Summary

Doc Wilkes House of Horrors is a true East Texas Classic. Nestled in Longview, TX, this haunt’s been running for 24 seasons, and their experience shines through. You can expect two highly theatrical haunts packed to the brim with inventive transitions and engaging actors, plus a gloriously punny magic show put on by THE Doc Wilkes himself. That’s not to mention the photo ops scattered throughout the grounds and the Fright Show Museum, which features static figures of all the classic horror villains. Yes, you can experience all of that for only $21.88! If you want to experience a haunt… Read More…

If the giant sign saying “I survived Doc Wilkes House of Horrors” didn’t make it clear where to find the haunt, there was plenty of other signage in all directions to help me locate the haunt. There’s no parking lot, but street parking was easy enough – I can see that filling up quickly on busier nights, however. The facility was incredibly well maintained and the staff was highly professional. I also appreciated how many staff members were working, and working together well. It made it easy to find someone to ask questions, and their hard work helped make the… Read More…

Doc Wilkes has some of the most inventive scene transitions I’ve ever seen in a haunt. I don’t want to spoil them, but rest assured that there are very few mere hallways that move you from scene to scene. Those inventive transitions also do an amazing job of controlling the crowd flow throughout the haunt. They also really made the overall themes and storylines clear and consistent in the haunts. I found that the facades did set a haunt mood, but more detailing could have really sold the haunts within. This is particularly true for Ringmaster Madness. Unfortunately, I did… Read More…

If you’re looking for blockbuster animatronics, this may not be the haunt for you. That being said, I feel that this haunt’s focus on actor performances and prop placement served them well. Props helped set the scenes and gave actors a lot to interact with, though I admit I did spot quite a few props that looked store bought rather than custom, like some of the animal skeletons. That’s not to say that all of the props had that vibe – their corpses in particular looked custom and mostly realistic. Scenic design was a bit of a mixed bag –… Read More…

Commitment, thy name is the Doc Wilkes scareactors. This haunt is highly theatrical, with each room playing out as its own scene. This approach lives or dies based on the scareactors, and these folks delivered! Almost every character felt entirely unique, from their costuming to their behavior. For example, there was a jovial chef flanked by a much more menacing masked figure that worked in tandem to create their scene. In another room, I faced off against two ghostly girls who forced me to play their three games before I could move forward. In Ringmaster Madness, the clowns were more… Read More…

Scares were high on frequency, but lower on intensity. That’s not to say that there weren’t intense scares! The theatrical nature of the haunt naturally lent itself to a lower intensity overall that made the intense scares like the spark room stand out. The room-by-room, actor-centric approach meant that timing was perfect for every scare. I did find that most of the scares were at the guest’s level, with lesser verticality than we’ve seen in other haunts. It makes sense given their scene approach, but a scare from above or at ankle level would have ramped up the unpredictability and… Read More…

I used to say there’s nothing better than a night out at a haunt. Now I know that there’s nothing better than a night out at a haunt that provides as much bang for your buck as Doc Wilkes House of Horrors does. The haunts were fun and unique, the ticket prices were very reasonable, there are some great photo ops, and there’s even an incredibly charming magic show twice a night to add extra fun. If you find yourself in Longview, TX during the season, Doc Wilkes House of Horrors is an experience you won’t want to miss. Read More…
