Xtreme Scream Park is making a name for itself in the world of UK haunts by importing US-style animatronics and set-pieces that punch far above most of the competition. We were acutely aware that the styling of the park was much more American than is usual here, and for Halloween that’s just perfect.
Each haunt made brilliant efforts to enmesh you within its horrors. “Spores” has you stepping onto a pneumatically powered bus for your tour, only to be abandoned in the infected town itself. Moving walkways judder beneath you, whilst the “sporized” victims fall towards you in all their animatronic glory. Strange insect sounds chitter in the first few rooms, with water features splashing down in more industrial zones. Even the wall textures themselves evoke the infection, with massive spiral barrels accompanying them in outside areas. This is very expansive, and very immersive theatre, complete with gory finale act of an operation going horribly wrong during a spore transformation, splattering us with bodily fluids.
Switching environments, “The Witches of Hard Luck Wood” leans into its name, with endless forests to trundle through, only to be shocked by a spinning tunnel with a vibrating floor. This transitions you from the wooded section to a neon-glowing area, with painted sigils upon every surface, finally spitting you out into a massive finale with giant doll set pieces and animatronics leering down at you in a truly insane manner, for these were the children of the village now turned porcelain. Other effects included a swamp with birth canals and lasers, rickety bridges, a wind room, and constantly changing textures – grass, padding, squishy – underfoot. And we must mention the line of “hazard suits” that reached out for us with gloved hands, powered by puppetry.
Plenty of other effects were used throughout the park. “The Pie Factory” properly disgusted us with its human flesh preparation rooms, which included baskets of shaved hair (truly stomach turning); whilst the prison/institute of “Ash Hell Penitentiary” transitioned us first through a prison with metal music and a low ceiling area with shifting shafts of light, ground vibrating as if electricity was coursing through it, to an indoor-outdoor room fronting the Institute, complete with gushing fountain and people hanging from the ceiling. And how could we not mention the padded slanted cells, with a giant man-prop almost taking up an entire room chained to the ceiling.
Other highlights for us included a room of hooded children in a shrouded “The Village” school, plenty of animatronics including dogs, and blasts of air so strong they literally blew the hoarding off the haunt! And if you’re lucky you might just get to witness a vampire birth in “Blutlust”, with much puppetry and bursting action.
“Circus vs. Circursed” has not lost its charm with popcorn smells wafting through its storage shelves of carnival props, and lots of jumping animatronics from between the otherwise still clown cars and big top paraphernalia. A proper flap maze provides huge disorientation, followed by a mirror maze where you are sure to get lost.
