Summary

What happens when a small city’s recreation department decides to lean into the season? Just ask Cañon City, Colorado, who decided that bringing some terror to its trails was the answer. And they were right! Aftermath is an incredibly fun, intense haunt located near the Cañon City Recreation and Parks District building just off of the Arkansas River. What begins as a peaceful walk in the woods quickly turns into a topsy-turvey trot through scene after scene of scares!

Guest Experience9.24

Getting to Aftermath is as simple as using your map app of choice. Google Maps even allows guests to search the haunt’s name and it will get you there with ease. With ample parking in the lot, visitors make their way to the line that starts forming even before the haunt opens, which is fortunately served by a snackbar booth that offers simple fare for folks in line. Once guests make it to the tent at the top of the path, the fun really begins, but make sure you have your tickets by then, which can be bought from the… Read More…

Immersion7.7

Between the woods and the fact that the haunt is staged further down the trail than one can see, the hauntgoers are treated to some fun music and the beauty of the area until the haunt begins. A dedicated queue line actor or two could really pump up the experience, but even without, the vibe in the line is electric, as visitors clamor with excitement and laughter, enjoying the slower pace of the area while looking forward to what awaits in the woods. This season seemed to embrace a Purge-like theme, sounding an audio clip announcing the temporary legality of… Read More…

Special Effects8.01

When most folks think of special effects, they’re usually thinking of things made of metal, motors, and wires, but Aftermath has other ideas too, utilizing some simple mechanisms such as momentum, slides, and small spaces to aid the electronics. Even as the cast provides the majority of the auditory elements from the shadows, it’s not to say that Aftermath is lacking any of the usual special effects. Some spaces provide subtle but effective ambient sound and the lighting is done well enough that the darkness acts as an entity of its own. There are also enough animatronics and scary effects… Read More…

Characters8.2

The cast of Aftermath is composed of volunteers from the local community, which makes the cast’s performance all the more impressive. Each cast member has a unique look ranging from simple masks and robes to full makeup and costumes from head to toe. Regardless of costume, though, the cast’s performances were uniformly remarkable. Some actors offered subtle performances while others provided the high energy action that sends hearts into throats. One of the most memorable monstrosities started by scaring us with a large handsaw before revealing his unearthly identity and switching to a chainsaw for the rest of the chase! Read More…

Scare Factor8.13

Given the eclectic collection of creeps roaming the trail, there’s truly something to scare everyone. Our group of five was set upon regardless of its size, no one being safe from the cast’s crosshairs. Darkness, disorientation, booming sounds and shouts, special effects, and that dedicated cast come together to give guests a terrifying twenty minutes of frightful fun. And the finale came out of the blue to send us to the end with a start! Without giving things away, keep in mind that Aftermath will let you know when it’s done with you!

Value8.56

General admission to Aftermath is $20, with fast passes being available for $40. However, with the haunt running approximately 20 minutes, hauntgoers can expect just over a minute of haunt per dollar, which is an incredible ratio in Colorado. With all the entertainment that’s packed into that 20 minutes, Cañon City (and all Southern Colorado) haunt lovers would be doing themselves a favor by taking a trip to Aftermath!
