Summary

Walking through the chill of a mid-October night, gravel crunching under my shoes, I pause to take in my surroundings. The clouds of the earlier hours are slowly fading, and the forming Hunter’s Moon glows softly among them. A graveyard scene, painted on the building before me, hangs ominously over the people milling about below. Music beats in the background to entertain the crowd – only to be harshly interrupted by the shrill roar of a chainsaw. My head swiftly turns, just in time to see the gaggle of kids racing by, with a cackling, blood-splattered maniac hot on their… Read More…

Finding Fright Manor wasn’t hard. To start with, it’s located at the Southport Little League. They also had some signs out front; it was almost too dark to see the smaller ones, but they did have a bigger one lit up. The haunt was very visible from the road as well. Parking was free, and they had a couple of parking attendants with bright orange wands to assist cars with finding spots. A huge banner bearing the haunt’s name pointed arriving customers in the right direction, and additional signage let everyone know they needed to enter the concession stand to… Read More…

Not long after arriving at Fright Manor, it was pretty obvious- as if the name wasn’t enough- that everyone was there for a haunted house. Between the music being played outside, the decor, and the odd actor sneaking out to play, the vibe was spooky and fun. Remember, this haunt sets up shop at a little league every season, so it would be impossible for them to hide or remove every single thing that might take guests β€œout” of the experience. However, I would have liked to see more props and such outside. Fright Manor was billed as having two… Read More…

Special Effects7.6

Because Fright Manor prides itself on being an β€œold school” haunted house, their main focus is scaring the snot out of every guest who walks through their door. However, they’ve included a decent number of props, animatronics, and special effects to enhance their show, so watch out – this haunt has some tricks up its sleeve! The majority of the props and animations I encountered were appropriate to each scene, and well-placed to catch groups unaware. I won’t spoil where it is, but one animatronic came down from above and got me good! (I would recommend repositioning it somewhere it… Read More…

A decent population of monsters haunted the Manor the night I came to visit, and while there were some quieter moments, I never had to wait *too* long before one of them was popping out from a curtain, slinking up behind me, or waiting in the room ahead for a Lone Wolf to show up! An incredibly creepy doll woman, referred to as the Hollow Matron, seemed convinced that I was β€œhers” and belonged in her family. She was incensed when I came home a little too late, snapping, β€œAnnabelle said you were supposed to be here three hours ago!”… Read More…

Scare Factor8

From what I said under Special Effects, you’re probably aware that Fright Manor uses multiple tactics to make groups scream, jump, and flee for their lives. But the driving force behind the frights is easily their cast. Other than some gaps here and there, the house had pretty good actor coverage. And be forewarned: they seemed to know the place like the back of their hands! What do I mean by this? That cast excelled at the β€œrebound scare”, meaning they’d get me when I walked into their rooms – only to swing around a little later and nail me… Read More…

Those darn kids got off easy. Not only did I have to contend with the previously mentioned chainsaws tearing at my heels at the end – dear doctor (a.k.a. Dr. Mortmain… yes, AGAIN) decided to run out and join them! Good thing luck was on my side, as I managed to escape Fright Manor in approximately 14 minutes. At a base ticket price of $25.00, that gives the haunt an MPD (Minutes Per Dollar) rating of 0.56. That’s quite a bit below the standard minute per dollar we like to see in a haunt, but I do feel my experience… Read More…
