Early into our adventure, a loud siren went off, spiking our heart rates and getting our adrenaline pumping before we even entered the actual building! While we explored the facility, we could hear beeps and boops from medical equipment, pre-recorded announcements and warnings, and the occasional scream from some poor victim off in the distance (not customers). Detail was packed into nearly every corner of the Institute, right down to the walls, which all had some sort of texture or amount of props stuck to them. Several animatronics were also used.
To touch more on props and animatronics, watch out: many animated figures are positioned for scares, and you wonβt always realize it until theyβre launching at you! We didnβt notice any props or animations that werenβt appropriate for a medical (and later on, back alley) setting. There were bodies on tables and seated in chairs; some static, some moving. One experiment was going positively APE within its cage, and another monster seemed to break through a wall, its big jaws gnashing at us. We witnessed a horrific experiment with a shackled victim seemingly being ripped apart (!), and we narrowly dodged the gigantic vehicle that sped toward us, blaring its horn! For props, there was a lot of medical equipment, some beds and gurneys, pill bottles, jars of wet specimens – just a lot of things youβd expect to see in a hospital-themed attraction.
Nor did they skimp on sensory effects. This was one area where they could have added a little bit more, but we noticed good scenic lighting (lots of cold blues that gave the feel of an environment that was once βsterileβ), strobes, a very disorienting room involving the color white that we wonβt spoil, a red βlaser swampβ effect, fog, vibrations, a floor that squished beneath our shoes, and more. Also, we canβt be sure of what that *awful* smell was wafting through several rooms, but it was nothing short of revolting: like poop and rotting flesh. Gross!
