What was in previous years- the entrance- is now a one-way exit, so if you ever searched the directions before this haunt season, look again. Once we got up the secluded lane to the building, staff were at the edge of the parking area, taking donations and directing vehicles into the parking lot. Parking gave us the first full-on view of just how towering and intimidating the Waverly Sanatorium really is. One of our group members had witnessed to what length the ticket line can grow, so she opted to buy her ticket online, while the rest of us purchased ours at the base of the hill at the entrance.
After a short trek up the hillside, we were at the entrance of the sanatorium. There was a food truck with a few drink and food options for anyone needing a quick snack and porta potties throughout the public area for guests to use. After the queue lines, we were directed to the stadium seats for a short story projection show.
The story does not, however, prepare one for the clowns! The 3D clowns were a sight to see for sure. The artistry and hand-painted designs are almost hypnotizing to look at; we were all in awe the entire trip. Leaving the 3D area, we were immediately reminded of where we were: the dark, damp halls of Waverly Hills, and just when we thought we were out of danger, we were surprised with one final undetected scare at the end.
When our blood pressure went back down, we went in to visit the gift shop and extracurricular activities available. On the night of our visit, the coffin rides were in full swing, but we never saw the zombie brain toss, possibly due to short staffing. The manager also explained, before we left, that there will be new escape rooms opening after haunt season, expanding the entertainment options at Waverly.
