Scoring Criteria Transition: 2026 sits right at a change in our review categories and weighting, so this score isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison to reviews from nearby years under different criteria; worth keeping in mind if you’re tracking a haunt’s rating over time.

Summary

Across the Irish Sea, there are whispers of something brewing in the billowing winds. The Nightmare Realm, the highly acclaimed haunt of Ireland-fame, has erupted like a gloriously great storm for the first time overseas, here in London just in time for Halloween. Relocated to the historic Avery Hill Mansion in Greenwich, this brand new event includes two haunts (“Avery Hill Asylum” and “Sundown Manor”) the intricately designed midway area of Halloween Town, and five secret experiences spread across the grounds. It’s terrifying, creative, and sure to scare Londoners in a way they’ve never felt before.

Guest Experience9.8

The Nightmare Realm scores incredibly high with guest experience – their website lists as much info as you could possibly want in preparation for your visit to the haunt without giving too many secrets away. We also found the attraction very easy to find and they also offer free parking, which in London is a huge bonus! We did, however, think there could have been a bit more lighting between the car park and the attraction, especially for pedestrians having to navigate back and forth on the same narrow road as two lanes of cars. For such a small site… Read More…

Immersion8.12

The two mazes have very different feelings in terms of their exteriors. “Sundown Manor” has a facade that looks like a worn down old house, with plenty of boarded up windows, set in actuality on the side of a grand neoclassical building with a huge portico, under which sat a skull chair in which you can have your photo taken. “Avery Hill Asylum” does not have any active theming on its frontage, but the building is clearly an old and real institutional edifice, and so the lighting provided was enough to lend the space an air of ensuing dread. Separate… Read More…

Special Effects7.52

While we don’t want to spoil the secret rooms we experienced at the attraction, we can’t talk about special effects without mentioning these vignettes. Each and every one of them had incredible use of special effects, with some really complex pneumatics in most of them. The Funeral Parlour Experience recreated the feeling of being shut in a coffin and experiencing moments after death including your very own funeral service and the drop of your coffin into the earth. An eerie soundscape takes you through this crazy journey, along with some impressive pneumatics that left us a little dizzy after making… Read More…

Characters8.3

Plunging into The Nightmare Realm, characters and creatures are everywhere, and not just in the mazes. Throughout the grounds of Avery Hill, strange and wondrous beings wander, with a silently stilted clown in porcelain mask, fortune tellers with flowing black gowns and apparently sigil tattooed faces, and an undertaker deeply hooded (to name only a fraction), its brimming with talent and some of the finest roaming actors we’ve seen this season. Once within the mazes, less cordial evils walk abroad. The vampires of “Sundown Manor” are a well-realised collection of horrors, with grimy, lived-in, yet also brokenly elegant costumes appropriate… Read More…

Scare Factor8.38

Scares came in many forms at The Nightmare Realm. “Sundown Manor” made good use of sudden movement and hidden positioning, with vampires appearing behind us and pursuing relentlessly through several rooms. There was something of a pursuit about it, making it difficult to feel at ease once an encounter had ended. The real highpoint was the spectacular ending: a dining room in which tables had been laid for a banquet, with bodies arrayed on them in an intricate setting. It was beautiful, twinkling lights and all, but also horrifying, the scares from beneath and near the tables made what might… Read More…

Value7.52

At roughly £38 a ticket, two mazes running at approximately 21 minutes at length seems at the surface like a bit of a steep price point. However, there is SO much more on offer at this attraction. We estimate that the five additional secret rooms add another twenty minutes of immersive frights, which we’d consider part of the primary scare experience. That’s over forty minutes of scares, plus all the time it takes to explore the intricate sets around Halloween Town plus the personal and unique interactions you have with all of the characters constantly roaming around. For a London-based… Read More…
