Apocalypse Z surrounded us with flickering, pulsing lights, heavily grunged walls, and realistic, bass-heavy audio. Several animatronics were positioned effectively, delivering sudden scares rather than serving as background decor. We especially appreciated one towering room where an actor stood high above us, using the scene’s vertical space to create an imposing overhead surprise!
Bloodmare Manor made excellent use of vertical space, with some rooms stretching high overhead, especially the grand area featuring the chandelier, before closing back in around us to keep us uncomfortable. Suspenseful music, crawling cockroaches, and layers of distracting details filled the manor, including a bouquet of flowers that unexpectedly began moving!
Psycho Circus erupted into UV-reactive 3D chaos: as soon as we put on the 3D glasses, the effects started jumping out at us! A squishy floor threw off our balance, and a wild variety of clown props and animatronics surrounded us throughout. The painted bubbles on the wall were super effective.
GRIM may have been dark, but its sound design and physical effects were extremely effective. Indescribable noises and bursts of heavy bass made it feel like things were moving all around us, even when we didn’t think they were! Some sounds made the hair on the backs of our necks stand up, while tight passages and textured walls ensured the darkness never felt empty. This haunt also played dirty. We had to feel along the walls to find our way through, but be forewarned: sometimes they, uh… bite back.
The Abandoned had a heavily decorated, rustic atmosphere filled with distressed details, sinister scarecrows, and a fully decked-out pumpkin area. A sudden ceiling-collapse effect made it feel as though the dilapidated farmhouse might come crashing down around us!
One thing we must applaud is how well Fright Kingdom maintained its massive collection of props and animatronics. Everything appeared to be working properly, and we didn’t notice missing fingers, teeth, or other obvious damage commonly seen on heavily used haunt props. Considering just how many they had, keeping them in such great condition was an impressive feat!
