With most of the other visitors to this place already sent off into the night, I soon find myself standing at the exit to the greenhouse- or garden- that precedes the path into the forest. Staring into the trees ahead evokes memories of the many stories Iβve heard over the years, both as a child and a woman: I can almost hear the howling of the Beast of Gevaudan. Or see Pinocchioβs eyes, alive with dark magic, staring back at me from a face twisted and gnarled from too many lies. The roars of dragons seem to echo from somewhere distant, guarding their land from intruders. A hint of gingerbread sweetness in my nose, followed by the burning stench of whatever poor victims the witch from Hansel and Gretel managed to stuff in her oven.
All of the above, and more, was waiting for me at Grim Trails, a haunted trail located within E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Kentucky. One of the most unique attractions in the area, this haunt is heavily based on popular fairy tales, legendary folklore, and some other common things that go bump in the night.
I had my work cut out for me with this review, and I was well aware of that. But hey – this was woods, and I was wolf. I totally had this, right?
(Spoiler alert: she did not, in fact, βhave thisβ.)
Now, without further ado: itβs time to crack open that storybook and write a new chapter for 2026.
NOTE: I experienced Grim Trails completely alone and did not enter with a group.
