Scoring Criteria Transition: 2026 sits right at a change in our review categories and weighting, so this score isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison to reviews from nearby years under different criteria; worth keeping in mind if you’re tracking a haunt’s rating over time.

Summary

We found ourselves traveling to Mattawan, Michigan, for the next chapter of Nightmare Realm. Nightmare Realm continues to develop such an enthralling story of the town of Cypress Hollow and creates an amazing experience for guests via various character developments, with the background of the town suffering the consequences of their actions toward one, Trista Bonacci. With all the thought and execution the team of Nightmare Realm has brought to the table season after season, one thing is always for sure during our visit… Cliffhangers are a son of a bitch.

Guest Experience9.5

GPS led us to the main entrance and the general parking lot. The attendants (in full makeup) guide the cars and mention buying tickets online to avoid a longer wait time. We were guided to the appropriate line to enter the midway. The staff walk around in branded Nightmare Realm jackets and check in with customers and other staff members. Their friendly service makes everything feel like a warm environment. Signs were visible for different options other than the main attraction. Well, the cat is out of the bag! Their new addition this year has garnered a lot of great… Read More…

Immersion9.17

The midway area is the first section you are brought to before getting to the main attraction entrance. Like a small town, they had a food truck vendor, main street vibes with the overhead string lights, a gift shop, and entertainment vendors. Our favorite part is the free home haunt walkthrough experience, which is a homage to the beginnings of where every pro haunt comes from. If that wasn’t enough, the actors walk around sniffing out fear from everyone passing by. The queue line actors at the entrance give a storyline to what is happening in the tiny town of… Read More…

Special Effects8.92

Nightmare Realm provides several special effects throughout the attraction. It combines a bit of old-school building techniques with some modern twists and great concepts. The walkthrough is the town of Cypress Hollow. Guests walk through the town and find various spots, including the school, town library, as well as homes, such as Grandma’s. Within Grandma’s house, there is a staircase that has a great effect. It is angled enough to feel as though you are walking downstairs to a basement area through a creative illusion. Inside the basement, it looks as though you are at a different level, thanks to… Read More…

Characters9.18

If there is one thing Nightmare Realm provides just a touch above all else, it is characters. I must say that there is an option for a behind-the-scenes ticket, and it provides a fascinating experience of not just the scenes and such things, but it does provide a glimpse into the townsfolk and all their different occupations and such. The actors really immerse themselves in their characters and roles to help tell the overall large story of the attraction. We took a quick read through one of the headline articles of the Cypress (clever newspaper name for the town) and… Read More…

Scare Factor8.94

Nightmare Realm has a ton going for it in terms of scares. The actors are very driven through dialogue, yet deliver it in such a frightening and entertaining fashion. Some of the characters are also just plain creepy. There is a room inside Grandma’s house with plenty of dolls, and the actor there moves in such an unusual fashion with an upside-down mask that gives a very uneasy performance. Even Grandma herself moves very fast for an elder. The actors target all different people in groups at various times, making the whole experience great for everyone. As we said before,… Read More…

Value8.86

We spent 32 minutes in the walkthrough. With the price of GA tickets at $27.50 plus fees, the MPD is set at 1.16. With this being a bit higher than the national average, it’s no wonder people stay behind and hang out in the midway area or even go in more than once! Additional tiers included are Front of the Line access at $42.50 plus fees, and VIP, which includes front-of-the-line access with a collectible lanyard, VIP shirt, and complimentary hot chocolate or cider. Along with the main attraction, axe throwing and disc throwing can be enjoyed for an additional… Read More…
