Summary

Our team returned to Desolate Acres Haunted Attraction for another season, and we were excited to see what changes and improvements had been made since our previous visit. We are happy to say that Desolate Acres, or DA for short, has taken some noticeable steps in the right direction! DA continues to embrace a more traditional, old-school haunted house experience, relying heavily on its cast, detailed scenes, and atmosphere rather than an abundance of high-tech special effects. One of the biggest improvements we noticed this year was the removal of the numerous dark empty hallways that we encountered during our… Read More…

Guest Experience8.37

Finding DA was relatively easy, especially for those familiar with the Waukesha County Expo Grounds. Parking was plentiful, and the ticket booth and entrance were easy to find. Throughout our visit, the staff members we encountered were friendly, welcoming, and professional. Everything appeared to be well-maintained and organized, and we had no complaints regarding customer service. We also did not notice any significant safety concerns while navigating the attraction. The official website provides the essential information guests need to plan their visit. Outside the haunt, guests will find portable restrooms, a ticket booth, and a few photo opportunities near the… Read More…

This was one of the areas where we noticed the most improvement compared to our previous visit! Last season, we pointed out the numerous dark hallways and empty transition spaces that separated many of the attraction’s main scenes. This year, DA has done an excellent job eliminating those areas and creating a much more continuous walkthrough. The changes made the haunt feel larger and helped maintain the atmosphere throughout the experience. Many of the rooms featured a good amount of detail, with scenery and decorations that fit their respective environments. The lighting was generally well done, allowing guests to appreciate… Read More…

Special Effects6.11

Here is one of the weaker areas of DA, as the attraction continues to rely primarily on its actors and traditional haunted house techniques rather than elaborate technology or large-scale effects. Throughout our walkthrough, we encountered an air blast and some shock-style effects that provided some unexpected surprises. Fog and lighting were also incorporated throughout the attraction, helping establish the atmosphere within the different scenes. The scenic design itself was detailed, with many rooms featuring decorations that fit their environments. However, there was very little in terms of animatronics or more elaborate mechanical effects. While we appreciate the haunted house… Read More…

The cast was easily the strongest aspect of DA, and they certainly deserve recognition for the energy and dedication they brought to the experience! Throughout our walkthrough, we encountered an impressive number of actors, with someone present in nearly every room and occasionally multiple characters working together. This helped maintain a consistent flow of interactions and prevented the attraction from feeling empty. One of the biggest standouts was the makeup, which was some of the better work we have seen throughout the season. While a handful of performers utilized masks, the majority featured detailed makeup that complemented their characters and… Read More…

Scare Factor6.98

DA delivered a solid variety of traditional haunted house scares, with several well-timed surprises that managed to catch our team off guard. Throughout the walkthrough, we encountered a handful of effective jump scares, including unexpected pop-outs and air blasts that added some unpredictability to the experience. One actress near the beginning of the attraction delivered a particularly memorable scare when she suddenly appeared and caught us by surprise. We also enjoyed the rat puppet interaction in the queue line, which provided an entertaining and unexpected moment before we even entered the main attraction. With actors present in nearly every room,… Read More…

Value6.97

With general admission priced at $20 during our visit, DA offers a relatively affordable ticket compared to many other haunted attractions in the area. Our walkthrough lasted approximately 12 minutes, giving the attraction a $0.60 minute-per-dollar (MPD) rating. While this is on the lower side in terms of overall duration, the quality of the scenes and performances helps make up for some of the shorter runtimes. Compared to our previous visit, when we recorded a 13-minute walkthrough at $25 per ticket, this year’s lower admission price provides a slightly better value despite the shorter experience. We also appreciated the improvements… Read More…
