixes aggressive live actors, detailed environments, practical effects, and a darker old-school haunt feel with modern production. The attraction has developed its own identity over more than two decades, and horror fans may recognize parts of the property from the movie Haunt Season, which used Realm of Terror as the filming location!
For 2026, Realm of Terror enters its 24th season, with its main haunted attraction joined by the nightly Terror Awakens opening ceremony and a property full of other things to do before and after the haunt. One of our favorite guest-friendly features is their virtual waiting system, which lets General Admission guests enjoy the surrounding entertainment instead of spending the entire night stuck in a traditional standing queue.
Opening night: October 3
Know Before You Go: Virtual waiting line for General Admission, free on-site and overflow parking, midway, bar, games, escape rooms, gift shop, food, bowling, arcade, and mini golf available at Kristof’s Entertainment Center. Online admission includes access to the Monster Museum.

Midnight Terror Haunted House – Oak Lawn, Illinois

Midnight Terror Haunted House in Oak Lawn has built an entire world around the cursed town of Black Oak Grove, blending a continuing storyline with detailed sets, high-energy actors, and plenty of classic Halloween atmosphere. Guests move through several themed attraction areas where the story, characters, and environments evolve throughout the walkthrough, rather than feeling like a collection of unrelated rooms.
For 2026, Midnight Terror is introducing all-new attraction areas and scare zones, including Black Oak Grove Hallows Eve, ShadowTek Corporation, Laugh & Slash Carnival, and Rotten Hallows. The Sinister Sideshow Midway and Artist Alley give guests even more to explore outside the main haunt, with games, entertainment, local horror artists, photo opportunities, and other activities adding to the night.
Opening night: September 25
Know Before You Go: Located about five minutes from I-294, midway with axe throwing, carnival games, fast escape rooms, large photo ops, concessions, entertainment, and Artist Alley. Disturbia Haunted Attraction – Downers Grove, Illinois

Disturbia Haunted Attraction in Downers Grove delivers a densely packed indoor haunt where detailed scenes, energetic actors, effects, and elaborate character looks seem to fill nearly every available space. During our 2025 visit, the experience started well before we entered, with sliders, stilt walkers, a DJ, and roaming characters creating a lively atmosphere outside before the cast continued the pressure throughout the attraction.
Disturbia is especially strong for guests who enjoy actor-heavy haunts where the characters are just as memorable as the scenery. The attraction also hosts special events outside the regular Halloween season, giving fans opportunities to return for different versions of the experience throughout the year.
Know Before You Go: All-indoor haunt, free public parking, concession stand with food and drinks, merch available, covered waiting area used during heavy rain, and the attraction recommends ages 13+. No-touch attraction.

Factory of Fear – Moline, Illinois

Factory of Fear in Moline uses its industrial setting to its advantage, sending guests through a huge collection of grimy, weathered environments filled with rust, metal, distressed surfaces, actors, and effects that feel right at home inside the property. The attraction has been scaring guests since 1994 and now features two haunted experiences spread across multiple floors and more than 70 rooms.
Admission includes both Factory of Fear and Fear Underground, giving guests a lengthy journey through the building and a wide variety of scenes along the way. Our 2025 visit lasted around 30 minutes and stood out for the way the haunt embraced its gritty factory atmosphere while packing the attraction with actors, props, and immersive detail.
Know Before You Go: Both haunts are included with admission, all-indoor attraction, indoor waiting, free parking, large gift shop, many off-season events

Twisted Crypt Productions – Rockford, Illinois

Twisted Crypt Productions in Rockford approaches haunting differently than most attractions on this list. Instead of relying on a constant forward-moving stream of quick scares, Twisted Crypt frequently stops groups inside dedicated scenes where characters can interact, improvise, tell pieces of the story, and make the guests part of what is happening around them.
That slower, scene-based format helps prevent the dreaded conga line while giving the members of the twisted Duson family plenty of time to get acquainted with their visitors. During our 2025 visit, some encounters lasted several minutes, making this a particularly good choice for guests who enjoy interactive characters and theatrical scenes rather than nonstop pop scares.
Opening night: September 18 for a one night only Twisted Darkness event
Know Before You Go: All-indoor, climate-controlled attraction, covered waiting area when the line extends outside, free parking, wheelchair- and mobility-scooter-accessible

Basement of the Dead – Aurora, Illinois

Basement of the Dead in downtown Aurora combines two very different haunted experiences beneath one roof. The main Basement of the Dead attraction drops guests into a grim underground laboratory filled with aggressive characters, detailed scenes, and high-energy scares, while Shattered 3D changes the atmosphere with a much more colorful and disorienting visual experience.
For 2026, Basement of the Dead is promoting a new beginning with new rooms and new scares, giving even regular visitors a reason to return. Our 2025 visit found a compact but hard-hitting attraction with actors seemingly everywhere, detailed environments, and a fast pace that kept the energy high throughout both haunts.
Opening night: September 19
Know Before You Go: Concessions, haunt operates rain or shine, covered waiting is available during extreme rain, recommended for ages 13+, and no-touch. Free public parking is available nearby; the Hollywood Casino garage may charge unless you qualify for its parking validation.

Dungeon of Doom Haunted House – Zion, Illinois

Dungeon of Doom Haunted House in Zion is one of Illinois’ longest-running large-scale haunts, and 2026 marks its 30th season of sending guests deep into the scares! The attraction has built its reputation around a huge indoor experience filled with multiple themed areas, original characters, large sets, effects, and a walkthrough designed to keep guests inside much longer than the typical quick haunt. The last time we visited, we were in there for over an hour!
Part of Dungeon of Doom’s identity comes from its recurring Killer Crew and recognizable characters who return year after year, giving longtime fans familiar faces while new scenes and scares continue to evolve around them. For anyone looking for a marathon-style haunted attraction with decades of history, Dungeon of Doom is an Illinois staple worth keeping on the radar.
Opening night: September 26
Know Before You Go: All-indoor attraction, free parking, actors may touch guests during the experience, and they offer four ticketing options: General, Fast Pass, V.I.P., and Platinum. They also host off-season events.
5 Points Haunted House – West Chicago, Illinois

5 Points Haunted House in West Chicago takes over a 100-plus-year-old barn, and the age and character of the building immediately give the haunt an atmosphere that would be difficult to recreate inside a modern warehouse. Across two floors and approximately 15,000 square feet, guests encounter more than 30 actors, detailed environments, giant animatronics, and scares designed to come from multiple directions.
The attraction has come a long way from its home-haunt roots, and in 2026 the property is also offering Ritual Escape, a private 60-minute escape room available beyond the traditional Halloween haunt season (not open when the haunt is). Our 2025 team especially enjoyed how the actors used distraction, dialogue, and the building’s detailed environments to keep guests guessing throughout the walkthrough.
Know Before You Go: Free on-site parking with overflow parking nearby, food trucks are available on many nights, buying tickets online guarantees entry while walk-ups may be turned away on busy nights, and Fridays and earlier-season dates are generally less crowded than peak Saturdays.
