Cast Review:

The cast in The Homestead were interactive, something that we have grown accustomed to in a full contact haunt. Instead of following a path, it felt as though we were being guided through the experience by a character who handed us off to other characters. Upon entering, we were greeted by a “friendly” character who set the stage with a playful introduction about what to expect. Once inside, we found ourselves in the parlor of a witch who began telling our fortunes, just before demons emerged from the shadows. The characters then dragged us from room to room, creating this sense of chaos. Just as we were pulled into a scene, we were being pulled out of it and placed into another. Our favorite character was a patient who stayed with us just before one of our group was whisked away. This same character pulled us out of a room and insisted that one of us sing Katy Perry while we waited.

In The Way Down, we had hoods over our heads that blocked our vision. Due to the nature of this type of experience, we didn’t get much time with any one actor and prolonged interaction was limited. There were moments when it felt like there should have been an actor in a couple of spaces. However, generally, there were enough to keep us on our toes.

Slaughterhouse was all about jump scares which is something that can get one of our team members every time. (We know it is kind of ironic.) Major props go to the chainsaw actors in the Slaughterhouse. There were more of them than we anticipated and their placements throughout the haunt kept us on our toes. However, similar to The Way Down, there were a few areas where we felt an actor could have enhanced the energy even further, keeping our adrenaline pumping.

Costuming Review:

The costuming across all the haunts was consistent. We were particularly surprised by the costumes in The Way Down. Since the hoods limited our visibility, we didn’t expect the actors to be costumed. It wasn’t until we sat down to write this review that we realized a few actors were indeed in costume and makeup. There was a notable variety of masks, alongside characters with solid makeup, although prosthetics were not used. Overall, every character we met fit well into their respective scenes, with no instances of mismatched themes or costumes.

While the character costuming was generally solid, there were some inconsistencies between the queue line actors and those we encountered within the haunts. Though this is quite common; we were hoping for more standout costume designs within the main attractions. There were two standout characters that we encountered in the scare zone: a feathered druid and a pumpkin faced creature. The druid was adorned in feathers and fur, leering at us ominously from behind a beautiful headdress. The pumpkin faced creature resembled a tall, gaunt monster draped in vines, topped with a warped jack-o’-lantern head.

Customer Service Review:

Our visit to Maan Farms was enjoyable, thanks to the helpful and accommodating staff. The website is well organized, providing information about the days the haunt is open, ticket prices, and a FAQ section to help prepare you for your visit. You can either buy tickets online or pay at the ticket booth. (The ticket booth is located on the opposite side of the farm from the parking lot for those of you planning to visit. We had to ask one of the attendants.) Speaking of the parking, there was a lot of parking available the night that we visited although many chose to park along the surrounding streets. Parking might be more difficult later in the season when there are more visitors.

We arrived just as the farm was transitioning from its daytime activities to the nighttime haunt. Initially, we needed to ask for directions during this transition, but the signage was soon put up, allowing us to navigate the farm with ease.

Maan Farms offered a variety of food options, featuring both traditional fare and Indian inspired dishes. You can get anything from a hot dog to buttered chicken naan. One highlight for us was the ice cream that was crafted right on site. Among the flavors available, the apple ice cream was a standout, piled into a carved out apple. The pumpkin ice cream was similarly served in a charming mini pumpkin. Either made for a perfect Instagram worthy photo.

Immersion Review:

The haunts at Maan Farms are separated from the other festivities, creating a distinct atmosphere once we went into the scare zone. As we entered, we found ourselves immersed in a field of tall corn, which added to the sense of isolation—a feeling that enhanced our experience positively. In the distance, we could hear chainsaws roaring and an array of unsettling noises that heightened the suspense. This isolation was effective, emphasizing that we had stepped into a different world, far removed from the cheerful activities of the farm. Each attraction featured elaborate facades that blended into the cornfield, drawing us deeper into the immersive experience as we approached the haunts.

Special FX Review:

The scenes were primarily actor driven, creating a dynamic atmosphere filled with surprises. In The Homestead, we began our journey by navigating through a cornfield leading to a witch’s house. One of our favorite moments was in the smoke and mirrors room, where we had to search for a hidden door to escape. Our tension escalated as we witnessed a large saw that cut a poor actor in half, while another teammate found themselves trapped in a box with a pole seemingly shoved through them. The Way Down stood out for its use of multi sensory experiences, incorporating unsettling sounds and tactile changes through the rope that guided us.

As we moved into the Slaughterhouse, we were greeted by an eerie atmosphere created by ominous red lighting that set the tone perfectly. Our favorite scene featured a clown area adorned with white plastic flags hanging around waist height. This unique setup was simple yet effective, requiring us to push through the flags and provided ample opportunities for actors to leap out and startle us.

Scare Factor Review:

Both The Homestead and Slaughterhouse kept us on edge, eagerly anticipating the next jump scare. In The Homestead, the experience was particularly thrilling when one of our teammates was pulled away, only for us to later discover them being tortured in a different scene. It was both exciting and unsettling to see where our group members ended up. When you were drawn into another scene, it felt like you were receiving a one-on-one scare experience with all the actors focused on you.

In Slaughterhouse, the haunt delivered solid jump scares and jarring noises that targeted our entire group. Chainsaws, a staple of haunted attractions, stood out to us as particularly effective in this haunt. The chainsaws were prevalent throughout, creating a constant backdrop of tension as we navigated the attraction.

E&V Review:

On the night we visited, the combo ticket for all three attractions was priced at $90 CAD (approximately $65.42 USD). We spent about 43 minutes inside the haunts. However, this time doesn’t account for our experience in the scare zone or the time spent waiting in line, which brought our total visit time to around an hour. Keep in mind that line waits are likely to increase as the season progresses.

In addition to the haunts, Maan Farms offers a variety of festive activities. We previously mentioned the food options, but there’s also a County Market where you can purchase products made on the farm, along with fun novelties. If you enjoy wine, there is a tasting room in the market where you can sample wines created right there on the farm, or even grab an IV “blood” bag to sip on.

With so much to experience, we can’t wait for our next visit to Maan Farms Haunted Maze. Don’t miss out on the thrills (and flavors) this season—come see for yourself what makes Maan Farms so special.
