The characters are where Slaughterhouse really shines.
Kilrush, near the front of the attraction, was extremely engaging and had great makeup. The character immediately helped establish the tone and made the normal haunt instructions more entertaining.
We also encountered a fortune teller who let us pick our own tarot cards before giving us our fate. The interaction was funny and memorable, especially when he joked that he had trained on YouTube. It was a great example of an actor taking a relatively simple character concept and turning it into an actual interaction with the guests.
The movie characters throughout the haunt are particularly interesting because they serve as an homage to the owner’s own horror acting career. You’ll encounter recognizable characters such as Michael Myers, Jason, and Ghostface. These appearances add another layer to the attraction and give horror fans something familiar to look for.
The actors also brought some creative elements of their own. Several characters had unique noises or sounds they made, while others incorporated props with unusual sounds into their performances. Bonecrusher the clown, for example, wanted to cut my hair with her giant scissors, while her friend provided an absolutely frightening evil laugh.
And then there is the mermaid.
I’m not going to give this one away, because the pirate/nautical area was easily our favorite part of the haunt. This section is something you really need to experience for yourself. You will spend quite a bit of time in this area, and that’s because it isn’t simply a straight path from one room to the next. It is not a traditional maze, but there are multiple doors that can lead you back toward where you started, while only one will get you out.
Here’s your hint: the correct way out is hard to find and even harder to open on your own.
The actors in this section are not interested in helping you leave. In fact, they seem much more interested in keeping you there. That interaction makes the area feel like an actual challenge rather than simply another sequence of rooms.
There were enough actors throughout the haunt to keep us constantly on our toes, and their dialogue was creative rather than repetitive. One character was difficult to describe: horns, a mask, a crazy headdress, and some genuinely great noises. Sometimes the strangest characters are the ones that stick with you the longest, and this was one of them.
