Just outside the main entrance, the external areas set the tone for the evening, with a fortress-like frontage, flickering torches, and heads mounted on pikes to welcome you into this lurid nightmare. This haunt is built around a series of separate vignettes and zones, rather than one overarching storyline, which has you exploring incredibly diverse environments, from the twisted cosmetic surgery hospital of St. Sinisters to deep mines requiring gas-masked workers, and an insane clown zone. Adding something a bit different this year are two new areas of “Project 13”, with movie-themed homages to franchises like Saw and Nightmare on Elm Street, and “Kirkleatham Playthings” a dark blindfold maze where you are the toys. This method means there is continuously something different lurking about the next turn.
This linear format means you move through each zone, but doesn’t mean the experience is uninterrupted, because very occasionally we catch up with the group ahead of us meaning actors had to prevent us from going too quickly. This is because Scream Factory is so very popular but can remove you from the immersive environment for short spells. Yet, the sheer diversity of surroundings and the difference between inside and outside areas make Scream Factory a fun and long trail, with much to discover amongst its different scenes.
