Summary

Dr. Grimley’s Haunted Trail brings you back to the basics of an independent haunt- to the scares! We were thoroughly surprised, and impressed, at the acrobatics of the scare actors to make sure we were scared from literally every angle while we walked the three haunted trails. This isn’t going to be a haunt with super elaborate sets, animatronics, or lots of Special FX. Instead, they pride themselves on bringing the scares, rather than using an elaborate budget- and they will certainly make sure you get some screams while you’re there! Dr. Grimley’s Haunted Trail started about six years ago… Read More…

Guest Experience8.98

Dr. Grimley’s Haunted Trail offers a Lights Out event every night they’re operating, usually later in the evening. This event turns off whatever lighting is in the mazes, so you can experience the haunt in a truly different setting. The ghouls go a little harder, the mazes get more difficult to find your way out, and the scares just keep coming! If you prefer to experience the trails in the normal way, the earlier in the evening, the better. There is not much regarding a midway, as the haunt is located on a nursery farm, but there are some Special… Read More…

Immersion7.58

While the immersion is on the more minimal side, with the mazes being made of mostly pallet walls or compost bins, it did not take away from the most important thing: the scares. We would of course love to see more props, animatronics, set builds, and theming along the pallet walls and compost bins- covering the walls and making the guest really feel as though they are walking through the decomposing fields of corpses, but we understand that is not in everyone’s budget. Dr. Grimley’s provided just enough props and scenery to make you feel as though you were roaming… Read More…

Special Effects6.83

There are a few Special FX lights and strobes throughout the mazes and in the midway area, along with some sounds in the mazes. A recommendation would be to increase the eerie and creepy sound effects, and limit the use of music in the mazes. The music is great in the midway, but takes away from the effect of immersion in the mazes, because we just wanted to dance! There is a decent amount of props used in each of the mazes so that you can envision the theme play out as you are venturing through- although you won’t always… Read More…

Characters7.71

One of the things that surprised us most about the characters at Dr. Grimley’s Haunted Trail was how much they accomplished without having a massive cast. A lot of haunts rely on sheer numbers, but here every actor made their scenes count. Whether it was the unsettling presence of Mother Rott in The Rot Fields, the followers lurking within The Dark Communion, or the twisted story surrounding Corbin in The Carvehouse, the characters felt like they existed for more than just a quick scare. They each had a place within the larger world of the haunt. A big reason for… Read More…

Scare Factor7.78

The scares at Dr. Grimley’s Haunted Trail were solid across all three trails, especially thanks to the maze-style layouts. The frequent use of tight corridors kept guests boxed in and continually guessing what was around the next corner of the labyrinth. The trails did a great job of creating tension through their design, making even simple actor placements feel more effective. That said, one thing that slightly hurt the scares was the reuse of actors between The Rot Fields and The Dark Communion. Part of the cast appeared in The Rot Fields before transitioning over to The Dark Communion, which… Read More…

Value7.67

At a range of $30 to $75 per ticket, Dr. Grimley’s feels like a solid value. You’re not paying for a single walkthrough and calling it a night. Instead, you’re getting access to three different attractions, each with its own atmosphere, characters, and scares- and a new scavenger hunt to continue the story of your Companion! What makes the price easier to justify is the amount of content packed into the experience. Between the winding trails, interactive characters, and the story connecting everything together, it feels like a full evening of entertainment rather than a quick stop on your Halloween… Read More…
