Summary

The Akron Haunted Schoolhouse and Laboratory proved that even on one of the busiest nights of the season, these longtime favorites still know how to deliver. Sweetest Day brought packed crowds, but the monsters never let up, serving a steady stream of well-timed scares, bizarre characters, and moments that left us laughing almost as hard as we were screaming. The Schoolhouse’s authentic old-building atmosphere pairs beautifully with the Laboratory’s twisted experiments, while impressive set details, clever special effects, and a few surprises we absolutely refuse to spoil make both attractions worth exploring. The cast was a particular highlight this year,… Read More…

Guest Experience9.63

We are cruel, so we showed up to review the Akron Schoolhouse and Laboratory on one of their busiest nights, Sweetest Day. What we learned was that no matter the size of the crowd or the clutching hand of your sweetheart, the monsters at the Schoolhouse and Laboratory are going to bring it hard and scare you. The haunt has a website that goes over the ticketing procedures as well as the haunt’s rules and warnings. The parking lot is huge, well lit, and heavily staffed. They have a modern ticketing system that rewards buying online, and two houses to… Read More…

Immersion9.41

The Akron Haunted Schoolhouse is intensely authentic because it is, indeed, an old, haunted schoolhouse, and the Laboratory was once the site of gruesome testing when it was a Laboratory. The moment you step in the buildings do half the work, and the staff here does the other half to offer an intense and non-stop experience that blends old school haunted house aesthetics with modern haunted house technology and acting. The sounds, sights, and the smells are all real to the scenes and bring you into another place, usually a very dangerous one full of monsters.

Special Effects9.1

The set design in the Schoolhouse is criminally good. The new additions this year to the entrance of the famous Dracula’s Castle were absolutely stunning, creating a Gothic stone cathedral that has been desecrated, glowing with evil. This is a house with a number of special effects and tricks that are unique to it and cannot be referenced without being spoiled. You are never sure when the ground under your feet is stable or not by the time you’ve entered their nightmare, and there is a shocking one-of-a-kind sight in the Lab after you traverse a terrifying long drop. We… Read More…

Characters9.32

To give you an idea of how excited we were with the cast this year, we had to cut our mentions down. First off, Karl the Kustodian has now become the Maintenance Misfits with the addition of Janitor Jen! Whether we should congratulate her on this new position is debatable, as we’ve seen the second-floor bathroom and its foul-mouthed resident. The Professor had already gathered a full paddle of victims by the time we arrived, and Larry the Parkour Zombie was terrorizing the Midway along with some very well-timed scares delivered through clicks. Within the Schoolhouse, there was a Porcelain… Read More…

Scare Factor9.14

As we mentioned at the start, we are bad people. We find joy in the screams of terror in haunted houses. A lot of it. Thanks to the groups in front of us and behind us, we were having the time of our lives. The monsters have perfected their sets and characters to deliver what was a consistent and excellent variety of scares. As we were entering Dracula’s Castle, a Bride managed to distract a guest, only for a male vampire to slip behind and scare that guest into dashing away. The insect actor that we called out in Laboratory… Read More…

Value9.2

This haunt has been enjoyed for generations, and the team here plans on making sure that tradition continues. This is a lot of scares for not a lot of money, and the fast pass is very strongly recommended, as we saw the General Admission line for the lab reach the Midway, but the Fast Pass Lane had no waiting. There are activities on site, including axe throwing and a themed bar in the Midway, along with a merch shop and food truck. Tickets can cost from $32-52, higher for season passes if you would like to come to any of… Read More…
