Thrill Park Prague makes excellent use of ambient sound from the moment you enter. Whilst in the waiting area and especially in the toilets, you’ll find your ears filled with subtle acoustics, like the persistent drip of what we can only assume was dank water. This is an excellent way to unsettle guests and subsume them in the horror atmosphere even before stepping over the threshold to the haunt proper. Inside, the soundscape is used sparingly, but effectively. Each area features its own distinct atmosphere, such as a passageway lined with hanging dollies emitting subtle, jingling music.
The scenic design is simple, relying on industrial construction, oil drums, metal gateways, and limited spaces rather than elaborate set dressing. This restrained approach complements the attraction and strengthens its oppressive atmosphere rather than detracting from it.
Individual scenes are diverse and thoughtfully built. An ordinary parlour subverts expectations as exits appear in unexpected places, assisted by an excellent system of doors that are unlocked only when actors decide it is time for you to move on. This creates the convincing impression that your route is at the mercy of the inhabitants, with the unsettling possibility of remaining trapped until they choose otherwise. Other environments include stark prison-like spaces and, at the ending, a claustrophobic white room splattered with gore, where many exits leave you questioning which one will provide your escape.
The haunt employs several effective practical effects to create startling moments without relying on actors. Concealed animatronics cause everyday objects to move, creating the convincing impression of unseen supernatural company. Without spoiling the shocks, many props appear to come to life…or come “dangerously” close to falling on unsuspecting visitors! Mechanical effects are also used. One pneumatic sequence shifts the environment beneath your feet, creating a disorientating feeling.
Lighting is one of the attraction’s greatest fortes. Much of the haunt is shrouded in dark, with faint red lighting guiding you towards the correct route while maintaining a constant sense of doubt. This restrained approach to illumination dramatically enhances the ambiance throughout. Projection mapping is used delightfully and to outstanding effect, altering ordinary paintings into incongruous, frightening versions of themselves in real time, the set melding where such paintings end and live actors begin.
The experience also incorporates a significant physical component. You should expect to crawl through extended sections of narrow passageways and use rigging to negotiate steep slopes, making stamina part of the attraction’s intention. As there are no crawl mats offered, wearing long trousers is sensible. Persons with a dislike of small spaces should also be aware that some crawling sections are both long and purposely confining.
