Scoring Criteria Transition: 2026 sits right at a change in our review categories and weighting, so this score isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison to reviews from nearby years under different criteria; worth keeping in mind if you’re tracking a haunt’s rating over time.

Summary

Pueblo, Colorado is known for many things: the steel mill, the riverwalk, B Street, incredible green chile, and more. Haunts might just have to be added to that list. After visiting Phobia, currently out by Pueblo County High School, is about 15 minutes east of town, Pueblo has secured its place on the haunt scene list. Phobia might not have the biggest footprint of haunts in Southern Colorado, but they do a lot of great work in the community through the J5 Foundation, which gets $1 from every ticket sold. So, Pueblo, go get scared and support a good cause… Read More…

Phobia is a little outside of town, just east on Highway 50, but your map app will take you right to it! Parking seemed pretty plentiful in the area, though you might have a short walk if you go during a busy time. Finding information about the haunt is generally okay, but they would definitely benefit by publishing the hours more because they are open late, and getting that word out might inspire more night owl haunt fans to visit. Likewise, a bit more decor and mood lighting out in front of the haunt might help draw more eyes and… Read More…

Immersion7.25

The current ticket table and haunt entrance are under a large inflatable clown archway that provides a nice entree to what awaits beyond the curtain. While the haunt starts subtly enough, once the actors make an appearance, the event really gets underway! Before long, hauntgoers find themselves in the blackout maze, with just enough light to reveal what hides inside and help the wayward souls get back on track. Although an inflatable maze may not sound too intimidating, it did a great job of keeping the sense of immersion high, as we were slightly hunched, frequently finding dead ends requiring… Read More…

Special Effects7.01

The haunt path is pretty simple and natural, which works well in the prairie and gives a sense of a once abandoned outpost that has been occupied by the creatures of our nightmares. The way the back of the haunt just sort of disappears into the darkness also gives the impression that there might be more monsters waiting in the shadows. And that is later shown to be the case when, squinting into the dark, you’re able to discern a white clown face back by a broken-down car in the distance, that then rushes toward you as quickly as a… Read More…

Characters7.83

The cast at Phobia does a great job keeping the fun and intensity high, while also making the space feel full. Everyone we encountered was dedicated to their roles, with some really giving it 110%, like the hooded figure with the scythe intent on murder and the actor playing leatherface who fully embraced the chainsaw tango. The costumes were appropriate and adequate, though a little more attention to detail, such as some eyeblack under masks, would help kick the experience up a notch. Nevertheless, the cast really did a great job of providing some good scares and a great time!

Scare Factor7.7

Part of what makes the cast’s performance so engaging is their dedication. As the haunt goes on, the creeps and creatures grow more and more wild before ultimately handing guests over to the silver screen slayers. Those actors, though, continued to work their scenes until the very last moment, maximizing the amount of fright. While some bayed at us from a distance, creating more trepidation with each step as we approached, others struck from around tight corners and dark spaces, and in silence until they wanted to make themselves known (still looking at you, black body suit guy). Phobia hits… Read More…

Value7.46

The total walkthrough time of Phobia was just under 10 minutes. However, it felt like a much longer experience than that. Of course, some people might make it through faster or slower, depending on how long it takes each guest to make it through the blackout maze. At $15 per person, $1 of which goes to the J5 Foundation, that does, however, put its minutes per dollar ratio at a measly .65 minutes for each dollar. Nevertheless, Phobia is a great time and well worth the trip to the county this haunt season!
