We were fortunate enough to attend each of the three mazes as our group of two since we were some of the last guests of the night, although we did catch up to a bigger group near the end of “The Nightmare”. This already guaranteed our experience to be much scarier than when attending with a group, but we do remember last year that the group sizes are still relatively small at this event. Nevertheless, the fact that we were only a couple really seemed to bring out all the evil that was possible in these mazes, and the actors came at us with such force with scarcely a moment to breathe!
“Cell Block T” provided a variety of different scares, with each of us split up and interrogated separately by the inmates of the establishment. After being stripped of everything in our pockets, one of us was handcuffed to a prison cell and nearly fed dog food by a long tongued monkey, while another of us was intimidated for minutes by another set of prisoners who forced us to acknowledge their superiority. There was a great amount of looming intimidation in this maze, and even though the actors were not touching us there were somehow still physical, blocking our way, getting close to us, breathing in our faces, and forcing us to do various actions such as star jumps or squats. But in addition to getting yelled at, manipulated, run at, and interrogated, there were also other methods of scaring us used by the nuns in this maze, with some whispering in our ears and staring us down as we crossed a bridge in mid-air. This constant juggling of our actions and emotions kept us on our toes throughout the entire maze, only to bring it to a shuddering finale as a guy with a chainsaw ran at us followed by a very creepy figure scuttling at us quickly across the floor.
“Cursed Clowns” had a very different brand of scares in store for us, but still just as interactive and intense. One of our party was asked to sit in a rocking chair and forced to hold a baby and sing it a lullaby, while the other member of our party was split off through the closet and kidnapped by a clown with a gaping open face. We were both asked numerous times to play a variety of games, which kept us on our toes with worsening unease. We were constantly targeted by a variety of these crazed clowns, sometimes with attempts at cutting our throats, others who followed us for ages through endless doors. Many times we were shown a way out only for it to become a dead end, with the actors laughing away and getting more and more violent as time went on. All of these actors in this maze tread a perfect line between playfulness and terror, and we loved every minute of it.
“The Nightmare” was a completely different experience than the two more indoor mazes we began the night with. This maze actually contains a series of smaller, different vignettes and mazes, and actually does really feel like you are in a series of terrible dreams, thinking you’re escaping one only to somehow lose yourself in another. In the Land of the Dead a woman attempted to peel our faces off while a weird Krampus-like creature who we thought was a mannequin came to life with a viciousness we were not expecting. We particularly enjoyed Nightmare Alley, a rather long maze of wooden pallets near the end of the experience where we were constantly stalked by terrifying figures such as a screaming Samara and the most iconic character of the night – a scarily-tall Slenderman with claws for fingers who somehow appeared at every turn!
