If Imminent Doom struggles in one area, it’s how it bookends the haunt experience. Well, I guess that technically includes two areas: the entryway and the exit. The large metal building is certainly imposing, but it does give off more of an industrial building vibe than that of a haunted house. The large metal building is certainly imposing, but it does give off more of an industrial building vibe than that of a haunted house. The Terrifier installations added a bit to the spooky nature, but a more representative facade of the Hacksaw house and hillbilly areas that you initially walk into would go a long way in building the immersion.
Exiting the haunt is a similar experience – you walk out of the haunt into what feels like a backstage area and right back into the parking lot. Not every haunt needs a midway, but extending the theming just a little further to help hide the real world would go a long way.
Once inside the haunt, though, I was highly immersed. Actors did a great job controlling the crowds, and the theme transitions were mostly clear – I didn’t quite understand the midway to alien connection, but they were tied together well aesthetically. They even had pathways and facades that helped distinguish the themes without breaking the immersion. I was fully transported to the 1970s, a macabre midway, and the hellish catacombs wrought by Skeledemon.
I especially appreciate that even though I was reviewing and taking pictures as I walked through, the monsters were hell-bent on protecting the overall crowd flow. I was pushed forward with scares and held in place by actors blocking my path the same way any other guest would have been, and that’s how it should be!
