This haunt made the wise choice of investing in solid props, creative lighting, creative soundscapes, and strong actors instead of trying to load the trail with animatronics. In fact, I don’t think we saw a single animatronic during our time on the trail, and to be honest, not having them may have enhanced the experience. Some props and scenes were detailed and realistic, while some props felt more off the shelf and some scenes felt light on details. For example, several dead body props were fairly realistic, but the skeletons really could have used some work to make them look realistic.
While many rooms and trail sections didn’t have a lot of detail, we appreciated the naturalistic approach to creating “hallways” in the trail. They used lattices, fences, corrugated metal, and hanging “laundry” to create a lot of the walls within, which made the whole experience feel more immersive than simply using plywood walls (though there were a few stretches of black walls as well). We also appreciated the details they added above several scenes, using greenery and other hanging items to help extend the scene upward.
Sometimes less is more with a soundscape, and this haunt used this idea brilliantly. Scareactors whispered menacingly at us from behind walls and trellises, whistled as they stalked us, and rustled bushes throughout. If there were loud, blaring music, it wouldn’t have allowed for those intimate sound-based moments. There were also neat little sound effects like birds cawing to help interrupt the quiet of the trail while building the world of the haunt. Of course, there were also some loud blasts of an airhorn from their Joker character to mix things up. It didn’t necessarily fit into the moody soundscape they were building (nor did the Ghostbusters theme in the clown disco room), but it definitely made an impact.
Lighting was also used well to distinguish scenes, and we applaud their laser swamp, which was quite effective for hiding the scareactor within. Fog was used sparingly but tactically throughout the haunt, and a few characters even carried lanterns to scare with light.
