“Taylor!” “No, my name is Bethany. She’s in the back.” Sorry I lied; I was indeed upfront. Some of the lighting effects were genuinely mesmerizing. One standout was a tree that appeared to be covered in millions of fireflies, creating a striking visual that was difficult not to admire. The set designs were another highlight, drawing inspiration from classic horror films in ways that went beyond simply recreating scenes. Some areas appeared pulled straight from the movies, while others captured the essence and aesthetic of a film, incorporating recognizable characters into environments that suited them. For example, Jackal from Thirteen Ghosts appeared in a setting that fit his character, even though it wasn’t a direct recreation of a scene from the movie. These creative choices helped bring the world of horror cinema into the attraction without relying solely on exact replicas.
The variety of practical effects also kept the experience unpredictable. Trapdoors, winding mazes and harsh turns, hallways constructed of airbags, and a disorienting spinning tunnel each offered a different physical reaction as we moved through the attraction. These elements added variety to the walkthrough and demonstrated how creative design and well-executed effects can be just as impactful as elaborate animatronics. One of the favorites was trapping the group in a smaller room where a door closed behind us, a spider came falling, only for the escape to knock on the door ahead.
Overall, the attraction made excellent use of its effects, combining soundtracks, lighting, construction, and cinematic inspiration to create an experience that was visually engaging and consistently kept us guessing.
