Scoring Criteria Transition: 2026 sits right at a change in our review categories and weighting, so this score isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison to reviews from nearby years under different criteria; worth keeping in mind if you’re tracking a haunt’s rating over time.

Disclosure: The author(s) of this review received free or comped tickets from Portals of Fear in exchange for this review. Despite this, The Scare Factor remains committed to providing our honest, unbiased assessment of every attraction to help you make informed decisions.

Summary

Buckle up, new DIU (Demonic Investigation Unit) agents! We’ve got a demon named Rulos on the loose, and he’s opened up a series of portals that need investigating. Your mission? Discover these portals, uncover what’s going on, and track down Rulos before it’s too late! Portals of Fear is a newer attraction entering its second year as a professional haunt, but you’d never know it. Walking through this haunt for the first time, you’d think it had been around for a decade! This was actually one of the attractions we were most excited to check out this season. Knowing it… Read More…

Guest Experience9.05

Before heading out to Portals of Fear, make sure you plug in the address for the parking lot rather than the haunted house itself, as there is no general parking available on-site. The only parking at the haunt is reserved for guests renting out The Raven Room. If you accidentally enter the haunt’s address instead, don’t worry! There are signs with arrows directing you to the correct parking lot. Once you arrive, you’ll notice the lot is illuminated by large generator-powered lights, with a parking attendant directing guests where to park. After finding your spot, head over to the white… Read More…

Immersion9.12

Starting with the exterior, Portals of Fear has lighting illuminating the building, helping transform what would otherwise look like an old school into something that feels more like a haunted attraction. Honestly, there’s only so much they can do with the exterior since they’re working with a permanent structure, but we think they make the most of what they have. The entertainment and atmosphere throughout the midway more than make up for any limitations the building itself presents. One of the things that impressed us most about Portals of Fear was the depth of its storyline. The narrative is surprisingly… Read More…

Special Effects9.05

Last year, we suggested that Portals of Fear turn up the sound in certain areas, as we felt a few sections were lacking in that department. This year, it seemed like they took that feedback to heart and increased the volume, and we absolutely appreciated the improvement! The soundtracks throughout the entire attraction sounded fantastic, from the first floor to the second floor and all the way down into the basement. Everything felt well-balanced and helped bring each area to life. Our favorite sound design, however, had to be in the basement. The audio down there was incredibly creepy and… Read More…

Characters9.63

Where the HELL do we even start?! These are some of the best actors we’ve seen in a haunt, and from start to finish, every single one delivered one hell of a performance. Portals of Fear absolutely knocked it out of the park when it came to its characters, acting, and overall immersion! As you begin your experience, you’ll encounter a DIU agent in the small queue line area who explains what you’re up against and what you’ll need to do if the entity comes after you. We absolutely loved the high-tech glasses they wore, which immediately helped establish the… Read More…

Scare Factor9.14

Last year, Portals of Fear was ranked as the scariest haunt in Pennsylvania, and this year, it’s clear why it earned that title! We absolutely loved the scares throughout the entire attraction, and they delivered some fantastic double-tap scares that caught us completely off guard. For those unfamiliar with the term, a double-tap scare is when two actors scare you simultaneously or back-to-back, or when one actor distracts you while another sneaks in for the scare. Portals of Fear executes this technique exceptionally well, keeping you on your toes and making it nearly impossible to know where the next scare… Read More…

Value8.09

Tickets for Portals of Fear start at $30 for General Admission, $40 for Fast Pass, and $50 for Immediate Access. During our visit, we spent 25.5 minutes inside the attraction, bringing our MPD (Minutes Per Dollar) to 0.85 based on the $30 General Admission price. Would we like to see that number reach at least 1.0? Absolutely! However, Portals of Fear delivers such an amazing experience that it honestly feels like you spend much longer inside than you actually do. The immersive storyline, detailed scenes, creative effects, and continuous entertainment help make those 25.5 minutes feel packed with memorable moments.… Read More…

The different take on a Haunted House. You actually cross into Portals. This changes the scene. It is a huge change from just black thick trash bags. ... Read More

Suggested Improvements:
It was their first year open and they pretty much hit a homerun. Just little touchups here and there that I am sure that has already been completed.
