Summary

New Orleans may be the most famously spooky city in Louisiana, but Baton Rouge is no slouch in that department thanks to the exceptionally high-quality haunt it’s home to – The 13th Gate. This 40,000-square-foot haunt is home to movie-quality sets, costumes, makeup, masks, and scares. Floor to ceiling, no square foot is spared from lush detailing and a wide variety of scare tactics to keep you on your toes. Actors go far beyond your typical “boo” scares, and they manage to make actors disappear and reappear as if by magic. The intensity was high from start to finish, and… Read More…

While there’s signage aplenty guiding guests to the proper lines and catching your eye as you drive up, parking was a bit of a nightmare. Signage wasn’t overly clear, and the first lot directly by the haunt entrance is run by a third party and is cash only. While we appreciated the heads-up about parking on the site, it took us longer than we expected to find a parking spot we could easily access. It was also a bit unclear where to find their Carnevil area until we got to the signs in the gift shop letting us know it… Read More…

The outside of the 13th Gate is relatively unassuming – basically, it’s a big black box with loud music and lots of signs. Once we got inside, though, we were blown away. A large gate with intricate carvings beckoned us forward into twisty stone pathways, which led to the “maintenance” elevator bay. We really did feel like we were on an elevator for their intro scare, and that feeling continued throughout the haunt. Each theme was clearly realized with clever use of hallways and scares to keep the transitions from feeling too jarring. We also found that themes were executed… Read More…

Special Effects10

This haunt pulls off what I thought was impossible – an absolutely perfect blend of sound design, scenic design, props/animatronics, and sensory and lighting effects. Best of all, every scene was fully realized from floor to ceiling. For example, we were in a scene below the deck of their life-sized pirate ship, and looking up, we saw starry skies through holes to the “deck” above us. There’s not a single area left undetailed, and the detailing felt incredibly realistic. Animatronics fired on all cylinders and were timed to hit folks throughout the group, not just the first person to walk… Read More…

Characters9.88

The 13th Gate is positively packed with highly committed and exceptionally well-costumed actors. Just like the sets, the masks and costumes were high quality and highly detailed – every piece looked fully custom for the haunt. Masks fit perfectly, and makeup was applied not just on the faces of the actors, but all over their bodies. We loved how interactive the actors were, physically and verbally. Sure, there were a fair few folks who lunged and made a noise, but so many characters had dialogue to sell the story of their scenes or props to add to their menace. Nobody… Read More…

Scare Factor9.78

Pay heed to the intensity warnings on The 13th Gate website. This haunt delivered the most consistently intense scares we’ve ever experienced in a haunt, thanks to their layered approach to scares. Each room had no fewer than three elements designed to scare folks, ensuring that our whole group of 6 got directly hit with at least one scare in every room. We never got the same type of scare twice in a row, and animatronics were well hidden and hit at unpredictable times. In the cemetery, we were distracted by animatronic crows pecking at a body. That kept us… Read More…

Value8.46

While the minutes per dollar ratio isn’t the strongest we’ve experienced this haunt season at 0.69 (a roughly 29-minute walkthrough for $41.44 after fees and taxes), the sheer quality of the experience, quantity of scares, and a fun spot to hang out and take photos or watch shows make this haunt an easy 10/10 for value. Their Carnevil area is home to their “selfie museum,” plus several other paid activities, food options, picnic tables, and a stage for shows. There wasn’t one when we visited, but it’s nice that the option is there. The photo ops were high-quality and creative,… Read More…
