Right off the bat, we were reminded never to trust the clowns – or the patients, for that matter – as one misdirected us in the very first room. Hah! The cast utilized a variety of approaches throughout the trail. Some stared silently, stalked us, or pounded on the walls and objects around them, while others lunged from their hiding places, then followed up with laughter, screams, or complete silence.
Several characters were highly interactive, including Nurse Dorene, the Milk Man with the mullet, the clowns, and the woman who proudly introduced us to her rodent pets. Another nurse asked, “You know what they say when you go crazy?” before answering, “You lose your head!” Well, that seemed promising! The pastor inside the church engaged us with dialogue, while a patient twitching across the floor nearby delivered an eerily believable performance.
Some actors primarily relied on jumping out and screaming. Adding more varied scare tactics or scene-specific dialogue would help give those characters stronger identities. We also encountered a few longer stretches without anyone lurking, so adding more characters/coverage in those areas could keep the pressure on between the more populated scenes.
The cast showcased a wide variety of costumes, masks, and makeup, although the quality and level of detail varied. Each look generally matched its scene, but some clean skin and clothing could have used more distressing to look more lived-in.
Several makeup designs (and masks) were exceptionally well done, including the Milk Man, the nurses, the clown with the horn, and a cemetery character wearing an impressive facial prosthetic. One of the best overall looks was the woman in the peach dress, who kept catching us off guard throughout the trail.
We also encountered an unsettling mushroom-like mask, a fitting pig mask, and a hairless cat we definitely didn’t expect to charge toward us! The clowns were colorful and distinct, utilizing different combinations of masks and makeup. One character in that area even had some rather saggy… accessories. Let’s just say they were really letting it all hang out!
