Summary

One of our favorite visits throughout the season is Realm of Terror (ROT), just north of Chicago in Round Lake Beach. ROT is a unique twist that mixes classic haunted house experiences with high-end props and a crazy cast behind it. ROT is in your face and tosses so much into every square inch available that it’s almost overwhelming. The attraction itself is something that needs to be experienced by any haunted house fan due to its high-energy actors and incredible ambiance. I guess what I’m trying to say is, I want to go back already.

Guest Experience9.6

Realm of Terror is located on Rollins Road in Round Lake Beach. All information pertaining to the attraction is available on their website as well as all social media platforms. The haunted house is within Kristof’s Entertainment Center and has plenty of free parking. It’s easy to navigate between the entertainment center and the haunted house. There are also plenty of event staff and security to guide you where you need to go. Once inside, there is a midway with games, a bar, shops, and monsters to interact with and get information from. The staff is very friendly and ready… Read More…

Immersion9.07

Passing up the family entertainment center, the entrance to ROT is visible, with a fire cannon shooting up at the most appropriate but inconvenient times that create efficient scares. We arrived right before their pre-opening tradition called the “Terror Rising,” which had all actors walk out and mingle freely in the midway with the customers. The music suddenly becomes intense, making the actors move in a hurry. The music stops and they shout in unison, which was very exciting to witness. The facade of the house looks unkept and creaky, like a traditional old-school haunted house with vintage Halloween decorations.… Read More…

Special Effects9.24

The effects at ROT are very hard-hitting. Upon entering, there is a giant flame that lights the sky. The Fog throughout is thick and creates an amazing facade for the haunt entrance. The facade is a classic haunted house with great lighting to present a spooky ambiance. Inside the attraction, there are several scenes throughout that just ooze what a haunted attraction should be. For a great portion of the attraction, scenes are super tight and require some creativity to walk through; meanwhile, actors are still able to pop out and scare in various spots. Throughout the attraction, there are… Read More…

Characters9.13

ROT is a unique place with an engaging atmosphere. The characters here are high energy and seem to have creative control over what they do. With plenty of actors throughout the midway and attraction, the team behind ROT produce great interactions to keep guests highly entertained. We arrived early enough to make it to the Terror Awakening portion. If guests arrive early (645p is best) they get to witness a thrilling moment where all the actors surge through the midway area and engage with everyone. It’s a great hyping up moment before proceeding through the attraction. We ran into PT… Read More…

Scare Factor9.04

From the time you enter the frightening midway, the scares start and do not stop until you leave. One of the coolest parts of the midway is a tall pole with a Realm of Terror sign and a torch that goes off intermittently, which makes anyone walk by jump. The actors roaming the midway are fun to interact with and add in scares every chance. Inside the house at every twist and turn there is someone to scare. With so many narrow spaces and pop outs, the actors can scare multiple times. Some of the scares are so sudden and… Read More…

Value7.98

Our walkthrough this year was 19 minutes, which is amazing considering how small the space is and how much entertainment is packed in there. On the night we went, the ticket price was $27.99, and on peak days the prices can go up to $33.99. Tickets are sold in time slots to reduce the wait as much as possible. If you are impatient, there are Express tickets for a reduced wait time at $42.99 and VIP for skipping the line at $57.99. While the dollar-per-minute ratio is below the average of 1 that we see most often, the entertainment while… Read More…
