Scoring Criteria Transition: 2026 sits right at a change in our review categories and weighting, so this score isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison to reviews from nearby years under different criteria; worth keeping in mind if you’re tracking a haunt’s rating over time.

Summary

There is nothing quite like Albuquerque during October. The scent of roasting chile and pinion fills the air, the leaves are changing, and the locals embrace the spooky vibe.  Throughout the month, there are several events, ghost tours, and haunted attractions.  Below 505 Food Hall lies Haunted Scarecrow, which offers several different haunts throughout the year.  During the Halloween season, Haunted Scarecrow is called the Depths of Despair.

Guest Experience9.4

Locating 505 Food Hall and Haunted Scarecrow is easy. The website has great directions and even gives parking suggestions. We had no problem finding the haunt using our GPS. There is no dedicated haunt parking, but there are parking meters and paid parking nearby.  Walking up to 505 Food Hall, there is clear signage pointing guests to the haunted house.  The staff and security were very friendly and happy to answer any questions.  There is a clearly marked table for the haunt with merchandise for sale where you can buy your ticket; the haunt is located behind the table and… Read More…

Immersion6.44

Once you make your way to the basement of the food hall, you enter the themed waiting area. There are sets and props as well as a very active actor.  There is no specific theme throughout the haunt, each room has a different theme.  The rooms and hallways help the themes flow together.  Themes range from swamps, voodoo bayou, and the circus, to name a few. Throughout our walkthrough, we did not have any break in the theming and immersion from beginning to end.

Special Effects5.38

Haunted Scarecrow does not have a soundtrack that we could notice.  There were a few sound effects to go with some of the moving props as well as the noises the actors made.  As we journeyed through the haunt, the sets had good detail. We noticed a lot of the scenery was handmade.  There were no animatronics we could see, but throughout the haunt there were several one-of-a-kind, handmade, actor-operated props we had never seen before.  Lighting was good throughout the haunt; each scene was lit enough to see the details.  There were also a few strobe lights we noticed.

Characters5.23

Many ghouls and creatures haunt the basement of the food hall.  Once we defended ourselves, we were greeted by a shocking actor before we even read the rules.  The actors did a good job with using the space for scares.  We kept encountering the same characters who appeared and disappeared at will.  Most of the actors we encountered were creative with their scares. The sparking character we encountered literally crawled on the wall to get us.  Elsewhere, we encountered a creepy clown with some very detailed makeup.  Each character we interacted with had unique responses and dialogue, while some made… Read More…

Scare Factor4.98

While waiting to enter the haunt, guests can hear screams coming from the basement.  Throughout our walkthrough, we had a few scares, mostly of the stalking or jump-scare variety.  Some actors did not go for the scare or only scared one member of our group. Although a few of the scares were predictable, there were a few actor-driven props that gave us a good scare.  The book of the dead puppet on the wall and the handmade dragon head definitely caught us off guard. Most actors either worked with others to scare our group or went after most of us… Read More…

Value5.42

With a cost of $20.00 admission, no FastPass options, and a walkthrough time of 11 minutes, that brings them to only 0.55 MPD (minutes of entertainment received per dollar spent).  This is a good value for an indoor haunt in this area, but nationwide it’s on the low end.

Haunted Scarecrow also has haunts throughout the year with different holiday themes.  If you are in Albuquerque or New Mexico and want a good indoor haunt with some great food and drink options, we recommend checking out Haunted Scarecrow for a frightfully good time.
