Summary

Open rain or shine, Houston Terror Dome provides fun for the whole family. They’ve packed their grounds with fun and spooky curiosities to explore – they’ve got a pumpkin patch, selfie saloon, carnival games of skill and chance, escape rooms, and of course, the haunt itself, which cost $34.99 on the night I attended. Parking is an additional $5, but you can roam through all other parts of the grounds without paying for haunt admission if you’re not interested in the full fear experience. Their abominations prowl throughout the grounds, frightening guests to the beat of Houston Terror Dome’s live… Read More…

Guest Experience7.53

The homepage of their site did a good job answering most questions I had about the haunt; however, I did have a couple of points of confusion as I navigated through the rest of their site. I wasn’t sure what the difference was between “Total Chaos” and the other nights listed on the schedule, other than the fact that Total Chaos was more expensive. The homepage also mentions one haunted house, but the button linking to info about the haunt says, “haunted houses.” When clicked, it takes users to a page where they mention haunted houses again, but it then… Read More…

Immersion8.68

The grounds themselves lay solid groundwork (pun intended) for immersion, slowly escalating the fear factor as you drew closer to the haunt. Throughout our entire visit, I felt the Halloween spirit, and the pumpkin patch and skeleton petting zoo were a huge part of that. The exterior-most facade wasn’t as detailed as what awaited us once we entered the haunt, but it had some fun details that got us excited to see what was ahead of us. Once in the first chamber, we were treated to an intro video that explained the story of the haunt and did a good… Read More…

Special Effects8.5

Big, brash, and loud are the three words I’d use to define the special effects within this haunt. I was highly impressed with the scope and quality of the animatronics – it’s rare to see the full-body lip-syncing they incorporated in their guardian animatronic at the entrance outside of major theme parks, and they deserve their flowers for that! In general, you could see the care they put into selecting the animatronics throughout, and I did feel like they were high quality. Their “Elevator” was a fun little mechanism that helped with splitting up groups once within the haunt and… Read More…

Characters8.43

For better or for worse, the intro video showed off nearly every character within, and they almost all felt unique. The final stretch suffered from “generic chainsaw guy in mask syndrome” a bit, but I did respect the enthusiasm with which we were chased by those folks. As we walked through the haunt, actor coverage was strong both in terms of quantity and quality. You could really see the personality of each character shine through, especially as they prowled the queue line. As annoyed as I was about waiting for the opening “show,” the actors made it a fun experience… Read More…

Scare Factor7.1

While the intro video did a great job of explaining the story and the characters, it also spoiled nearly every scare in the haunt, especially the big animatronics. I want to give credit to the actors for bringing the intensity to their scares, but unfortunately it was almost impossible to be fooled by folks pretending to be animatronics because we’d seen them moving around in that intro video. Speaking of animatronics, I have two main gripes. First was timing. This biggest example of this was a great flying animatronic that I wish triggered more precisely when the group entered the… Read More…

Value5.22

The haunt is high quality and was SO fun to walk through, but the length left me wishing for more at its current price point of $34.99 for the haunt walkthrough, plus another $5 for parking. I think a lot of that came down to the intro video. 3 and a half minutes of haunt time was spent on the intro video (out of 11.5). I included that time in our minutes per dollar calculation (MPD) because there were scare actors in the room with us lurking and lunging where appropriate as it played, but it did make the haunt… Read More…
