Scoring Criteria Transition: 2026 sits right at a change in our review categories and weighting, so this score isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison to reviews from nearby years under different criteria; worth keeping in mind if you’re tracking a haunt’s rating over time.

Summary

Lake Joy Trails of Terror is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit haunt dedicated to raising money to help offset medical expenses for local children fighting critical illnesses, while also supporting others in need. For 16 seasons, the owners have stood behind their motto, “We scare because we care,” bringing frightful thrills to guests while giving back to the community. The haunt features two separate outdoor trails, Salem Woods and Blood Run, each offering its own distinct atmosphere and style of scares.

Guest Experience9.55

Lake Joy Trails of Terror was easy to find, although the sign along the main road was a little difficult to spot at night due to limited lighting. Once on-site, guests will find a large, free parking area with attendants available to help direct traffic. The spacious midway features a variety of food and merchandise vendors, several roaming actors to entertain guests in the queue areas, and even a pair of fire artists performing during our visit. A DJ kept the midway lively with music and announcements about attraction openings, although the dance-party atmosphere felt a little different from the… Read More…

Immersion8.39

The immersion at Lake Joy Trails of Terror begins before guests even reach the attractions, with a showcase of scenes built by local home haunters just beyond the ticket booth. This display leads into the expansive midway, where guests can explore the vendors and entertainment before heading into the trails. Salem Woods sets the stage with an impressive entrance facade featuring an elaborate projection-mapped display, followed by a secondary queue inside a witch hut where the rules are explained before guests head out into the woods. Along the trail, we encountered a variety of unusual environments, including slanted hallways, low… Read More…

Special Effects8.14

Both trails at Lake Joy Trails of Terror featured a variety of special effects, with each taking a different approach to atmosphere. Fog was used in several areas throughout both attractions, adding an eerie layer to the outdoor environments. Salem Woods offered an interesting twist on the traditional laser swamp by replacing the usual green lasers with red ones and angling the path to make guests feel as though they were being funneled into a dark tunnel. Audio effects were relatively minimal along this trail, although sounds from the DJ and nearby midway and parking areas were occasionally noticeable. Blood… Read More…

Characters8.41

The characters were plentiful on both trails at Lake Joy Trails of Terror, although Blood Run felt a little more heavily populated. Salem Woods featured a variety of witches, a Voodoo Shaman, voodoo creatures, nuns, and other characters scattered throughout the experience. Performers appeared in nearly every scene, with some areas featuring multiple actors, though a few of the stretches between scenes could have benefited from additional encounters. While the character types weren’t especially varied, many performers brought their own personalities to their roles through their movements and interactions with us. Still, we heard the familiar “move faster” and “get… Read More…

Scare Factor8.24

There were scares to be found around nearly every corner of both trails at Lake Joy Trails of Terror, with a mix of interactive encounters and more traditional pop-outs and sudden yells. Some characters took the time to engage with our group, making certain encounters feel more personal, while others relied on familiar scare techniques to catch us off guard. As their names might suggest, Salem Woods was the spookier of the two trails, leaning into a creepy atmosphere, while Blood Run delivered a more intense and considerably bloodier experience. Both trails eventually lead to the same exit area, where… Read More…

Value7.39

Our total walkthrough time for both trails was 27 minutes, and the general admission combo ticket cost $40. This works out to an MPD (minutes per dollar) ratio of 0.68, which falls within the typical range for many haunted attractions in our area (though lower than the nationwide average of 1). Beyond the trails themselves, Lake Joy offers additional entertainment and photo opportunities on the midway, including interactions with roaming actors and, on the night of our visit, fire performers. These extras provide guests with more to enjoy before or after their walkthrough, adding to the overall experience beyond the scares alone.
