The worlds of FEAR are packed with different effects and sensations, some of which are famously singular. In “X4” an incredibly violent lift conveys you down to another zone (and believe us you’ll be well shaken from this). There is clever construction here, leading to your exit from the lift seemingly being on another floor of the facility, even though you exit through the same doors as you entered. In “X4” an incredibly violent lift conveys you down to another zone (and believe us you’ll be well shaken from this). There is clever construction here, leading to your exit from the lift seemingly being on another floor of the facility, even though you exit through the same doors as you entered. Once within this facility, half body hanging animatronics spring at you from behind cages, and the deeper you go the more nesting clutches of eggs you uncover. Smoke hangs thick, and sound is layered and changing in every room, from announcements to towards the end more chanting compositions. Still in the realm of the Republic of England, “VITA NOVA” built a maze of isolation and mirrors (to capture your broad smiles of course). Air cannons shot forth as you traversed a bridge on your feet, and you may find yourself sliding towards freedom. Crawling, flashing lights, and announcements as to the stages and effects of VITA NOVA are all present here. Meanwhile, over in “The Core” an entire sewer system with a substantial water level means waders are required (and provided) as you clamber through the channels beneath. What seemed to be a new animatronic towards the finish of the maze provided a nice surprise, now a skeletal creature in neon vomiting similarly coloured water.
Over in Stidham Village, this year’s effects are a little different in “Malefica: Into Darkness”. Those at the front and back of the group are equipped with a torch and lantern respectively, that flicker and illuminate the details of the rooms and beings within, set to die when you least expect it. This is a very dark maze, with fabric hanging to create divisions. We did find that it was essential the group stayed together, otherwise the light would entirely leave you, so our very eager group-mates at the front rushing off did leave us in the pitch. At the end, there is a good scene not requiring the torch depicting the fire and brimstone of the original burning of the place. Sound design here can still be a touch repetitive with stock phrases from Mother Amelia, but the reimagining does provide some great new sensory experiences. Over in “Seeds of Evil”, an entire little village is contained within one maze, made sinister by the ever-present pumpkin props and decor, including one hanging from a swing. Air cannons, air pops, and strobes assault the senses, and the sounds of outside permeate the outdoor areas of the village, whilst growls and sounds of falling objects hit your ears the further you go within.
